The PROs are equal or cheaper at MSY.

      • -2

I'd sooner give $10 extra or whatever the difference may be to SE than anything to MSY ever again.

        • +2

yep true, the rep is always helpful and actively participates in deal posts

        • +26

I'd sooner give $10 extra or whatever the difference may be to SE

MSY is the reason we're fortunate enough to have such competitive prices. I'd sooner keep the $10 in my pocket.

        • +9

That kind of was 2 and a half years ago. And not all MSY branches are the same in terms of reputability. My local MSY rarely has queues, always picks up the phone, I've RMA'ed two products with them without issue and they've even refunded me money, no questions/proof asked, when my card was double-charged once.

        • I know it can and does differ enormously from store to store and that's something they really have to sort out. Same can be said about HN or even places like Sizzler, some are fine while others are appalling.

My experiences with them do date back to before the ACCC reaming, I can only hope they have improved although there is continuous chatter indicating that they may still be up to the same old tricks in some cases.

        • +5

yes, I went to my local MSY once to buy 1 item, I knew exactly what I wanted I didn't get it and I've never been back since.

There was 1 customer before me who wasn't buying anything and just chatted to the person serving about non-computer related stuff. There was a 2nd person serving who came to answer the phone when it rang then walked off without acknowledging me. I waited patiently for 20 minutes until they'd finished chatting, he looked at me then sat down to work on a computer he was fixing.

I walked out and since bought thousands of dollars of PC stuff elsewhere.

        • +4

You can say MSY basically "revolutionise" the PC market price in Australia in the past decade. It makes other PC components sellers be more competitive and MSY's prices are often used for comparison, despite all the "Soup Nazi" antic in the shop.

        • @Amar89; MSY call center picks up phone, but the local stores NEVER pick up phones. I heard they got punished by the managers if they dare to pick up the phones.

        • [wrong spot in thread]

        • +2

@Ozzy That's bordering on absurdity. Maybe they thought no one could be so patient so you must have been helped already??

      • +10

I wouldn't call SE good for after sales service. Had a laptop from them come DOA, submitted a ticket online which they didn't bother to respond to. Numerous calls later over a 4 week period and they finally responded 2 months after the sale that I should contact the manufacturer.

SE is good if your purchase doesn't have issues.

        • +1

Hrm if it was DOA then they should have definitely replaced it instead of directing you to the manufacturer, and there's no excuse for it taking 2 months.

Did you raise the issue with the rep here at all? I've had one problem, went via the rep here and got it sorted relatively quickly.

        • +1

I totally agree with SE after sales service it is dismal.

I bought the N54L server when they had a deal on. After a few days the PC would not boot up. Emailed SE and they advised I speak to HP before they could do anything.

SE does have good deals but in my opinion they need to improve on their after sales support.

        • +5

Sounds like they have an issue with small things such as obeying the law.

      • Haha! I must admit to a chuckle when you used "Shopping Express" and "Good customer service" in the same post.

    • +6

From the MSY PDF pricelist which they claim is updated every day:

      Samsung 840 PRO Series SATA3 128G / 256G / 512G 139 / 248 / 479

The 128 is the same, 256 is a dollar cheaper and the 512 is the same. This SE deal with free shipping seems better in every way - the item gets delivered to my door and I don't have to set foot in an MSY hovel.

      • +9

I went down to MSY Fyshwick today at around 1pm and picked up the Samsung 840 PRO 128GB for $139 and was waiting in line for about 10 minutes. No problems with customer service. They were polite and friendly.

Depends on personal preference. For me I would prefer to go into the MSY store because:
        a) I get it and can use it TODAY (in fact im using it now) and don't have to wait until at least Wednesday before it's delivered;

        b) I don't have to rely on a package that is sometimes being left at my front door and sometimes at the post office which is a pain in the ass to pick up as it only open business hours monday to friday; and

        c) any warranty issues can be sorted face to face including over the counter replacements

        • +1

          +1
MSY is improving now compare to few yrs ago. Had a CPU that is faulty. Bought it back and was given a replacement straight away. No question asked. Staff and store manager were very helpful. This is the Mitcham branch btw.

      • is free shipping reason enough to post a deal? I'm here for 50% offs or freebies.

        • +1

In most cases I'd say no, doesn't stop users and merchants posting deal after deal citing free shipping as the bargain though.

I don't know if it applies to this SE deal, but often with SE, if you add one free shipping item you also then get free shipping on other items and if they happen to be the cheapest at the time on whatever else it is you want, it can work out quite favourably.

        • +3

as a Tasmanian with no access to MSY etc, yes free shipping on a good price is relevant to me.
and ultimately, if it's not upvoted, the deal will never make the front page so members decide.
          Thanks OP.

        • +1

ultimately, if it's not upvoted, the deal will never make the front page so members decide.
          Thanks OP.

So… why didn't you upvote the deal?

        • Notwithstanding the apparent sarcasm, is there a reason everyone wants to quibble over the $1 cheaper Pro's at MSY, and ignore the great pricing on the EVO's which I'd reckon sell 5 for every 1 of the Pro's which Samsung sell?

          Great deal.

        • If free shipping saves say $10 on a $100-$200 purchase that's a 5% - 10% saving
That's a deal on these highly competitive current items
Most of the 50% off deals are for old stock etc
Don't get me wrong I have bought some super bargains and freebies here
Just cause it isn't a red hot bargain doesn't make it not a deal worth sharing IMO

  • I have a Acer Laptop and its hard drive died last week. It came with 256 GB SSD. Is this hard drive going to suit my laptop?

    • Yes. All laptops take 2.5" and that's the standard ssd size

      • +1

some only take mSata like my Samsung series 9, but its less common.

    • +1

Can't get it replaced under warranty? The SSD could have a longer warranty than the laptop does, may be worth looking into.

      • +1

Also, don't forget that under the updated consumer laws your right to repair/replacement may actually extend beyond the terms of both warranty periods.

        • +3

That's been the case for many years - the ACL did not change this.

        • +1

Good luck getting them repaired/replaced after the warranty periods though. I had a computer died 2 month after warranty and have not heard anything back after numerous emails and phone calls

    • If the laptop is under warranty, call the manufacturer and they will replace it for you

    • -8

No, Acer all laptops, regardless of size, use special a-drives that have a different attachment and require 3 hands to install using sonic screwdrivers. Replacing these drives requires a technician experienced with precocious or reflective Diapirism.

Please direct any other questions to the Department of Unspecific Vacuousness.

All laptops and hard drives are the same, exact replicas. No more detail is ever needed. mSata is a myth invented by fairies.

      • Wow, OzBargainers really don't get humour that isn't accompanied by a ba dum tish, eh? :O

  • for mac users, I installed the samsung evo 120gb in an optibay bay caddy as a second hard drive in the Macbook Pro 2010 and it works perfectly.

just bought another one today to install in the optical bay of my MSI GX620. The upgrade is worth every cent, the macbook was sluggish to the point I would despise using it, now it is my primary laptop due to its speed.

    • +2

isn't it kinda pointless to install these as 2nd hdd's? I thought the appeal of them was the fast load times?

      • If you work with anything intensive like video or massive images, you can improve things astronomically with SSD's.

Having an all SSD system would be heaven in most cases, just limited by space unless you splurge on a couple of larger capacity drives.

        • You can choose to use the new SSD in the optical drive as your boot disk in the Mac, or any laptop. Your old HD then becomes extra storage space. I have 370gb total in my macbook pro 2010 (120 sdd + 250 hdd)

        • should always put the original HDD in the optibay and SSD in the hdd slot as boot disk for

        • In Pre 2011 models Macbook Pro: both HDD/Optical bay are SATA II:

          http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1347247

can't use blanket rule for all models

        • if you meant for the MSI laptop, that is probably true cos the connection is ATAPI

        • +3

It is actually better to keep the HDD in the original bay as that bay has movement protection, shutting off the drive to protect it from being damaged, which isn't necessary for the SSD and would only slow the SSD down when your computer is moved.

  • why did all the SS EVOs' prices increased around Christmas?

      • +4

        Is your name ironic?

    • +7

because of our weak dollar. As stock numbers drop, stores have to buy at higher prices from importers.

  • What is the difference between the Evo and the Pro ?

    • -7

      One doesn't brush her teeth.

      • Bummer, I was hoping it would floss too. giggles (no pun intended!)

        • -4

looks like the feministas got in with their pink votes. Yawn.

        • More like you think you are funny, try being constructive for once

    • -1

      essentially
6 gigs extra storage on the pro and slightly faster random write speed

imo not really worth the extra money

      • imo not really worth the extra money

Thanks humdingaling, that was the bottom line I was after.

      • +1

Err, isn't the main reason that the pro's use more reliable tech? Something about Toggle NAND?

The tiny extra speed and storage don't matter, but for an SSD, a chance at better reliability can definitely be worthwhile.

  • RRP:$359 for EVO 250. seriously

    • +1

I think that's based on initial RRP (ie. when it first went to market)… It says 'was $189' so that's probably a lot closer to current average retail price.

  • Thanks champ !

  • +1

Wouldn't the customer service (for warranty) and price be better if purchased from Amazon!?

    • +1

I agree Amazon has amazing customer service but I think it's best to buy local if you can, at least you got the ACC to lean back on and don't have to worry about sending it back to US. (even if they do cover postage just time etc)

  • +1

ah dammit just bought a 128gb pro the other day for 155 , culdve gone for a 250 evo instead :L

  • +1

I think the difference between the Samsung 840 drives comes down to: 840 has slower write times than the 840 Evo & 840 Pro, and the 840 Pro has MLC memory which has about 3 times more write cycles than the cheaper TLC. If you are mainly using the drive to boost boot speeds and game loading times, the cheaper 840 would have been fine, but it is possibly discontinued now, so get the EVO instead.

  • Do they come with brackets? probably have to get one off Ebay, I purchased an m500 from SE 2-3 months ago, didn't come with a bracket, some cases come with brackets for SSD though,

I purchased this bracket for my SSD http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SSD-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Adapter-B…

would arrive before the SSD if ordered on same day, or you can just have the SSD resting in the case if you're a massive TA

    • thought the mounting components comes with your case not with the drive

dont recall ever seeing any drives come with mounting components (of late anyway)

    • Yep, my 840 pro was hanging loose by it's power and sata cable in my old case for a year or so. Lots of people stick them on with blue-tack, etc. No issues.

  • Just dropped one into my cart, via the link supplied & it shows $11 shipping?

    What's up?

    • It gives you a credit for the freight when you checkout.

      • I get to my Paypal & it's still there…I emailed them hours ago (when I posted here)- no reply.

Not going to risk having to fight for the money afterwards.

        Thanks though.

  • The 120 EVO appears to be out of stock

    • +1

Good news for consumers. The 250gb Evo has considerably better read and write speeds and double the effective lifespan of the 120gb Evo. Spend the extra $80 every day of the week…

  • I can't get free shipping ?
