Asus Vivotab Smart ME400C 10.1" 64GB Windows 8 Tablet $199 at DSE (NOT ONLINE)

360

Bought this at Dick Smith in Busselton when we were down there on holidays. These do not appear any longer on DSE website. It appears to be store stock only as both Busselton and Bunbury stores had stock and had listed as same price. Cheapest I have seen a full Win 8 tablet for from a name brand. No need to comment about atom processors not being fast enough - this is a great price! Hope others can find stock.

  • As soon as I bought mine online last week they took it off straight away so I couldn't post it. I am very happy with it. Upgraded to Win 8.1 and updated the Bios and it runs great. Played a few games and watched a movie on it with no hickups as yet. Very happy with it. It's worth the $199 but not more IMO.

  • I was considering buying this even at $300 despite being happy with my purchase of the surface rt ($223) due to the fact that this is full Win 8.1 so you can install your favorite apps.

Good deal - hopefully there's more stock st my local DSE in Victoria.

  • This is running the older Atom processors so expect some lag. The new quad core BayTrail Atom processors are MUCH quicker with a faster graphics processor also and this is fast enough for most users. Even though this is a cheap price, I would actually pay a bit more for a BayTrail device. (I have a Dell Venue Pro).

Didn't the OP say 'No need to comment about Atom processors not being fast enough?" :_)

      • -1

But my point is that the new BayTrail Atom processors are fast enough and actually offer a great user experience with Windows 8.1 unlike the older Atoms and their bad reputation. Just read any reviews on tablets with BayTrail or any benchmarks. I am really happy with the performance of my Dell Venue Pro.

Bay Trail is the one to get, but is there any tabs using Bay Trail for around $200?

        • $200, no. Sub $300 yes, but only 7-8" not 10". So might as well pay that little bit extra for the T100.

        • +3

No argument from me there in terms of better performance from the Bay Trail - and that should be expected from a newer generation processor. However, at the risk of getting in to a back and forth discussion, there is a fairly large proportion of tablet users who will never need this improved performance and just dont need to pay a premium for unemployed performance . I've had 2 different atom 2760 based W8 tablets and they perform without lag - playing hd video, office, tasks, multiple IE tabs, pdfs, antivirus and other apps. Cant see the t100 or other 10” 64gb W8.1 Bay Trail tablets going for under double this price anytime soon – no need to spend this coin unless you have intensive needs.

The T100 was $404 after pm @OW with a keyboard dock still seems to be a better value to me. Btw OP, what is the HD capacity for this tablet?

        • cheers wtfnodeal, thats a great price if you can get it. I'm sure the Vivotab is a 64gb model, but will check in the morning when my missus shares the password with me. Havent seen and 32gb Vivotabs except for the RT, models, but happy to be corrected on that.

        • +2

No doubt the T100 deal was an excellent deal, but that deal has long passed. For $200 this is the best 10" windows tab I've seen. If I was only budgeting $200 towards a tab, I wouldn't be looking at $400+ tabs anyways, and I'd hope if you were spending double the money you would be getting a significant improvement.

        • yes definately a 64 gb, will add to title

        • agreed, i love my T100, but if i had to choose between one T100 or two ME400c for the same price, i'd buy the latter, you can tweak it to run smoother, and re keyboard yes i would miss it but i already have around three wireless keyboards so that's a non issue

    • Thanks! I've been waiting for tablets to include the new CPUs. Seems they're not too far away now.

    • +2

i found my me400c runs quite smoothly with win8.1 in most apps.
but in 3D games it does lag. but still enough for daily tasks. e.g. emails, browsing, etc.

      • Would this play Ace Patrol and Hero Academy without lag?

  • Did it come with keyboard dock?

    • -3

Of course it doesn't come with keyboard dock.

        Never ass u me

    • +1

No,just tablet. Asked at Dick's and they said that they don't even have them on their database. Shame you cant pick up transleeve or transboard for a clearance price also.

      • +2

Well Centrecom have the leather Transleeve and keyboard for $50 + shipping or free for pickup at the Sunshine (Vic) store.

        http://www.centrecom.com.au/leather-case-with-keyboard-for-a…

        Good value IMO.

      • I'm pretty sure there is no dock available for these. Just matching BT keyboard.

      • I have a TF810c and family member has a w510, I have to say having a keyboard dock is kind of a big deal for me. The fact that you can replace your laptop, have amazing battery life on the road, use it without having to balance it with a Bt keyboard or your lap. Bigger deal for me than even having the extra 2 cores

        Great price though

  • Nice! Wonder if price is applied at DSE system wide so its scans & shows at my local?

    • well was in 2 wa stores, although only 55ks apart.

      • +2

I got it from a DSE a week back in Melbourne and it did scan as $199. Got another 10% off and got it for $179 as the box was out of shape and damaged. Lots of trouble to get it upto speed with Windows 8.1, out of box it was so horrid that I thought to return it. But windows 8.1, latest drivers, Bios updates, full reset to remove Asus bloatware(after upgrading to 8.1) and finally registry hacks made it smooth as butter. Took almost 3 days to set it up properly.

Brighton and Malvern has one display model left each. You should be able to get it for $179 or so. Worth a gamble.

        • When did you see the display models at Brighton and Malvern?

        • thx regenade for the info.

got the one from Brighton :)

  • bargain

  • I cannot see the receipt. When I click on the link it takes me back to this page.

    • how about this?

      • Thanks

I bought this when it first came out.. at $500. I had hoped to use it to write reports etc but eventually abandoned the idea as it was so tedious….anyway for $199 it is a good price. I rarely use it now…. go back to my ipad mini for web browsing, watching video etc..

    • If you were looking to sell yours at a fair price I would definitely be interested :)

  • +2

Windows 8 tablets might really take off if they give enough of them away.

  • The price is almost good enough to set one of these baby's up as a command center for all my IP cameras I have around the house. I can configure the Tablet to run either a flavor of Linux or keep Windows on it and have all the cameras displayed on the Tablet which I would mount up on the wall somehow and write data to my NAS share. I could even start to dabble with home automation since this runs full windows…hmmm….possibilities are endless !!

    • I heard Linux is difficult to get on uefi devices, has this been resolved with the latest version?

  • Any chance there's anyone here that's able to pick one up for me and post it to SA?
Preferably a white but happy with black

    • Why don't you call and organise it directly with DSE. Just pay over the phone $199 plus whatever shipping they are going to charge you.

      • They won't ship and only some stores store transfer (at my cost). The closest store is 280km from me. And they won't accept payment over the phone. I've tried and failed unfortunately

  • There were 3 left in stock in Adelaide. I got one from DS at Colonnades Centre this afternoon. They still have a black one in stock. Also at DS Golden Grove branch, there is a black display unit available. Anyone interested, can ring them 1st thing in the morning and ask them to put aside for you. They will hold it for 1 day.
