    Good find !!

    • US prices.. probably not so good now with our sinking dollar, but will update the post :)

      • +1

AUD has risen in the past few days

  • Thanks OP, awesome prices! But is there international warranty? or do we have to ship it back?

    • Ship back , amazon with take care of shipping both ways

      • cool! gotta get one then. So do we just claim the postage back from them after sending it back? (when it dies)?

        • They usually have some arrangement with a courier company. From memory you go to their site and generate a label to stick on the package, ring them and they pick it up. I didn't have to shell out anything last time.

        • thanks guys/gals! :)

        • +2

They usually have some arrangement with a courier company.

Negative. They ask you to mail it back. Then you email them the receipt and they refund you the postage cost.

        • Ah cool, my memory must be hazy - perhaps it was another company.

However, a couple of times, they said the item wasn't worth returning to them and I got to keep it for free! :D

        • +1

          same :D

        • Bought one! Thanks OP, eastern and Cuteseal! :)

        • Last time I had to return something I just posted it and they refunded the postage amount no questions asked :)

    • +3

Amazon are generally extremely good with returns and faulty products.
Usually the post out a replacement to you straight away, and give you instructions to ship the defective unit back free of charge. If they don't receive the return, then they bill you for the 2nd item.

  • can this be used on ps3?

    • +5

Yes most certainly. All SSD are under 9.5mm so can't see any being an issue.

For me personally it seems like a lot of coin to spend on a ps3.

    • +1

You're better off going for higher capacity 7200 rpm drive. Google around for SSD tests on PS3, the effect isn't really noticeable.

  • Dam this is a good price few months ago the 128 m4,s were around 130ish and still are on local sites for msata.

  • Is there any point of using ultra-modern SSDs on motherboards from say 2010 with old Marvell 9128 SATA6 controllers?

I mean they're still going to be fast but how much of a performance drop will I be seeing compared to more modern motherboards?

I put my old Intel 520 series 120GB in my HTPC which has a low-end 775 board in it. More than worth it.

  • sorry guys
my laptop 500GB SATA hdd just died and is out of warranty. Which one do I need to buy to replace my SATA drive? The mSATA or SATA

    thanks

    • +5

      replace it with SATA

mSATA is more for a boot drive. If you have a mSATA port in your laptop, better to get a 64GB as a boot drive and Use a SATA for data

    • +2

The difference between the two is the form factor. So it depends if you have a sata or msata drive

    • Your dead 500GB is in a 2.5" bay with a SATA interface. Some laptops have an mSATA slot in addition to the 2.5" bay, but many don't.

Replacing the HDD with a 2.5" SSD tends to be the safer option even if you have an mSATA slot. Ideally, you'd use mSATA for an SSD, leaving the 2.5" bay free for another drive. Problem is the mSATA slot is often completely undocumented, with little incentive for the laptop manufacturer to ensure compatibility with anything other than the dinky 16GB SSD caches they may offer as an option, and even the screws required for holding down the mSATA card aren't consistent between laptops.

    • (please delete this comment)

  • Crucial M500 240GB mSATA shows as $159 in AUD and that includes the shipping. This is actually a good bargain, especially considering it's mSATA. It's easily over $230 for similar SSD with mSata in Australia.

Regular SSD are not that cheaper than Australian stocks though.

  • would there be benefit to install msata for a desktop pc? (I already bought the sata BTW)…just curious

    • +1

nope. they use the same standards (SATA3) its just mSATA is designed for smaller systems (e.g. ultrabooks)

    • +2

mSATA is a small form factor mainly used in laptops and ultrabooks. Your desktop will already have SATA, the question as to weather it'll be able to make full use of an solid state disk (SSD), like the Crucial M500 SATA in this deal, is the SATA revision.

If your PC is 1-2 years old it'll almost certainly be SATA 3 (which is 6 Gbit/s) and will make full use of a SSD. If it's a little older it may be SATA 2 (3 Gbit/s) which will benefit from an SSD but not as much as SATA3. If your PC is really old it may be SATA 1 and the answer would be don't bother with a SSD. Hopefully that helps.

      • -1

thanks mate, mine is only 2mths old (i5 with gigabyte H87M mobo) so i guess it should be ok

        • +1

          Will definately work see here

          6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors supporting up to 6 SATA 6Gb/s devices

And you won't be able to use the mSATA. Consider getting a 3.5" bracket for it though, they're cheap on ebay, etc

        • thanks. Doh!! i thought it came with the 3.5' bracket! :(

      • Get a PCIE to Sata card if your PC is too old. Added SATA 3 to my old I5 setup.

    • SATA is like a 2.5" drive.

mSATA is like a 1.8" drive.

  • cool…phew… :)

  • +2

Why in the fudgesicle did the dollar have to be so weak on the day this deal came out?

  • +8

My blood is boiling! Two weeks ago I got the 240GB for $219 at PC Case Gear. Then I came across the new class-leading Samsung Evo release which wasn't yet or I didn't realise was available. So I just sold the Crucial for a huge loss at $152 on eBay, and bought the 250GB Evo from MSY for $229. Now I find out I could've got 480GB for the same amount I've ended up spending. GARRRRRRRR

    • +12

I'd be more pissed off about the fact that you most likely wouldn't have noticed a difference between the m500 and evo. Class leading or not, the noticeable difference is negligible.

      • This lol. That's hilarious.

      • It has about double the write speeds.

        • +4

Not really though. Real world you won't notice a difference unless your dealing with a lot of large files à la video editing. Definitely check staticice next time also!

        • So for double write speeds it would be better to run two ssds in RAID…

        • in a 1cm thick Ultrabook with one mSATA port?

    • Breath in…. and Out. Interesting that just 2 weeks ago the 240GB was selling at $219 and now it sells for $189 from PCCG

      • sorry, didn't mention that these are all mSATA's…

  • I'm tempted to get the 480GB for my Blade.

  • 240GB SATA has changed to $129.99.

    • And Delivery to Australia comes up as $36.54, for a grand total of AUD$187.08.

      • Interesting… Shipping is still the same for me, I'm in Melbourne. Are you sure amazon.com is the seller?

    • Thanks I've updated the title and post.

  • Can I use msata on sata port?

    • no

    • You can get an converter case off ebay for $11.85 if you want to convert MSATA to a 2.5" sata drive.

  • I grabbed of the 240GB MSATA drives :) Fantastic bargain !

A little bit OT but I thought this may be useful info.
When it comes to hardware I am a computer idiot (without the savant) but I did decide to buy an SSD from a previous OB poster. It arrived quickly and my brother and I decided to have a crack at installing it in my MacBook Pro, rather than pay someone to do it.
He was able to borrow a wrist band (to avoid static electricity) and the SSD came with a little screw driver. We bought a can of air, watched a vid on the net on how to do it and got to work.
Once I cloned the HD, we did the whole thing in 30 minutes, and that included double checking everything, twice, and spending five mins looking for a dropped screw. We installed the 9mm adapter that comes with the drive to make it fit and honestly, it was easy. And there appears to be a lot of installation vids on the net for other laptops (I have checked for versions of the lappys my sons have).
When I booted it, I was stunned. Boot time went from over 90s to to under 20s. Response is much faster; programs load in a flash (lol) and anything that has to write to a file runs way quicker.
Of course, I have adjusted to the speed now and I want more of it! But, if you have any doubts that installing is difficult, in my case anyway, it really isn't.

    • Good job… there are lots of videos on youtube and articles on the net these days - can't go wrong.

And yes, if you have a decent system, SSD's do make it fly!

  • Thanks, I gave it a think overnight to see if I really needed it and purchased one this morning.

The speed and zippyness will make up for it, especially for my older gen notebook - had to actually check to see if it supported SATA III. :)

  • Damn…i was trying to delay putting together an Intel Nuc HTPC now this is practically forcing me hand :(

    • LOL… exactly the same thing I just did. Was putting off spending the $$$ on an NUC but this pushed me over the edge.

      • Same here. Just need to find a decent price on the D54250WYK and an 8GB SODIMM.

        • Check out these,

          BOXDC3217BY

Umart has them for $199. The older model i3 version. Needs a Half length Mini-PCIE Wifi card though.

        • I'm really after an i5 mainly for the HD5000 graphics.

        • $459 on PCcasegear for the i5 HD5000 which isn't too bad considering it's $440 on Amazon.

        • The trouble with PCGC is the shipping costs to WA.

MWave have if for just 99c more, and they had free shipping a couple of days ago. But that ended just before this SSD deal hit. :(

        • For the Nuc and couple other items it's only $17 by normal parcel post to NSW which is good, i thought it would have been more…I haven't pulled the trigger yet though.

  • Free shipping for NZ now BTW.

  • Following the link for the 240GB comes up at $141 US, and We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order. .

The only ones shipping to AU are ~$140 US+ with shipping on top, what am I missing here, they're $180 in country, so doesn't seem a huge bargain for all the hassle of waiting for something to arrive broken from overseas…

    • +1

Just make sure you verify that Amazon.com is the seller. It is still showing those prices for me…

      • It might be, but if you put it in your basket you will find amazon.com do not ship to AU?
If you click on the "nn from sellers" at the bottom of the ad, it then shows you sellers with INTERNATIONAL and domestic shipping, and the only one I found that would ship to au was $60 for shipping!

        • I'm still getting the price as quoted by the OP. This is at the checkout stage.

What's the difference in performance between this Crucial M500 and Samsung 840 Pro?
Can I use mSATA on my laptop? (I notice the connector is different). Do I need an adaptor for it?

    • 1) Performance wise 840 pro is about as quick as it gets, m500 is nearer the bottom of the pile of recent sata III ssd's. You won't notice much, if any, difference in general use though. m500 will do a great job still and crucial have an excellent reputation with reliability and RMA processing if something does go wrong. Samsung likewise have a very good rep since their 830 series. If the prices were similar though, the 840 pro would be a no brainer, comes with 2 years more warranty also.

2)SATA will be supported, some laptops have mSATA ontop of SATA, check you laptops documentation.

  • Does it come with data migration software for Windows 7? I'd like to copy my C:\ over without reinstalling windows.

    • +1

Samsung have their Magician 'Data Migration' software, but unfortunately it only runs in Windows and doesn't let you copy objects that are currently in use, hence Windows system files, and you can't 'clone' the system drive with it. You'll have to find a third-party solution, perhaps Acronis Migrate Easy.

    • Acronis True Image Free Edition: http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119

It'll take care of all the configuration for you (unless you want to be picky) and yes it'll run from boot allowing you to clone your entire local drive to your new SSD without a hitch.

  • Thanks for posting this deal. I've been waiting for a SSD at the right price & size for my MBP.

  • Sweet~ a Crucial M500 240GB mSATA SSD upgrade for my laptop! :D

  • I love Amazon…already showing up as shipped :)

  • Just got confirmation mine has shipped. 12hr turnaround is pretty damn good :)

    • How you did that? For me choosing product from Amazon.com gives a 36 dollar shipping fee for fast delivery or 8 dollar one shipping fee with 2 weeks delivery. Tried order 480GB mSata. Prime free shipping is not available as Melbourne is outside US :) So expedited AmazonGlobal shipping is cheapest.

  • I am using a desktop. There's a mSATA slot on the motherboard (GA-Z77-D3H). I wonder if I could buy this one and use this a bootable disk? I heard that the mSATA slot on my motherboard can't be used to boot the system from it.

    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4140#…

  • my laptop is running a 120GB SSD.
just wondering if i'll get more storage if i get a msata ssd

is msata the slot where you normal install SIM modem onyour laptop?

    • get more storage if i get a msata ssd

      Storage capacity will be same.

is msata the slot where you normal install SIM modem onyour laptop?

No its different. I think you might be thinking of 'mini PCI-e' which is used for WiFi NIC, BT module, BDA DVB-T tuner, 3G/4G module etc.

      • mSATA is used for most 3G modems (Qualcomm GOBI & Ericsson)

  • +1

my lovely sony vaio told me that my hard drive is starting to fail and to back everything up. perfect timing. i will buy this and wait for failure before changing over to SSD.
    thanks

    • +3

A better idea would be to get rid if the failing drive as soon as your new one arrives. Why wait for your system to die, you will lose at least that days work and be inconvenienced when it happens. Swap it out.

  • According to Tom's Hardware, the m500 series have quite high idle power consumptions:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-m500-1tb-ssd,355…

Something to watch out for if you're planning to put one in a laptop.

  • Grabbed a 240GB SATA. Thanks :)

  • Msata seems to have gone up ever so slightly - was 159 yesterday, now 164.

  • msata expired…..

    • +1

mSATA is still available for purchase from Amazon at the lower price of $119.99. However, it now states: 'Usually ships within 2 to 4 weeks' which is fine by me. Ordered one:) Thanks OP

      • thanks, I'm more interested in the 480GB @ 80k IOPS & 400MB/s write

        too bad it's gone! :-(
but it means I saved about $300 :-)

      • Hopefully they ship before the 2 weeks.

  • MSATA Deal is still active - just bought one.
