Lenovo B590 (i3-3110M/4GB/500GB/15.6") - $499 @ MSY

70

Lenovo B590 $499 at MSY. Lenovo is selling the same laptop on their site for $649. Plus the MSY model comes with Windows 7 not windows 8. A good laptop for the price and specs.

    Cheap.

35W TDP. If you are going to be taxing this chip while on battery, this thing will sip (slurp?) those watts though.

Windows 7 is a nice(r) touch than Lenovo's offerings on their website (IMO).

    • I agree, I dont know why people would opt for windows 8 unless they buy a touch screen laptop. Other then that there is not need for windows 8.

Nothing wrong with Win 8. It boots faster than 7, is easier on the RAM and GPU since it lacks the Aero interface, and has less security holes than 7. Win 8 is also more optimised for UEFI, which cuts down boot times.

If you can't stand the Modern UI (neither can I) you can just use a classic start replacement which instantly remedies the only glaring flaw in Win 8. Every other aspect of it is positive.

Nice one scrimshaw- you're not selling anything but your experience, and providing succinct, rational and (presumably) impartial advice. The Win7/Win8 arguments hadn't been whittled down clearly enough for mine, so, yet again, the true value of ozbargain is the access to specific product knowledge via the comments.

Thank you for your insightful analysis scrimshaw :)

Agree completely with this post. I absolutely loath the "metro" UI, but a simple free program like Classic Shell can remedy this and from there it is simply much faster than windows 7, in my experience.

I would take windows 8 any time with a new machine now. That said, windows 7 will likely be te new "corporate" choice with xp being phased out.

Agree as well. There's still a few things that annoy me about Windows 8 but I'll put up with them for the extra speed.

I'd never buy a Lenovo though.

          Whats wrong with Lenovo?

        • +1

EXACTLY. Lenovo's are really good computers they look ugly but are really good they are built to last. They are not built with cheap materials. I think just the look of them throws people off.

      • +1

Win 8.1 allows you to boot straight to desktop.

      • Yes there is, Win8 is much faster for all measurements from a HDD.

  • $40 cheaper than the next cheapest on static ice (http://www.diycomputers.com.au/product.asp?id=13017)

    • That one has windows 8

  • ..mod delete..

    • Yeh buts its Acer. Who wants to be seen with one of those in public at least get dell or HP.

I don't think Uni students or Suzy Chapstick will really give a toss; and HP consistently rank as having the highest failure rate of laptops.

But yes arbitrary social standards are so much more relevant, do continue.

        • Its funny cause it true, unless you're socially awkward. I'm just saying how it is, people will judge whether you have macbook or Acer. Not saying it's right its just the way life is, prejudice is everywhere.

Just a pro-tip for you there George Carlin, when you have to point out that something's funny, it's not.

Ask me how much I care that people (read: pony-tailed neckbeards and flamboyant Asians) will be prejudiced to my brand of laptop.

Not saying it's right its just the way life is, prejudice is everywhere.

          Deep.

It's hard to believe someone is talking this seriously about laptop brands and social connotations.

Hello. I'm Tony from Acer Australia.
I would like to do a survey about your perceptions on the Acer brand. Can I have a few moments of your time?

(of course I'm only kidding but I think that Acer are probably the only ones who would (or should) care about how their brand is perceived in your age group).
