Becks 500ml Fully Imported Beer 24-Can Slab $49.90 at Dan Murphy's [SA Only]

120

Was in Dan Murphys yesterday looking for the best cheap beer bargains on 500mL cans of Beer. Saw these were the cheapest ticketed at $56 for a carton (24). When scanned at the check-out they are actually $49.90 which is a full $10 cheaper than the equivalent Stella Artois or Heinekin 500mL cans. Fully imported from Germany and tastes great.

Becks is nicer than Oettinger and imo worth the $8.90 extra.

People think it is better, but cannot articulate why. I suspect it is all in the head - labels and price tags have more influence on perception than we admit.

Isn't Becks very similar? All German pilsners taste the same to me :)
(I would not say that about American so-called pilsners BTW!)

It can be difficult to explain why a particular taste is preferred over another, but I wouldn't put that down to something as simple as brand and price.

For me Oettinger can have an unfinished, somewhat dirty taste at times, and becks tastes fresher and more developed. I did say it was imo as taste is subjective.

Oettinger has a tart, bitter slap in your face from the Saaz hops used in brewing it. The taste is much more Brutal in comparison to Becks. I haven't ever had another Beer that I would mistake for Oettinger Pils. It's taste is very distinctive. Indecently, I read somewhere that Oettinger Pils outsells all other Beer in Germany. Which I found strange as I lived there for 4 years and I never heard of it, or saw it once.

My favorite German Pils was Veltins, but honorable mentions went to Warsteiner, Bitburger, Radeburger and Gold Ochsen (My local brewery).

Thankyou for that educated in-depth review.

I like Oettinger too. Just that these Becks slabs are usually $60.

Yeah I drink Oettinger from time to time because the price is unbeatable. But at $41 v s 50, then the Becks is the better buy IMO. A bit of change now and then isn't always a bad thing anyway…

    SA only?

    • It's showing this price on the webpage for me? Not sure what happens when you put a non-SA shop into it as "your Store" as I didn't try.

$56.99 for Becks in Sydney. That price remains right up to payment confirmation in cart.

    German beer isn't that great

    • +1

      Whats that supposed to mean?
Are you saying it is bad, or just not worth paying a premium over the local product?

      • Just not a fan of the taste compared to say Belgian or Czech beers.

        • what are you comparing with specifically in this price range? Stella? Budvar?
