    Mmmmmmmm doughnuts.

  • Great … I bought new tyres from Costco yesterday … :-(

    • +4

Don't worry, Costco's normal price (minus regular $70 discount) is better than this promotion. At least that's true for bobjane and jax I called.

      • True … I even have chosen a tyre which is not part of the promotion (nothing fancy … just the standard tyre for my RAV4) … with 70$ off (and of course the free Costco membership via AMEX way back) it was the best deal … :-).

They still told me I should do a wheel alignement (as Costco does not do this) … ahhh … more costs … (so maybe that would be included at BobJane or Jax?

        • +3

wheel alignment is in my experience always extra

        • Unless you know the someone there or you're getting majorly ripped off with the tires… it's extra.

It takes about 1/2 hour to do an alignment.

  • Used this promo to buy some RE001s last year, one of the perks of driving low mileage, can wait for something like this to pop up

  • +2

just the right time to get them…
Also FYI done some research,if anyone is looking for tyres
Potenza Adrenalin RE002— 139$each at BobJane,159$ at Bridgestone (can be price matched)
    T001 - 139$ at Bobjane, 159 $ at Bridgestone
got price matched at bridgestone went for T001
    thanks OP

    • +1

Thanks for the research, the sharing helps

Definitely worth pricing around. In my case with Ecopia's Bridgestone was $1 cheaper than Jax and $10 cheaper than Bob Jane.

    • +1

Might help if you actually indicate the sizes you've done research on.

      • +1

        size 215/60/R16

        • +1

          Size 195/60/15 $129 at Bridgestone

    • +1

Thanks, but may I know what size? My local bobjane told me $200 for RE002 225/50/R16, and I need to pay the disposal fee for the 4th tyre.

    • +1

Shopping around is crucial. I remember a few years back my local tyre shop said to me "look mate, shop around everywhere else then come back to me and I will beat whatever price you manage to get". There must be huge margins in tyres

      • +1

It becomes ridiculous, when these chain stores have their products online but the price tag is linked to a "get a quote" page.

If costco's normal price is comparable to this yearly "buy 3 get 1 free" deal, it means in 11 out of 12 months we are ripped off…..

        • +1

And then when you submit, they dont get back to you anyway.

        • If i'm not wrong Costco tires are parallel imported… thus the lower prices.

        • Not everything in Costco is imported by Costco.

I doubt the tyres would be. No different from all the electronics they sell. All have Aussie warranties.

      • Definitely. I buy Kumho tyres online from stgeorgetyres.com.au - $129 each, and every local store I checked wanted well over $200 each (Edit: $241 each at K-mart). So even taking into account delivery ($40) and fitting ($20 each), I was still hundreds of dollars better off!

        • +1

St George, along with Tempe, parallel import a lot of their stuff!!!
Ps. 1/2 of the Kumho patterns they sell are not even imported to Aus by Kumho!

        • …that's because St George/Taleb/Tempe are all related.

    • Can someone clarify?

So if I shop around for the cheapest price per tyre, would Bridgestone still price match for 3 and give the fourth one for free?

Reason why I ask is usually these deals are often linked to the RRP of the tyre price.

      Cheers.

  • I have RE92's on the VX & have done 50,000km on them, but not in sale list ,does anyone know a very similar tyre ?

  • Has anyone used the ecopia 150, if yes what were the negatives.

    • +2

      what were the negatives.

      They only come in black
      They only come in round
      No run flat option available

    • Not exactly the information you asked for, but I recently put Ecopia EP100 tyres on my car. I found they were quite different to "normal" tyres. My little car doesn't have power steering, but after changing to the Ecopias it is much easier to turn the steering wheel when the car is stationary, almost as though power steering had been installed! Doesn't seem to be any change to cornering or braking, a quite paradoxical effect.

And yes, my tyres were correctly inflated both before and after the change, so that wasn't a factor.

      • +1

Less grip/harder compound = less resistance = easier steering.

        • I know about the relationship between stopping distance, rubber hardness and life. However Ecopia tyres have silica added to the rubber, maybe they aren't hard compound?

Perhaps the added silica gives better wear characteristics and lower resistance, without the disadvantages of harder rubber?

        • Silica tread compound = longer wear = no loss of grip

        • +2

That's umm…. very 1990s of you to say.

Whilst yes, it does lower rolling resistance, it also causes early degradation of the tires. Therein comes the industry secret formulas that attempts to achieve the perfect balance with carbon black and other additives.

Everyone one uses some form of silica compound in their tires these days, even the cheap chinese manufacturers. So saying silica tread compound = longer wear = no loss of grip cause it's as good as saying I bought a LCD TV over a CRT (which no one manufacturers anymore) because it offers XXXX benefits.

          It's ancient tech mate.

  • +8

Would lean towards this deal if I didn't own a Reliant Robin!

  • Looking for cheap and long lasting tyres, any tips please?

    • IMO the longer a tyre lasts, the less effective they are. This is one area you shouldn't scrimp, its the only thing between you/your family and the road.

I went to a NRMA Business day a few Years ago, we did some side by side stopping tests with cheap chinese tyres vs good quality high performance ones, difference was absolutely huge (both tyres fitted to a Toyota Aurion)

      • Yeah but i am asking for cheap and long lasting tyres among these good quality tyres.

        • All cheap tyres are long lasting. There is no such thing as a good quality cheap tyre. Choose your wallet or risk your life - there is no way to have both

        • -2

Usually the "eco" and "fuel saver" tyres have a longer lasting tread compound, without giving away any wet/dry grip. They are usually a quieter running tyre as well due to their lower rolling resistance.

I haven't looked into the Ecopia range so I can't vouch for their performance, but I've been eyeing off the Kumho KH30 tyres due to their 100,000km tread life.

        • +2

Longer lasting tread compound, without giving away any wet/dry grip

Uhmmmmmm….. okay… if that's what you want to believe. But no, that's not how it works generally.

        • Well, I admit I'm not some big tyre guru. But Kumho in the US give a 100,000km tread life warranty on the KH30, so they obviously have some kind of faith in their product. And the user reviews I've googled are positive.

        • Let's put it this way. F1 cars on gripper compound change out their tires quicker than that of not so grippy wet tires. If there is some magical longer lasting tread compound that does not give away grip.. you won't see them changing the slicks so often.

        • Nothing like a bit of anecdotal evidence. At least I've read some reviews of people that have purchased these tyres and used them. You are just surmising from your own opinion. Nice.

        • +2

Stubborn lil fella arn't ya. LoL. Believe what you want. :)

        • +2

There's just no way to get through to some people. Especially when they're google experts. I just hope they don't drive anywhere near me

Wow, look at those crappy fuel saver tyres.

        • +1

A quote straight from your article:

low rolling resistance, combined with acceptable handling

I am the real fool here, trying to convince the google expert. zeomega gave up a long time ago. I'm now doing the same. Believe what you want :)

        • +2

22 years in the industry zeomega, and I have a permanent mark on my forehead from banging it against a wall responding to these posts!

        • +1

Who needs Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) these days when there's google?

LoL. Leave it to the google experts to tell you the "truth" rather than people with experience.

        • Yea you cant trust anything from the Internet - never know who you are dealing with… ;)

        • Cool. Thank you all for the input and comments. So can anyone here please let me know which is the cheapest and longest lasting among all on buy 3 get 1 free promo? Thanks!

        • -1

          @zeomega

that's a very simplistic way to look at it, wet and dry tires both have different tread designs (channelled vs slick) to cater for water dispersion and are also designed to work at different operating temperatures

the reduction in grip between a wet vs dry tire is typically because of the reduction in contact area with the track surface (all things being equal, however due to the reduced track temperature they also opt for a different type of compound to work within the optimal temperature range)

the standard road car tire will use a compromised tread compound so it operates in a wide variety of conditions (without having to get the tires up to temperature so they work) and is usually good for x number of years / x number of kms
contrast this to a r compound tire and your looking at x number of heat cycles rather than km as to how useful/grippy the tire will be

take a standard road car tire on the track and a couple of laps will render a brand new set useless due to the extreme heat being generated (as this is typically outside the temperate range the tire was intended for)

        • Wow that's a lot of information you just speeled, all of which everybody knows already and has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion of long life vs grip. Your comments are completely off the mark of the above conversation. Thanks anyway

        • @apate

the comment was in response to zeomega's comparison to f1 tires of which there is no real world comparison

but agreed off-topic from the original question

        • My bad. I should have said Hard compound vs Soft compound rather than wet vs dry. But that said, the wet tire will not use the same compound as soft due to inability to get heat into them, thus the point still stands indirectly.

Yeah yeah.. grooves bla bla bla. Try out 595 RSR vs RS3 (both having a 140 TWR) and RS3 having the more water channels, but it still does not handle as well in the wet but better in the dry. I've been through sets of them for daily driving off different cars, turbo and NA.

Yes. I know all about the heat cycles etc I've been through multiple slicks from different brands… but do you think he would or will care? Of course i'm taking a simplistic approach to it. There is no use to explain heat cycles to someone buying street tires. Again, you're pulling this off topic.

Lastly, you'll be surprised what you can do with a standard road car tires on a track :)

  • +1

I got Turanza ER300 and last for around 70,000 kms. Good handling and long lasting.

  • +2

Kmart Tyre & Auto now has fixed prices online. For example, the are very slightly cheaper on the 215/60/16 ones at Bob Jane mentioned above:
    www.ktas.com.au/tyres/dimensions/21560R16/

  • This deal is perfect for getting my fleet of 3 unicycles back on the road, with a spare in case one of them get a flat!

  • Some decent tyres included in the promo but I don't think the price is that cheap. In the past when the AUD was stronger, I used to order from tirerack in the US to get high performance tyres.

  • Just so happens I just got told that I need 4 new tyres… thanks OP!

  • Could I not get price from Costco the. Get one of the participating stores to match it and then get a free 4th tyre?

    • +3

As mentioned above Costco tyres are imports so local tyre shops won't price match. Just like they won't match Tempe Tyres prices (which are either parallel import or off the back of a truck, depending on how much you pay them)

      • Oh did not know that. But they will match kmart tyres right? The price seems fairly similar to costcos…

  • +1

Great timing as I need 4 new tyres for my Honda Euro. Looking at the Adrenalin 205/55R16 anyone know what price I should be aiming for?

  • Just my 2c.

My car came with 195/65R15 and these typically sell for $135-$180 range for a Michelin.

I changed to a 205/65R15 and due to it being a more common tyre size (i think Camry, older Falcons and Commodores) the price for the Bridgestone EP100 was $98 at Costco today. I bought 4 and saved another $70 (with lifetime Nitrogen, rotation, balance and puncture repair) Final Cost was $322.

At the local Bridgestone store they said the same tyre is on special for $105 each and told me the Buy 3 get the 4th Free started today. Cost would have been $315 with the Promo.

The Buy 3 get the 4th free is great for those wanting a any of the more expensive Bridgestone Tyres

    • +1

you do realize that you have increased your overall wheel diameter by 12mm? Which would then mean when your speedo is displaying 60kmh, you are actually travelling 61.1kmh … just saying.

      • +1

you are right about the speedo changing.

However Australian delivered cars can have their Speedo (by law) upto 10% out. (see http://www.trafficlaw.com.au/speedos.html )

ie. If your speedo is showing 60km/h, you are more than likely doing 55-56.
Same for when its showing 110km/h, you are probably travelling at 103 etc etc.

So this diameter increase actually brings it closer to the true reading.

        Differences between Wheel/Tyre 1(195/65/15) & 2 (205/65/15)
        Rolling Radius 6.5mm
        Circumference 40.84mm
        Diameter 13mm
When your speedo reads 100km/hr you're actually at 102.01 km/hr

Essentially I will be 2% closer to the true speed.

        http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Tyres/SizeCalc.aspx

        • Nice points, but the 10% out reading can also mean 10% faster

          From your own link

          >A speedo over-reads if it displays 100kmh when the vehicle's actual speed is 90kmh.
          >A speedo under-reads if it displays 100kmh when the vehicle's actual speed is 110kmh.

So with your tyres you could be making things worse.

The morale for everyone is to use a GPS to find out what your correct speed is no matter what tyre size you put on.

And then putting on a more attractively priced tyre would be fine.

BTW thanks for the tip, I take the same tyre size on my Corolla, the only thing is I'll have to wait 60-70K's to take advantage of it.

        • It could mean 10% faster, but the vehicle manufacturers opted for the 10% on the lower side to avoid litigation that all speeding motorists would blame the Speedo for showing over the actual speed.

Grab your smart phone and download "trapster" as it has a Speedo display using the US satalite and cruise on 100km/h on your car speedo then have your passenger read your the speed. You will find that its 5-10km/h less.

Cops often used this to their advantage too! They would ask you , how fast were you going and if you were telling them what was on your Speedo, then your were confessing to (upto 10% more than) you were actually doing!

        • +2

Nice points, but the 10% out reading can also mean 10% faster

Unfortunately incorrect. New Australian standards simply state that the speedo of a new vehicle must be of a reading lower to what the vehicle is actually traveling! It could be 2% lower, it could be 10%. Depends on the vehicle manufacturer! And it can vary across the same car in different spec levels too. Dealers may change the wheel and tyre combination altering the OD without re calibrating the speedo because they know that they're still within specs!

You also realize that a passenger car tyre has approx 8mm of tread. Meaning it can wear down to the canvas and be 16mm smaller in overall diameter than what it started its life at! So the 12mm increase is pretty much negligible!

And being technical it's theoretically 13mm. 10mm wider at 65% sidewall is 6.5mm, times by 2 sidewalls in the OD is 13mm! ;)

        • Just supporting what Snoop said.

In aussie the speedo will never read true and will always be lower.

Reading off directly from my car's speed sensor indicates a true reading vs GPS where the speedo does not. Source: I'm an Engineer.

If you still don't believe it: ADR 18/03
          http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2006L01392

        • That is true the ADR 18/03 says it's for owners of cars since 2006, some ozbargainers can have cars before 2006

But I also was refering to the post by GLO where he made reference to

          (see http://www.trafficlaw.com.au/speedos.html

at which site they make the "offending" statement, which he didn't quote, taht being the 10% can be above as well. If its incorrect then calling it out, has helped.

But my real point was that you need to check your own speedo with a GPS to be sure of what your speedo error is, rather than assume

Just like many of the writers to the newspapers tell us that people are speeding on the freeway as when they are driving at 100 cars are passing them,. Now if their speedo is out 10% the "speeders" might well be within the speed limit.

        • Spot on. My car is only 1-2kmh out at 100, so I generally sit on 103-105ish. Whereas the Mrs car is 7kmh out so I know I can sit on 107!

        • Doesn't make a difference.. still 100KM/hr :P

But it's a nice feeling thinking you're going at 107 instead of 103 eh? lol

        • I know, but was referring to above about the speeds cars do on a freeway, and I guess it's the major reason a lot of people sit on 90-95… and I'm sitting up their ass wanting them to move over! ;)

        • +1

And sorry RockyRaccoon, I read back over your post and you are indeed correct in what you are saying! Speedos used to be up to 10% out… either way! One of the major reasons people got shitty in Vic with this 3kmh or 3% ruling!
I remember quite well getting pulled over in NSW once and the cop there actually stated he doesn't know how we tolerate this law in Vic or how they can legally enforce it based on the ADRs (at the time)!
But unfortunately negligence or ignorance can't be used in your defence!

        • No problem, being from NSW so I can be more "tolerant"… :)

          BTW

sitting up their ass wanting them to move over! ;)

I paused to wonder if this is the reason why last night on that most "informative" show Current Affair advertising in-car cameras, they quoted that Victorians have more rear end accidents than other states….

  • The Potenzas are tempting but I think I will stick with the Toyo Teo Plus for my Accord Euro

  • +1

How do you ensure such perfect timing to require 4 new tyres?
Everytime I've needed new tyres in the past it's only been one or two at the most. Do you just keep running them bare until all need changing?

    • +1

      Rotation every 5000km.

This will give you the best life (with the right tyre pressure) and give you the 4 tyre replacement at the same time!

The real trick is timing it up with a promotion!

    • +1

if you need 1 out of 2 fronts or rears when replaced from new.. chances are you need an alignment or a suspension geometry check. uneven wear left to right usually is not a good sign.

Id recommend for safety to always replace tires in a pair at the very least.

    • If there's a pair with couple of k km's tread life left, take it home as there's always someone on Gumtree etc needing a pair of rego tyres to get through RWC/pink slip…

      • rego tyres

        Now there's a novel concept!

  • remember this is valid to the 12/04/14 so you still have a month to wear out your current tyres! (will be good timing for me)

  • Great post. Was about to change my rear tyres but got 4 protenza 225/45r/17 with wheel alignment for $750.

    • Those protenzas are awesome

      • Mine are 215/45/r17, do you think it'd be any cheaper? Bridgestone hasn't gotten back to me yet after 3 working days, and isn't 750$ for 4 too expensive? I'm looking at the RE002

        • +1

kmart sells the re002 215/45/r17 for $181 each but I don't think they're part of the 1 free deal.

Jax does the 235/45R17 for $189 so 4 for $567 is quite good.

I'm getting some quotes on monday for the 215

        • Keep me posted :) thanks!!!!!!

  • Just recently bought tyres from http://www.ozzytyres.com.au/ (still waiting to be delivered). Maybe we can use this promotion too :)

  • What are their best performance tyres?? I need 245/40/18 for my Evo. I got quoted $600ea for a replacement of the Michelins PP2s on my car

    • +1

in that size probably only the S0001, the RE070 is what you want but IDK if it's available here.

  • Has anybody Tracked the S001 ? any reviews ?

  • 4 x RE002 215/45/R17 for $561 total, thanks OP!

    • Bridgestone store?

      • +1

asked them but no answer, this price is from jax

        • Price inclusive fitting, tyres disposal etc?

        • +1

          yesm, 561 is everything

  • Anyone in Brisbane area interested in going halves (ie. 2 tyres each) in a set Potenza RE002 - 235/45 R17 ? Bridgestone Milton has quoted $175 each ie. $525 for 4 = $131.25 each !
