Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB $183.20 @ JB Hi-Fi 20% off until 31/12/2013

90

I've been using one of these with the wife and kids on the end of year trip. While in the car we can stream movies and songs to their iPads and iPods while powered through a 2.1A cigarette lighter USB adapter. Great for the drive between Sydney and Melbourne. Also used it with an Apple TV while staying at the mum-in-law's. Wife managed to catch up on literally a season or so worth of TV shows - and not just one series.

Nicked the following from JB's website:

Is this discounted? Why is it a bargain?

  • Well it's 20% off the regular price (everywhere else its $220ish…

Looks like a good drive to take on my next trip..

    • -4

Well it's 20% off the regular price

This would be useful to put in the title or description then, otherwise, it reads just like an advertisement for this product.
There is no mention at all why this was posted as a bargain…

      • +2

Yeah, sorry. More for those who are already aware of the product. I've added the 20% off to the title.

    • Yep, all Seagate HDD's are 20% off at JB at the moment.

Keep in mind that, with this, you're paying for the 2.5" portable form factor, as well as the streaming capabilities. If you just want it for streaming around the house, something like this WD Live would be better.

    • -1

something like this WD Live would be better.

The WD Live does not have any storage…

It's also the built-in battery and wireless base station that makes this product interesting. Back "at home", it equally plays nice as a wireless client and according to the manual, you should be able to access the drive via your main wireless network where the a Wireless Plus is a client.

With all due respect, it's pointless comparing this to a solution that can't be portable.

Calm down mate, I wasn't suggesting the WD My Book Live as a complete alternative to the Seagate. Some people may not realise that the Seagate is specifically suited to portable use (which obviously carries a premium over plain home use ones) and buy it, when the larger capacity of the non-portables would do them more good. Which is why I said "If you just want it for streaming around the house, something like this WD [My Book] Live would be better."

With all due respect, it's pointless comparing this to a solution that can't be portable.

It's just a discussion, ease up.

        • Just because I pointed out the comparison was pointless didn't mean I was worked up over it. :)

Please give your fellow OzBargainers a bit of credit when they weigh up the options. This solution is not for everyone, and there's been heaps of posts in the past for the WD TV Live so it would not be that unfamiliar to people here.

        • Stop it! I hate it when you fight.
          Lalalalalalalala
I don't want you to split up and leave

      • Agreed. This is great for road trip and overseas trips. You can also pair a few devices so they can all get access to the same media library.

It's 183.20 at office works as well..

You can also buy aftermarket firmware for it to from

    • I managed to pick up one for $174

      Where?

      • +1

Office works price matched + 5% off when JB's sale first started.

  • JB have 20% off Seagate drives atm hence the $183.20, officeworks then followed by price matching

  • does anyone know if this could be used on a flight? i like to watch movies on my ipad while flying and i wonder if there would be any restrictions.

    • You cant. But what i do is download to the ipad all the vdo i want to watch on the flight then delete them afterwards and replace with more vdos on my next leg. Make sure u use a good media player the seagate app wasnt that great from what i remebered. Could be wrong as im aure there would be updates since i used it last.

      • You cant.

Is that due to airline regulations?

        • Yes, No radio devices while plane on flight. But i did hear that airlines may be relaxing on the policy.

    • No restrictions. I've been using mine on international flights for a while now.

    • Depends on the airline's policies to tell you the truth. Specially as some airlines e.g. virgin australia, use a wifi distributed in-flight entertainment system wherein you download and activate an app to your android/apple device and connect to the plane's wifi network

  • Don't know why there would be restrictions on this when you can now use WiFi during flight on most carriers… (except for before takeoff and after landing)…

    • I frequently travel by Malaysia and Singapore Airlines and never heard about this on board WIFI service. Do I need to purchase this as an add on option separately?

      • Emirates have it and so do aer lingus on their trans Atlantic flights, I know Qantas trialled it but didn't make the system live. Costs on Emirates were something like $10/50mb from memory.

    • There are restrictions because the wifi equipment onboard the airplane is certified, checked, tested and properly shielded.. ie a known quantity.

They don't allow radiating antennas aka your wifi etc on your phone because who knows where that was made and to what standard or quality or strength of signal.

That's why they allow flight mode (antenna disabled)….. sure 99.99999% of the time most phones are gonna be fine (like alwayslooking using this harddrive for example) in flight mode or not- but when you are dealing with people in the sky, you don't muck around with your policy.

  • Current AUSTRALIAN regulations state:
"All airlines restrict the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices as they can interfere with vital aircraft navigation systems."
    http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_1…

Other countries (USA?) I believe have either trialled or are now allowing calls and wifi on planes, but not in Australia currently.
(By the way, allowing passengers to use wifi and calls etc on their own devices is a completely separate issue to onboard calls and wifi- see my other post).

"Aviation authorities and airlines around the world are engaged in actively assessing the risks presented by mobile phones and portable electronic devices."

aka- nobody wants to be the guy at CASA or the FAA who let a plane fall out of the sky because everyone started playing candycrush or snapchatting hashtagging interwebzing their bffs at the same time. radiated emissions are black magic and we don't really know all the things that can go wrong.

  • Bought this at Officeworks last week, just before Xmas for the regular price of $219. So that's a saving of $40 if I had waited… It is a bit of a niche product but works well for what it does.

    • Ditto - bought from TGG before Xmas for $219. Anyone who did similar should submit a claim for refund of 120% the difference based on their 30 day price guarantee…
