FWIW, I got one of these in the last deal and am quite impressed with it. It was the first canvas I'd bought and I was worried about the level of detail that might be possible in the image, but it's better than I expected.

    • +2

I agree. I was pleased with the quality. It looks great above a bed, it's just the right shape and size.

What was the resolution of the photo you used?

      • 3000 x 4000 pixels, taken with a 5MP camera

        • +3

If it were that resolution, it would be 12MP…

bit of waiting time…but this one is $49 if you dont mind wait a couple of weeks.
Not sure if Big W does a better job printing and stretching.

    • +7

Plus $10 postage makes your $49 deal equal $59! Big W better as can pick up and inspect, and get remade if defective.

what's the minimum resolution of photos so it doesn't look pixelated on a canvas this size?

    • Would like to know aswell. atm i'm using a picture that's 5184 pixles width x 3456 pixels height.

And it looks slightly blurry, but im not too sure.

    • +1

When it's printed on canvas it will look a little blurry anyway (texture of the canvas). Besides that I'd say you were looking for about 150dpi as a sensible minimum - which at 40" width gives you 6000 pixels wide, plus a bit for the depth and mounting.

That's the kind of resolution I've used before when printing on canvas, and its worked fine.

      • +2

Aw damn, anyone know where to find 6000 pixel wide images? Trying to look for black & white city photos (so cliche).

        • +6

Add imagesize:6000x3000 to a Google images search

        • Would be great if anyone can link to relevant hi res (free) images!

        • +2

Use my advice above to find high-res images like this one

Alternatively, if you have an iPhone 4S or above you can shoot up to 38MP using the panorama feature in the built-in camera app in iOS 6 and above.

        • cheers, works!

        • What kind of images are you looking for?

        • Just an idea, but if you have an appropriate Android phone then the photosphere camera mode spits out pretty damn good panoramas with very little effort, particularly with KitKat and the recent improvements.

Portrait orientation, then snap five images in a horizontal line and you have an instant high res shot. If you want a taller shape, just add extra snaps to it.

If you go the whole hog you can get a 360 deg shot as a panorama (eg http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/73441-thumb/goog… )

To avoid pixellation or blurriness, make sure your image has at least 200 pixels per inch of print size (300 dpi is best). For this resolution, at 300 dpi, that would be a whopping 72 MP file!!! I own a great, high quality photo upsizing program called Benvista Photozoom. You could try the demo version, but some graphic programs watermark their output. Or you could download the "free" torrent version. Or if you upload the image to a file hoster, I could upsize it for anyone who is interested. Also, you probably want to apply additional sharpening after upsizing.

Since you are folking out $60, you want to see optimum results.

      • Thankyou for mentioning Benvista Photozoom; never thought there'd be dedicated image resizing programs but Photoshop just doesn't cut it sometimes with low DPI images. I'll give it a go.

Bear in mind people, this is canvas, not a Retina display.
    You don't really need 20MP+

    • +1

Yes I agree! You're mainly looking at a distance (a few metres?) just depend on where you intend to put it)
Saw a few done just from normal 12-15 megapixel photos, quality is fine (obviously your original need to be good/sharp..,)

    • +2

true, the images will look just a bit blurry if you look at them from >1m distance, but since it's a huge canvas viewing them from >2-3m is going to be just fine! In the last 3-4 months I have purchased 4 big size canvases from snapfish and photobox. The photobox ones look sharper than snapfish but the color is a bit off and there is a lot of black detail missing. The snapfish ones look perfect from > 2m distance.

BTW: the pic of the deal is not a 50x100cm canvas but a "more" panoramic ratio

    • In my first comment I mentioned I was happy with the output. It's a 5MP image so by all accounts should not look any good but I view it from 2-4m in its location. I wouldn't want to view it from 20cm regularly but that's true for pretty much any item in the house.

    • +1

yeah 300dpi sounds a bit excessive.. i'm not going to hold a meter wide canvas 10cm from my face like my phone after all :p

    • Most sensible comment yet. I had one printed from a cropped 12mp photo taken on an entry level dslr last year. Quality is good. Up close, you can see a little fuzz but this totally disappears when you view it properly

  • Similar deal available at OueDeal http://www.ourdeal.com.au/deal/mojopro-canvas-prints-60x60-o…

Can any one comment on the quality from mojopro?

Edit: Not very good reviews for mojopro http://www.productreview.com.au/p/mojopro.html

    • +2

Can't comment on mojopro, but definitely stay away from ourdeal

  • I got one of these done last time and the quality is surprisingly very good.

Will definitely be doing another one sometime soon.

  • Thanks OP. I purchased 1last deal and the quality was fantastic. Will be buying again.

  • Is it just me or does my 6000x3000 picture get resized down to 4000x2000 when I upload it to a folder on the website?

    • Mine wasnt quite 6000x3000 but got resized to 4000x2000 as well

  • +1

I Haven't had any printed from BigW but have used the fabness deals when they pop up $49+10 shipping for same size.
Quality is very good. The max size they allow or it seems to me is 15mb jpegs.
I'm using a Nikon D800 files which are large so I find myself reducing the size and usually end up around the 5000px mark on the long end always at 240dpi.

You can't go wrong. For reference I have printed from a D700 with great results too.

  • Wow. Perfect timing thanks OP.

Any thoughts on how this might go with a scanned image? I have a book of an artists work. Can't afford originals but if I could scan a painting from the book and print it like this it would be great.

  • Groupon has same size canvas print via minibox for $49 + $10 delivery. Also other sizes.
    http://www.groupon.com.au/deals/national-deal/gg-minibox-1-1…

  • Good price, just need a house to put this in…

    • There are cheap flights to NZ so you could buy a house there. Cheaper because it's a third world country? ;-)

  • I think BigW must pass images thru a filter if they are greater than 300dpi and then scale them: I had a sharp image I created that was 16,000x7,200 pixels at 600dpi that I had printed on two 12"x18" prints during the last special and the print turned out blurrier than the original.

It's still okay, but nowhere near as sharp as from an inkjet printer at 1:1 resolution.

    • 600dpi is a bit silly for a 12x18in

72dpi would be enough for such a small print

  • I see that these are stretched over a wooden frame.
Does anyone know if it would be possible to take it off the wooden frame and frame it as if it was a painting?
Or would it just bounce back like pizza dough and end up being all distorted/wrinkled?

    • +2

I haven't tried to do that, but if it helps, here's a pic of the back of my BigW canvas, so you can try and assess the idea better for yourself - http://imgur.com/CPSuIDJ

      • Hey thanks for that. Judging by the lack of tension apparent on the staples it doesn't look ridiculously tight.
        Whee!

For anyone after canvas prints in other sizes, the Fabness deal bbourizk mentioned is on again: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130007

They have the same price as this deal, but will be shipped to your address for the same price as in-store pick up. They also have a bunch of other sizes if you don't have panoramic proportion photos you want printed. If anyone has tried both services, maybe they can comment on differences of Big W to Fabness?

  • What are you guys putting on this size canvas?

I need ideas as I don't currently have anything this long

The big w online photo this doesn't allow me to do a mixture of small photos in this size does it?

    • +1

sorry to hear you don't have anything long enough ;)

      • Hahaha

    • +3

Use some sort of photo collage maker, there's plenty online. It's also pretty easy to do in MS paint, just make a custom size like 12000x6000 and paste in resized photos. Save it as a .tif and probably a jpg/png as well incase they don't support tif.

      • Great idea. Thanks!

    • a nice big black and white panorama of new york city

    • Hi Twisty, see the Fabness deal also on. It's the same effective price as this deal for that size, but they also offer less wide aspect rations as well (at differing prices). May suit your photos more.

  • Looking for a nice beach with surfing size waves photo. pref some kind of tree in the foreground corner. Anyone know where to find something?

    • You can start by searching google images changing the search settings filter to show only >4K images

If anyone is interested, I used a Bierstadt painting- The last of the buffalo. Ended up at 4000x2496 pixels.

    http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albert_Bierstadt_-_Th…

Just click on the different sizes at the bottom of the pic.

  • Hmmm you can use copyrighted material right?

    • No different to an ISP being the 'carrier' of copyrighted works. You would be infringing, not the photo printing technician.

  • It is saying my pix is too low resolution - will that mean it'll be a bit blurry, or really not good at all?

  • has the site been ozbargained? i can't log in. Btw the A4 softcover photobook is half price too. I have a photobook and canvas waiting at checkout for me. So knckered today after spending all night creating photobook!
