Cherry MX switches - Testbed of 6 types of switch. $29.36USD delivered.

70

This item is a set of 6 Cherry MX switches (Blue, Red, Brown, Black, Green, White) and keycaps with the base to mount them into.

If you're looking at buying a nice keyboard with mechanical switches ($150+) then it's best to know which kind of switch you like prior to purchasing. Otherwise you've just wasted $150.

Note: You can email [email protected] to (try) have a MX White included.

This is a niche product. It's not for people who are happy with cheap keyboards. But with 226 people signed up on massdrop so far, obviously there's some demand.

Usual price is $33.36. This is not a huge discount, but allegedly they are running at-cost for this group buy.

PS: Originally I didn't think this was a good deal. There is an equivalent coolermaster product, but it is very expensive to ship from the UK (46 Euro). The US Coolermaster store only ships to USA and shipping forwarders negate any price benefit. There is also a Max keys product which only has 4 switches in it. After doing my research, I changed my mind and thought this was a good deal.

  • Can't you just go into DS or JB and try out a few keyboards instead?

    • +1

Do DS & JB actually stock mechanical keyboards? I've honestly never looked!

      • DS stocks the Logitech G710+ which has brown switches and JB stocks the Razer Blackwidow which has blue switches. So you can try brown and blue switches there, don't know about the rest.

  • Interesting idea.. I'd imagine it would be difficult to decide which switch you'd like with just one though. Without being able to type on them naturally that is. It might be a better idea to visit a specialist computer shop and test some of the display keyboards, I know that Scorptec occasionally have mech keyboards to test.

    • Yes, it will still be hard with just one switch. But it'll certainly help quite a bit.

Better to have one test switch than only researching on the internet.. people's attempts to describe feel and sound means your expectations may not be met.

This product is kind of like an insurance policy. Some people won't feel the need.

this would be interesting….but it is a bit expensive….I love the Cherry MX Red switches on my Osmium

You could just get this for 25aud
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cherry-Blue-Red-Brown-Black-Sampl…

It's not like there's many clear/green keyboards anyway

    • got this 1.
anyone wants to trade let me know

If you wanted to try some out in person i believe MechKB will let you try a few out
http://www.mechkb.com/ their shop is in silverwater (sydney)

Their 4 key sampler is 12$ which i believe is very cheap. I am not sure about postage but pickup is my option

    • That's the MAX kit that I talk about.

Mechkb are out of stock of it, as are most places. So when you find somewhere that has it and add postage, it's no longer cheap. I'm suspicious that places aren't restocking it, but it's hard to be sure.

The MAX is fine if you can get hold of it and don't want to investigate other switch types. Personally, I'm wanting to check out the clears too for a future keyboard massdrop.

You could also get your option and then buy the green/clear/white later.. but as they are rarer switches the price probably ends up being a bit higher overall.

Damn, i wish more stores had one of these to test out the different keys.

Been wanting to check out mechanicals, but cant decide on what switches i would ultimately like.

Anyone know a good place to try them in Adelaide?

    • dont know of any stores that have a good range of mechanical boards in Adelaide. i ended up using Geekhack to trade a few until i found one i liked,

      • Who dat?

  • course you could get a Topre keychain, they never sold them (promo item) but the going price for 1 of these is around $60 on the used market

    http://i.imgur.com/RfeW9.jpg

    • Why would I want this?

  • I wish Topre's were also on these, but they're patented I think.

Nonetheless extremely good product. You can read reviews all you want, but actually pressing down on them is a whole different thing.

  • Can get it for $18.55usd posted to Australia.

If you don't care about flashy layouts and just want to test keys http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/wasd-sampler-kit.html… is cheaper.

Note: Cherry MX Green can be made by replacing the spring in the Blue switch with the spring from the Black or Clear switch.

Also if you want more info on mechanical keyboards http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/buying_guid… is a good place to start.

    • Yes, but then you have to mount them yourself. The WASD kit is nice - but mounting isn't easy.

This has me shaking my head and laughing so hard. $30 for a sampler? something something old time keyboards old time prices.

Anyone thinking of getting one should make a group on ozbargain, get one and then when you're done trying it out ship it to the next person on the list.

wouldn't it be great if these had a usb port on them and some kind of rudimentary software allowing you to bind them to various functions on your pc? rather than chucking them out or, in an ideal world, passing them around to the next sampler…

  • This is a good idea. Thanks OP.
