Not much of a deal considering dan murphys sell something similar
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_772232/johnnie-walker-sc…

Only difference is the green label replaced the platinum. From memory green label was discontinued 3 years ago..

    • +3

And you can get another 5% off at Dan Murphys if you can get the Wish GC at discount from the RAA, etc. Would take the Platinum over the Green in the pack.

      Are you an angry drunk?

    • +1

      You seem upset.

    • +8

Most yobbo drunks wouldn't spend this sort of money on scotch… They would rather sink their $149 into as many JW Red's as they can buy.

      • +2

More like jack Daniels and Jim beam.

        • +1

lol .. more like goon bags

    • +12

this is ozbargain, not today tonight or ACA forums!

      • +7

Could've fooled me. I swear some of the commenters are Ray Martin sockpuppets.

    • +7

you think the 'yobo' on the street involved in alcohol violence is drinking the 'upper levels' of johnny walker? thats just delusional..

      • indeed
its the 4 buck 4 litre casket of wine!

    • +6

You are certainly entitled to your opinion in this public forum and so am I. This is one of the most ridiculous alarmist posts I have seen on here for a long time. You appear to have some deeper issues and would suggest seeking some professional counseling.

  • +6

I reckon if you are going to spend that sort of money on scotch, you'd be better off buying a nice single malt. It may not be a bargain, but will be significantly better than what you get from JW

    • +8

Oh…that's strange…you use the word ’logic’ in the same way I use the word ’rant’

    • +1

If you think modifying trading hours is going to stop idiots being idiots, you're either delusional or just stupid. The industry is just a scapegoat here for victims who need someone to blame, and politicians who either don't know how to address the problem or don't have the guts to do so.

    • I'd like to join your secondary cause of the violent non-alcoholics. Those people who are able to be criminals without being fuelled by alcohol… what do I stop buying for them to suffer?

Also, I'm not sure what an earlier closing time for a club would do, except for sending people out in the wild earlier(?) or force them to drink harder and faster or begin earlier in the day.

I think this is more of a cultural than product issue, unless you want prohibition.

    • -1

Are you religious by any chance, hello007?

    • +1

I honestly don't see how JW is related to this issue in anyway. Those who go out and get drunk/etc. and cause violence don't spend $150 on 800mL of Scotch. They buy goon, cheap wine, etc. and mix it with soft drinks. Should we also stop the sale of soft drinks as it promotes mixing?

      Your logic is flawed.

    • do you eat steak with gravy? pasta with red sauce? wine sauce? u know most of those use wine in the sauce,
      u eat chinese food out
they usually use a bit of wine in the cooking
u must be also supporting the alcohol industry

do you bank in a any banks?
cause all of them make loans or have dealings with the alcohol industry, giving them loans, cash flow etc

u must also be supporting the alcohol industry

    • +4

This is a little off topic but what's the point in using Latin when it's just as easy to use English (and there is a direct English translation that contains virtually the same amount of words)?

Also you do realise that when you purchase alcohol from a shop and take it to your house you then have 24/7 access to it? There is a long history of prohibition of alcohol not working and in fact creating more violence and contributing to the uprising of organised crime, rather then reducing closing hours why not work hard on educating our youth on the issues of alcohol and stop the problem at the source.

Besides shouldn't you have saved your argument for a post on $2 wine or cheap beer/spirits where it may have seemed more valid rather than against alcohol that's $186.25 per litre?

    • What worked in Newcastle won't necessarily work in Melbourne. The 1:30am lockout in newcastle impacted 14 venues. The 2am lockout trial in Melbourne impacted 487 venues - and proved to be completely ineffective.

Not to mention the fact that the two cities have different socio-cultural make up, different types of bars/clubs/pubs.

What they should be doing is making the low-end booze more expensive. The consumption of the marginalised drinkers that seem to drive the alcohol-related harm statistics is more price-sensitive. Leave the high-end stuff (which is usually drunk in moderation for the enjoyment of flavour) alone and increase the price on the cheap stuff.

      • lock out at 1:30 means more fights at 1:30
lock out at 2:30 means more fights at 2:30

        not going to stop nothing
pretty much these days stay at home if you don't want something to happen!

I see from your previously posted deals that you like pizza. Pizza causes (a very small minority of) people to become obese and become a massive drain on the health system. Should all pizza deals be banned from OzBargain?

  • -7

    Thanks Silverstone.

    Interesting point.

However, I haven't seen any evidence of pizza eaters then hitting the streets and cowardly bludgeoning innocent 18-year-olds to their deaths… Or cause them to suffer lifelong injuries.

    That's what violent alcoholics do.

    Repeatedly.

It's only luck and good surgeons that prevent more deaths.

    • People play the Knockout Game (assault people) sober.

    • Unless you want complete Prohibition. There will always be alcohol fuelled violence. There is also violence that isn't alcohol related. So the issue in my opinion is the laws aren't tough enough.

      • To be fair - it's probably worse now then ever before. Maybe due to increase media acknowledgment. Maybe it's a generational thing. Regardless it's disgusting

    • +3

It depends on how you view it, violence is a social cost. As is fast food. In fact, 3/5 Australians are obese, it is third largest contributor to the burden of disease (only behind smoking/high blood pressure). Given reductions in smoking and the continuing presence of fast food outlets, it will not surprise me if it rises up to first place. Alcohol, by comparison, is not on the same magnitude. I am of the opinion that in about 60-80 years time, fast food chains such as pizza hut will be viewed in a similar way to how smoking is perceived now.

I'm not condoning violent alcoholics, alcoholism is a problem - but I don't see how you can take such a harsh stance on something like JW scotch and find advertising pizza deals to be permissible. The reality is that both are relatively harmless in moderate quantities, and in excessive quantities they are destructive.

    • what about cars?
drunk people drive cars and kill people

people being chased by cops and run into innocent people and kill people,
      people speed and kill people
people run over kids innocently in driveways

should we also not support the car industry and not buy cars and walk?

      • +1

I get you djones145, but seriously, we can keep going and beat this argument into the ground. We all know hello007 is half Alarmist and half troll.

No one here has the answers, so can we get some opinions on the deal itself?

  • Thanks OP. Whilst I don't find this a bargain for myself, thanks for taking the time to post it.

    Shame your post was hijacked.

  • +2

Two 700ml single malts in the $70-$80 range is better value in my book

  • This thread rocks. So much flawed logic in both sides of the fence.

  • Hey Hello James Bond, I hope you don't mind but I forwarded your CV to Fox News, they are looking to hire a Senior Alarmist and I think you'd be perfect! But in the mean time, while you wait for that call back, have a Coke and a smile :)

  • Thanks for all the great comments.

Excellent to see so many people giving serious thought to this issue.

Interesting to note in today's Daily Telegraph:

They list six cases of king hit punches in Sydney since July 2012 with the latest a man, 19,at Penrith on Saturday. He has a fractured skull and brain bleeding.

How many more before we see our senses?

When will this impact your family and friends?

The Telegraph also lists 1am lockouts, and banning the sale of alcohol 30 minutes before the venue closes as part of a plan to reduce alcohol driven violence.

And the only people I'm ''trolling'' for is the safety of you, your family, friends and community.

Put yourself in the shoes of the families affected by this violence. Look through the temptations of the amber fluid and the miasma of commercial self-interest PR spin generated by the alcohol industry and see sense on this issue.

Also I have never advocated prohibition - just reasonable measures to reduce alcohol fuelled violence.

    Welcome all comments.

I know that this comment may be deleted but what the heck.

I had a drink of water tonight and I really want to punch you. Should we ban water consumption? Or is it that you deserve to be punched irregardless?

      • water is the biggest killer in the world! 100% of all killers use it

100% of all death people use the product before dying
