Not the best deal (previous deals were as low as $664) but good enough.

In case someone feels the urge in the Chinese New Year with his/her lucky money… :)

  • Apparently today is the last day you can get 4.8% cashback with Qwibble from the Dell site.

I'm impressed at how these never really manage to come down in price. I bought a U27xx three years ago for roughly the same price - must be a good money spinner for Dell.

    • Well considering the new one is a new one… it's like the iPhone. It's the latest and greatest with no similar competitor to match it on the price level.

You pay for the service, not the product with dell.

Unless you're married to the implied higher quality than ebay IPS, I wouldn't bother. I am typing on an ebay IPS, here at work and I have a 30 inch IPS at home. Both decent. The 30 was less than the 2713.

Also, if your monitor is faulty, dell tend to send you repaired models for replacement. I'm guessing the 2713 addresses some of the frailties of the 2711, though. Just beware. They will try to stuff you over, sending you other people's faulty monitors in place. They'll do it fast, though. It's just a bit of a hassle to get another monitor, spot another and different problem - and then have to have them come back, rinse and repeating until you get what you want.

(That was the u2711 experience - think they had a torrid time with that product).

    • I was thinking about getting an ebay one, is there any major cons to the one you purchased?

  • I'm waiting for a deal on their new 24" UHD panel. At the moment it costs more than a 60" LED smart TV with 3D.

Please don't compare desktop monitors with TVs. There's a price difference per inch (hah) for many reasons.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l… isn't on the Aussie site yet, Dell's Australia markup isn't too vile so should be under $1000

If you can stand 30hz without your eyes falling out that is.

That 28" is a TN 8-bit panel, inferior to IPS 10-bit 24", hence cheaper.

Perfectly fine for non-video professionals (who value gamut, contrast and resolution above all).

        • I get where you're coming from, just assumed that pros who need color accuracy etc know what they're looking for.

That leaves it in a bit of a weird place as to who it's actually good for, I'm just going to save up and wait for the UP2414Q to drop a bit.

        • I'm not sure what 30hz will look like (I thought LCDs didn't flicker like CRTs) but if it means my games are going to be capped at 30 fps with vsync on (or have tearing effects with it off), it's not good enough.

        • my games are going to be capped at 30 fps with vsync on

You'll need a pretty powerful video card to push more than 30 fps at medium quality at 4K, and you can't do less 'cause panel doesn't feature a scaler - it's 4K or nothing.

wait for the UP2414Q to drop a bit.

For desktop use, considering that Windows fixed scaling leaves much to be desired, unfortunately, the only practical choice for 4K is for 28" at 1:1 scaling. [Instead of redesigning Windows' chrome to become resolution-independent, MS wasted their engineering effort on Retro8 that nobody asked for. Now they're behind Pear company on both mobile and desktop, well done, MS.]

My graphics card can scale… I've never heard of a monitor that can only run its native res and nothing less. I always have the option of black borders, or the image looking stretched and pixellated. I prefer the borders.

        • Just use the graphics card to render at a lower resolution and then scale up. Graphics cards tend to do a beter job of scaling anyway, I find.

      • The price difference only seems to exist for this monitor. Most are not so pronounced.
