  • how reliable are catch of the day? I don't hear too many good things about them.

I have no real experience with returns, but they sent me the wrong item once and just gave me a full refund and let me kept the wrong item. They also gave me $20 credit because of the birthday sale. They certainly better than the likes of kogan or Disksmith.

used them several times when didn't want to bother going to a store. When I had to return a couple of runners, just went to their website and they sent me a pre-paid post label and then got full credit (of course, excluding postage).

First time I've heard Hitachi is a no name HDD.

HGST/Hitachi is certainly not no name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HGST

And where does Officeworks sell a 1TB portable Seagate for $80? The cheapest listed on their website is $89: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

have a couple for backup and they work just fine. slightly larger but thinner than my WD Elements 1TB.

Dude, Hitachi invented perpendicular recording technology that all HDD are using now including Seagate. There wouldn't even be a 2.5" 1TB disk without this technology.

awesome price, just bought one, thanks!!

Hitachi has a very good reputation for making some of the most reliable drives. We frequently used then in very large storage clusters. Far more reliable than seagate or WD.

Pity they were bought by WD, however as far as I understand, there is still separation in the manufacturing, so the drives should still be 'hitachi' manufactured - if that makes sense.

Anyway, I grabbed a few of these myself today as they are great value.

Whats the story of the warning?

    • I was wondering that myself. I don't see a warning and the tags look normal?

Click "revisions" (on the toolbar between deal title and description) and watch the titanic struggle between theearth and aaa.

          Anyhow, I bought one. Hurrah!

Can get Toshiba Canvio® 3.0 1TB Portable HDD form Office Works for $79
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…
Only slightly more expensive but much easier to deal with in case of warranty repairs or replacement plus no waiting for postage.

    • +1

I would take Hitachi over Toshiba any day.

      • me too, just because they've got a good reputation. Not sure about now, but in the past ThinkPads always come with Hitachi hard disks which isn't surprising as HGST is the result of a merger between IBM and Hitachi's HDD divisions.

  • Sold out!

If the price were right, we would be buying nothing but Hitachi drives. They have been rock solid, and have had a remarkably low failure rate.
