testing the waters before entering the market…

I got 5 pairs of jeans from uniqlo for $100 at the Christmas sales in Nagoya.

    • +1

Rather the actual store was meant to be opened by Christmas, so this is actually a smart contingency plan.

    • +6

I was in Tokyo last year and bought Jeans and Chinos for about $15. No sale.

      • same, bought cheap strides from the store in Ginza & ending up buying more for $25 in San Francisco last month.

    • stores opening in melb cbd start of april regardless. more likely it's for staff training / marketing

  • This isn't really a 'bargain' nor a 'deal' as this is their standard pricing. Not only that the Djokovic range is over priced, i picked up his US Open Polo last year for $38AU…. $69AU locally. What a rip!

I also bought 5 pairs of jeans for $100AU in Uniqlo Shinjuku early last year…..

    • +1

Well its Australia Tax. It's meant to double the price for local consumers in order to balance the "economy".

Anyway like tko said they are definitely just testing the waters but I do hope they open a retail shop here since their stuff are quite good.

      • +1

They are opening a retail shop in the Myer Emporium… whenever that finally gets completed!

Current scheduled completion is March 2014. As a nearby resident, I'm hoping construction works finish ASAP.

        • OH?!

Now that is exciting. Can't wait for the Myer Emporium.

        • Muji (another Japanese retailer) is also opening at the Emporium. There is a Muji store at Chadstone right now though.

        • Don't see the appeal of Muji, just over priced. Been to Muji in four countries, only bought a nail clipper so far.

        • !!! Did not know that so exciting!

    • +4

This is NOT standard pricing - this is about double their standard pricing.

Another international company coming to milk the Aussie masses…

      • +1

        Agreed +1

This is double their standard pricing. But also factor in our crazy overhead compared to overseas operations.

Still great to see them come down under and hopefully expand to Sydney. I hope they do follow their overseas stores and rotate stock with weekly sales. That's the time to buy!

  • I wish I'd known about Uniglo when I was in Japan a little while ago. Last week I ordered a bunch of stuff from thier sale on the the US website to be delivered to my hotel when I get there later - of course I arranged w' hotel first. They won't take Aus cc either. They have some great stuff.

Yes, this pop up is the usual over priced Aus prices.

  • More of a forum/news topic, I agree.

Uniqlo outside of Japan seems to be expensive. In NY 2012, prices were double of what I remembered they were in Japan 2011. I didn't really check Uniqlo on my recent trip to Japan (Dec 2013 - Jan 2014), but jeans at GU (cheaper Uniqlo spin-off) were about AUD10. I imagine Uniqlo would have been about AUD20.

    • +2

Singapore is good during the sales period…$60 for Uniqlo jeans is definitely not an Ozbargain.

    • +2

prices are very inexpensive outside of Japan too. uniqlo prices are available to be viewed on their intl sites. currently basic jeans are only 30 usd. and Japanese denim only $50. and uniqlo has pretty drastic sales quite regularly. I stock up on uniqlo basics every time I visit Hong Kong. 60 bucks for basic jeans is bull crap. australia gets shafted again.

      • If uniqlo has "drastic sales quite regularly", maybe their AU sale prices will be more on par with Japan normal prices.

When I checked out the NYC flagship store, I wasn't impressed with the quality and pricing. It just seemed much cheaper in Japan.

I've always read this from a distance as UNIQLD lol

  • I loved UNIQLO in Japan. Got some nice, cheap tshirts and a great pair of jeans that they altered to my size on the spot while I waited! That was way back in '06 so surprised it's taken so long to make it here.

Just came back from Tokyo. These stores were everywhere including the subway. Its equivalent here would be like cotton on, just jeans etc. Really average stuff. Of course they will promote it here as high end, and hope people will fall for it. Give it a miss at the local rip off prices!!!!

  • +1

Would not buy uniqlo jeans for $59.90 as the quality is not that good. $39.90 would be more reasonable from them in Australia IMHO.

  • Got a bit excited cos we are visiting melbourne end of feb or early march. We are based in Perth so there's absolutely nothing much here. While we are on topic of retail shops, do u guys know when the h and me is opening in melbourne? Hopefully the uniqlo will open by time we get there!

Can melbourne locals let me know what the better shopping centres are in melbourne?

  • I found Uniqlo in London to be quite cheap. Stocked up on Airism tops, which are working a treat in this 40 degree weather.

  • Got some UNIQLO stuff from Tokyo back in 2006 and it was amazing. Stupidly cheap yet very well made and from heavy gauge fabric. Very impressed to say the least. Went to NYC last year and just had to go into the UNIQLO store there and was ready to spend spend spend but walked out with nothing. Everything was very VERY thin and very average quality. Very disappointed :(

So, is it only Japan that gets the good stuff or have they done what everyone else has and reduced their quality over time (or both)?

    • Maybe it's just completely seasonal. You won't find anything work thick fabric in summer seasons and anything with thin fabrics in winter seasons. I wanted to get some Airism underlayers for summer here when in hk, no go as the only underlayers available are heatecs as they are preparing for winter months. ended up getting some thick fabric button down shirts.

    • It's the same product in Japan that you would have seen in NYC. The jeans especially are certainly not heavy gauge fabric now.
I bought a couple of chinos from uniqlo last month in Japan during weekend sales they always have. 2000 yen, can't go wrong with that. But yes, quite thin. You get what you pay for now.

      • No it's not the exact same. Depends on region and season.

For example I was in Japan, Malaysia and Korea and Hong Kong within a 10 day period, went to Uniqlo in each country and found out the same product (jeans) which had the same product number were of different material/quality.

I've got two pairs of seasonal relaxed straight fit (both are the exact same product number). One pair was made in Bangladesh and the other pair was made in China. Go figure.

        • It's not uncommon at all to see their products manufactured in both Bangladesh and China as well as Vietnam. They have a very complex but tight supply chain, that we in Procurement actually refer to when doing case studies. All raw material is provided by uniqlo to the manufacturers which is one of the things they use to differentiate themselves from others.
If you have noted a different quality product for the same product it should have been raised with uniqlo management.
It's not normal and goes against their strict quality standards.

No idea about Malaysia, Korea and Hong Kong but between Japan, USA & Singapore it most certainly IS the same quality product as it is supposed to be.

        • Don't need to lecture the master… i am a Procurement Specialist ;)

But yes, one of my old uni mates works for Sourcing at Uniqlo in Japan (he is a japanese national) and they source from different countries and not all countries will have the exact same product or product range.

      • Actually it's not. Firstly sizing and fit varies between countries, Japan gets newer (different) seasonal stock than the rest of the world, and Japan has some exclusive stock not found elsewhere (some things still made in Japan).

Quality has certainly declined over the years, especially the jeans, but at least the denim is still sourced from the Kaihara mills in Japan. If that were to ever change, then I'd stop purchasing uniqlo denim.

        • I should have been more specific, basically I do agree 100% with you.
What I was trying to point out (and failing to do so) was that the identical product is the same quality in Japan as it is in say Singapore for example. All the more reason why the pricing we are getting in Australia is a bad deal for us.

For example. If you were to purchase a pair of their brown 98/2 cotton spandex chino (cant recall the product range name offhand) in Singapore and in Japan, the product is identical in quality because the raw materials come from the same source. The finished product still goes through the same qa process to confirm it meets the specification they required. Much like any steel fabrication work.

Absolutely agree that different regions have different product ranges that are not available elsewhere. Japan quite often has limited edition ranges that I like to collect that can't be obtained elsewhere. No argument regarding different sizing as well, it all comes from the same process though. uniqlo have a supply chain that's much like apples, very efficient. uniqlo and apple are pretty much the two main vendors procurement & supply chain professionals tend to use as an example of a efficient supply chain.

Hope that makes more sense :)

  • I bought a pair of jeans from UNIQLO NYC store and it was around US$ 50-ish/pair so it's not cheap. Later on I found out they are the main sponsor for MoMa Free Friday Nights so I guess it's not so bad because they give back some profit to the community.

  • +3

That will be sweet if free jeans alteration service comes with the purchase.

    • Free alteration service is an Asia thing… Most clothing shops (eg. H&M and Zara) in Asia offer this.

  • +1

As always Australians get ripped of.

  • +2

Checked out their sister brand GU when I was in Japan last month. 990 Yen for their jeans and that's the normal price. I've bought UNIQLO jeans from HK, KL and Japan, all works out about AU$20/pair. Good quality for the price but I will not buy them for AU$60…

They are trying to upmarket UNIQLO brand and make the cheaper brand GU.

    • +1

No, they are just charging the usual Australian prices. Uniqlo is still cheap in Asia.

  • Sheesh I was hoping Uniqlo in Australia would bring the value/quality/plain colours nexus that I so value in their stores overseas. $60 for their jeans is a rip. Sigh. Will have to keep getting friends to buy overseas.

  • How is this a bargain? What is the normal price? Based on overseas price, it is definitely no deal
