I'm pretty sure $99 is the normal price.

    • -1

Usual price at the moment is about $129/$130. See, for example, http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Hom…

      • Usual price at the moment is about $129/$130

Can confirm it only went up yesterday, so zero credibility with saying that.

    • +3

it was $99 a few days ago at Officeworks, went back up to $129 yesterday I think

      • +2

I'm 99% sure I checked Officeworks online yesterday morning before I went out shopping and it was still $99 … dodgy bastards.

Wish WD would do another cashback offer on these - bought two last time, and would like another one or two to give as presents. $99 ain't a bargain after getting it for $50 :(

        • +8

It's actually a good thing that OW increased their price because now you can price beat with TGG to get it 5% cheaper.

        • +4

I was going to get it this weekend at $99 so saved myself nearly $5 ;)

        • +2

Yeah, good point :) Lets see how long it takes for them to drop it again.

    • Can always walk into stores that allow haggling and get these units for $99 or less. Pretty sure they have been $89 on WD's website before.

Great device, the only issue being audio/video codecs are constantly evolving and sooner or later WD stop supporting their current unit so they can sell you on a newer unit. Not sure what the custom firmware scene is up to, maybe this is no longer a problem?

      • Still supporting them no problems. There was a new firmware update just last week! More chance of WD continuing supported updates then most other brands out there!

      • +1

sooner or later WD stop supporting their current unit

Curious as to what it's like living in a house with no technology?

Afterall, sooner or later support will be dropped - and thus the mentality you have of not buying for this reason.. results in you having none :)

        • Audio and Video codecs change and evolve at a much faster pace then other "technology".

The point I was making is that my HTPC server could take 7-10 years before the hardware may need upgrading, but the media software I use is free and will always be up to date. The software in WD media players goes out of date when WD launch a new player.

For the record I have owned 2 of these WD media players, the first never supported compression on file headers, and the second unit "WD Live" the model previous to the player listed in the deal is now running into "unsupported" audio errors. The last firmware update for my WD Live was almost 12 months ago.

    • $99 at jb hifi cannington at the moment

      • Was in there today and they where $135 :)

        • which store?

    • For every one saying this is not a special, it is! Albeit a very common special nowadays! (A bit like a 2L Coke for $2). There's a few places that regularly charge more for this, (ie. HN usually have it for $119 in store, and listed on their site at $148), but it's quite easy to get stores like JB down to $99 even when not advertised on special!!!

  • should i get this or the popcorn hour listed on another post?

    mainly for streaming vids

    • +3

I'd go the WDTV Live Streaming - the Popcorn seems a bit of overkill if all you want to do is stream videos from another computer or portable hard drive.

I use my WDTV for streaming all the TV shows / movies I've "sourced" online - have them saved on my laptop & server computer, and I just access them using a network share. Easy to set up and use.

      • Yep, I'll second that. I use PS3 Media Server on my Mac, and it will happily stream 1080p MKV files (via wireless at that) all night long.

        • An other option is the Roku with a plex server running. Unfortunately the Roku plex app looks terrible.
The WD does do the important apps like Hulu and Netflix.
          It's a good option!

  • Hasn't this always been $99 at Officeworks. Where's the bargain here?

    • +3

It is not infrequently $99 at officeworks - but its quite commonly $129 at officeworks (as it is at the moment)

  • It was $99 a year ago and $50 cash back.

    • yeah, we know as said above. The cashback isnt running anymore so $99 is the best deal atm.

  • I got JB to price match to $99.

  • Excellent device, been using them for years. Any new versions on the horizon?

    • -2

Why do you want a new version?

  • XBMC able or not ?

    • Unfortunately, not.

  • This is the normal price. I havent seen it higher then $100

  • Hell yeah, I went down to Officeworks yesterday to pick up a companion for the WDTV I have at home already. They had put the price back up to $129 so I bought some Banksy canvasses and went home. Looks like another trip to Officeworks in the morning. Thanks OP!

  • does this one support the subtitle?

    • +2

Yes it does depending on how they're made available. If you've got .mkv files, the subtitles are usually contained within the file so switching subtitles, enabling/disabling subtitles, changing audio tracks is pretty straightforward. If you're using other media such as AVI files, make sure the subtitle files have the same name as the corresponding AVI files.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Rusty

      • awesome! time to replace my old media player

  • Now I know what to do with my two $40 vouchers I got from the game sale saga.

  • Picked one up the other day from OW for $99. Not bad interface and menu. Played all video files types that I had with no problem. Did have a problem with AAC multichannel audio only playing 2.0. No problem with AC3 5.1.

  • Are there any good stream boxes with audio out? My Tv doesn't have a headphone jack and the speakers are horrid.

  • Was just looking at this at JB Frankston for $130. Decided to check OzB before I bought!

  • This has been sold at officeworks before for $88. I know because I bought one at jb for about $20 more and a couple of days later the deal was posted on here and I was kicking myself.

Since using the device the main issue for me had been is sluggishness in reading my 2t hp drive. The UI is pretty good and it plays just about anything you throw at it. I think they really need to upgrade the usb to 3.0 this could/should help some performance issues.

    • Or maybe it was $99,can't exactly recall.

Can someone let me know if there is any specific reason people want to purchase this one over WD TV Play?
WD TV Play is cheaper, newer and faster, however it is not available in Australia. (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=920)

I purchased one through Amazon and it only cost me 60$, the only missing feature is the second USB port it seems, here is an in-depth review link of the two:

however it is not available in Australia.

      You answered your own question

      • +1

That… And a few of us actually only paid $49ish for it when they had the cash back offer!!!

      • Purchasing from overseas is an option! As I mentioned I purchased one from Amazon for 60$ (includes shipping) for a model which is smaller, newer and faster :)

        • But from the reports, even WD site, it's inferior! It also sounds like you're fairly limited as to how you stream files across your network on the Play! Big concern for me as it'd be near on useless streaming only from WMC share! (Huge neg there!!!)
The lack of DTS wouldn't be a huge concern for most, but if it's newer, why is it missing? So it's not just the lack of an extra USB port!
But probably, and once again, the biggest concern for most is warranty issues! From all accounts WD in Australia will not warranty products brought in from overseas!

        • And another issue which is a bit rarer nowadays, is if you're tv is PAL only! Which I found my in laws tv is when I gave them my old one. I bought it in the UK, but as I'd been through the USA with it, I had it set to NTSC. By the look of WDs site, the Play is only listed as NTSC!
