Can I ask if anyone knows the country of manufacture for this particular model? Very tempted by the price, but prefer quality over cost.

    • Hi digitalaxon, thank you for your question.
My Name is Emile Theodore and i am the E-commerce Coordinator at AL-KO International.

Thank you for your fast response… In terms of the lawn movers you have on your site, is there a way to easily determine country of origin (such as a price point that any movers over $600 are built in x.y.z country etc).

          Hi Digitalaxon,
          That's a great question.
All of our lawn mowers are German Engineered and Manufactured in Obdach - Austria, with the exception of the Classic 4.24 P-S and the Classic 4.64 SP-S which are German Engineered and Manufactured in China.

Engineered in Germany, made in China. Just like BMW :) Aside with the jokes, I am wary of a 1 year warranty period as my Victa broke down in 2 years.Had the warranty been longer, I may consider purchasing.

How does this compare with similar priced models at Bunnings, ie. Victas and Hondas.

    • Hi djpro,
      thanks for your questions.
I cant comment directly on how our models compare to similar priced lawn mowers but would suggest you compare their specifications and warranty terms to ours.
In particular, Deck Material, Blade Configuration, Catcher Size, Cutting Height Adjustment configuration, wheel size and the inclusion of self propelled functionality and operator presence control (safety stop).
Im confident you will be impressed with the AL-KO.

      In regards to warranty,
we have no expectation that the lawn mower will fail just outside of warranty.
In the event that you lawn mower does fail inside of it's warranty period, under or replacement warranty, we are responsible for picking up your old mower and replacing it with a brand new unit. This service is at no cost to the end user.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to comment below.
      Cheers,
      Emile

we have no expectation that the lawn mower will fail just outside of warranty.

so if your dont expect them to fail just outside of there 1 year warranty why dont you give them a 2 years warranty then? surely it is because you really do expect a certain percentage to fail in there second year?

        • Are they based in Australia trading on a ABN?

Maybe you can get them to fix it anyways within 2 years via Statutory Warranty Laws?

For a ordinary household, a lawn mower would most likely be used less than 10 times a year, You can argue that a lawn mower should work atleast over 50 times. Hence why it should last atleast 5 years.

So arguing that it should last atleast 2 years, should be reletively easy.

Hi Emile, why do you say it comes with a 1 year warranty when the website suggests a 3 year warranty?

    "WARRANTY
AL-KO warrants that, subject to the exclusions and limitations below, the Product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 2 years from date of purchase (with the exception of the Classic 4.24 & 4.64 series lawn mowers and the HWA1001 and Hydrocontrol which will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 3 years).

    • Hi Damoo,
      Thanks for highlighting that.
There seems to have been an error made during the warranty page amendment process.
The correct warranty statement should be as follows:

AL-KO warrants that, subject to the exclusions and limitations below, the Product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 2 years from date of purchase (with the exception of the Classic 4.24 & 4.64 series lawn mowers which will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 1 year and the HWA1001 and Hydrocontrol which will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 3 years).

No worries, that counts me out but thanks anyway.
I guess Al Ko's faith in its 'stringent' quality standards only extends to the bare minimum required by australian law.
It's much easier (and cheaper) to say the word stringent than it is to stand behind the quality of a product with warranty.

  • I was thinking to buy in case of 2-3 years warranty like Aldi ones. I am out as well. I will wait for the next Ozbargain

    Cutting width: 46cm (Single Blade)

Unless your lawn is already well maintained (free of debris, free of tree root systems, and is somewhat level) then I can not recommend anyone purchase this.

A single blade push mower is highly susceptible to shaft damage. It only takes the user to hit an object the mower can't budge, for the shaft (and subsequently the engine) to potentially receive major damage.

I would recommend most people purchase a swing blade push mower.

      Hi Suit,
      Thanks for your comment.
Generally speaking, i would suggest that extreme care is taken when mowing a lawn that is not free of debris, tree root systems and large dirt mounds.

Hidden debris and exposed roots are a safety concern with any blade format (swing back included).
From a maintenance perspective, a bar blade is much simpler and safer.

I have heard stories of poorly maintained swing back blades wearing through the hinge bolts resulting in a sharp hardened steel projectile.

      A scary thought.

      Cheers,
      Emile

My issue isn't regarding the safety of single blade mowers, or swing back mowers for that matter.

Whilst I personally haven't heard of a swing back mower throwing a blade and maiming an individual, I do not doubt the possibility. Mowers are no different to an automobile. Poor maintenance leads to undesirable and sometimes devastating results.

The purpose of my post was to inform those, on this forum, to the disadvantages of having a single blade push mower. IMHO, one should only view single blade push mower, as a finishing mower for well kept lawn. Not the average person's, somewhat semi-neglected, grassed area.

And yes, whilst swing back systems require more time/effort to replace the blades, they come with the advantage of the blades being (generally) cheaper to replace.

Quote: "From a maintenance perspective, a bar blade is much simpler and safer"

A maintained swing back mower is no more dangerous than a maintained single blade mower.

      • I have heard stories of poorly maintained swing back blades wearing through the hinge bolts resulting in a sharp hardened steel projectile.

Really? My 15 year old Victa commando has been used and abused and I've yet to loose a blade. Could be that they are rusted on now though.

  • I will buy one, but only if the rep does the comparisons for me. we've just bought a house with a large front and backyard, land size approx 1000m2, minus the house, is approx 700m2 of yard mostly grass at this stage, landscaping to be done soon.

How does this compare to other mowers in the same price, quality, lifespan, materials and ease of use? please list in point form if you can, thanks :)

    • Congrats on your house.
Did you ask the real estate agent to do all the comparisons for you when you were house hunting? LOL!

      • yes i did :) also i double checked the figures myself to make sure i wasn't getting ripped off.

    • +1

its single blade. nuff said. avoid it and go with a proper mower designed more for aussie yards.

      • i still dont understand, how many blades do you need, 2? that would mean that you have then 4 cutting edges? if the motor is powerful enough and the thing is self propelled, even if slow (at least i dont have to push the thing) then wont 1 be enough? can you give me an example of an entry level mower that has more than 1 blade?

        • +1

Swing back vs single bar systems aren't about how many blades there are, but about how they are attached.

Swing back system are designed so that the blades 'swing back' upon hitting a hidden unmovable object (root/rock/etc.) Single bar system are fixed, and are far more susceptible to damage upon hitting the same object.

        • +1

NO, other than swing back blades, the AL-KO appears to be a much better option. However, I personally wouldn't purchase either one.

Also IMO, bag like catchers (like on the eBay mower) are hopeless unless the grass you are cutting is nice and dry.

I've sent you a PM, MB.

    • Did you ask your husband/wife do the comparison for you (listed in point form) before you got married? :-)

      • haha, i did ask her a long time ago if she was the short term or long term type.

    • +1

      Congratulations on your purchase.

      I understand money would/must be at a premium…

However, I would personally recommend you look at Victa Corvette 550. My sister just purchased one, upon my recommendation.

She was able to get one for just over $400 (maybe $405 or $410, I can't exactly remember) from her local mower shop, oiled and tested. Plus it came with a free service after the first 5 hours of usage.

This Victa is Briggs & Stratton powered, has readystart, swing back blades, is mulch compatible, and has large wheels both front and back (far better manoeuvrability). However, it is not self propelled.

Also, from my experiences, the Victa's body and catcher design are excellent at dealing with wet/dewy grass, which is sometimes unavoidable. I currently own a Honda powered Victa, and it's mulching and it's ability to deal with dewy/wet grass, is far better than my previously owned Honda branded push.

I will not neg this deal, as it has its value. Also, I am not associated with any business or company. I'm, just speaking from my experience and subsequent knowledge base.

Free shipping means it's effectively cheaper on your own ebay listing…that's pretty sneaky, so neg from me.

  • another couple of options for those interested?

  • Hi Rep,
How do Alko built engines compare with those of the trusted Briggs and Stratton? It appears you have Briggs and Stratton engines in the more expensive models.
