    Price seems good but…

    Note:
This will be possibly quite harsh and dirty square wave. Dont let a $12 converter kill your $800 laptop! Consider getting a name-brand pure sine wave double-insulated converter, if you care about your stuff.

    • Hmmm…

I'd say it would be good to use an Oscilloscope to
-view- its output waves - under load - to see how
close the come to being pure Sine waves.

Most UPS's are modified sine wave, even brand name units like APC at the cheaper end of the scale. I would be reluctant however to run anything expensive off an inverter featuring unknown quality. Buying the cheapest inverter possible to power pricey hardware…. the maths, it doesn't make sense.

      • Its been done… usually "hairy"(dirty) square waves following sort of stepped sinus pattern - some distorted to one or the other side.
The insulation issue is real and present danger though. Ever seen mass produced Chinese soldering? Can get awfully messy. Often you are a bees dick away from the whole unit carrying 240v. Now this can is presumably metal, the car is made of metal too… would be nothing for one of these to find a convenient path to earth through the human.

    • If you wanted to power your laptop in the car, you would be better getting a car power adapter (DC->DC) for your laptop, and avoiding the inverter (DC -> AC -> DC) altogether.

    • It cannot damage your laptop unless you're running the inverter directly into the laptop without the charger to regulate the power.

  • Car Inverter - very handy to have. I had few different ones - from $10-20 from China, $30-40 Kmart and $100+ Targus. To my own experience, life expectancy is proportional to the price, from few months to 2 years. All ended up in smoke after a year or two max. Burning smell, smoke comes up under normal usage and condition. Will use in a work car as fully maintained but will hesitate to use in private vehicle if it stuffs the car fuses or causes fire.

  • I bought this model a few years back for $20 posted and it has never missed a beat, however it does get really hot if you're using 100-150w (i.e laptop charger) over a few hours.
