  • Is this another Coles 'Home Brand' ?

    • Its not mentioned anywhere.

    • +4

      yes. Castrol makes this

      • Castrol, as in the petroleum company? I see what's going on here…

  • Which Coles? The left or the right one or both?

    • Right one, without the liquorland.

Why are there 2 Coles ?

        • There used to be 2 near me because one was a Bi-Lo. Same like Knox City, there are 2 Coles and no Woolies because one was a Bi-Lo from memory.

        • Thats just how it is, one on the left and one on the right. One without liquorland and one with.

        • Thats just how it is,

          No competition = higher prices.

        • There is a woolworths 5 mins drive from there, not just there but competition is there.

      • Liquorland

    • The middle one?

Most canola oil is hydrogenated vegetable oil, which means trans fats, which means oxidation. Given that this is Coles brand, I doubt that this is the rare exception.
I wouldn't go near it with a ten metre pole, no matter how cheap.

    • I read somewhere regarding canola oil, not sure if they are true, maybe someone can enlightened me.
Canola oil= Canadian Oil is from GMO rapeseed. The plant is originally toxic, even animal won't eat it.
I used Canola oil before but after reading that, i am not sure now.

      • Canala oil is based on rapeseed, altered either through hybridisation or genetic modification. It's never labelled if the oil is extracted from a GM plant, as the rationale is that the oil doesn't contain any genetic material.

Rapeseed oil from rapeseed has been a traditional oil used in a number of Asian countries, but is high in erucic acid. This fatty acid was associated with fibrotic heart lesions (Keshan's disease), so the goal was to make an oil with a lower proportion - i.e. what is now known as canola oil. I can't comment on whether or not animals would eat the original plant.

As you say, the name "Canola" just means Canadian oil, a marketing term because calling it "Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed" (LEAR) really didn't take off.

      • canola oil gets a bad rap. Why? According to the US-based Mayo Clinic there's a common misperception that canola oil is made from the rapeseed plant, which contains erucic acid, high levels of which are toxic to humans. While the canola plant was developed through crossbreeding with the rapeseed plant, canola oil contains less than 2 percent of erucic acid. Nothing to worry about.

        • There is some evidence that even the low levels of erucic acid can be harmful, but that's mainly from animal studies.

Personally I think canola is safe enough as long as someone is having saturated fat in their diet, but I wouldn't go out of my way to use it.

    • What would you suggest using as an alternative? Peanut or rice oil?

Genuine question, coz I was going to buy this stuff but now perhaps not.

I use extra virgin olive oil from Cobram Estate (one of the best olive oils in Australia according to Choice magazine) for light cooking and salads. One good thing about the oil is that the harvest year is listed, so you know how fresh the oil is. The freshness of extra virgin olive oil is the most important factor. Olive oils from Italy can be a mixed bag: sometimes falsely labelled (processed instead of extra virgin), and often rancid. Cobram Estate tends to be less expensive than other brands in the supermarket.

For cooking at higher temperatures, I use coconut oil - as it's one of the most stable and beneficial to health. You will occasionally find negative studies which purport to show that coconut oil is unhealthy, but invariably the coconut oil they study is one that has been hydrogenated as part of the study design. This means all they are showing is that artificially hydrogenated oils of any kind are unhealthy. The cheapest I've found for virgin organic coconut oil: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121084624914

          Good call on the Coconut oil, though if you are a fan then how does this pricing compare with what you find on eBay?;

What an excellent post (and response thanks!) - Ozbargain needs a super +5 option which can only be used once a week or so, for awesome efforts like that one.

I knew next to nothing about coconut oil, but this sounds worth trying as my main use for oil is the higher temp cooking application, I like my salads without any dressing. I actually do have a 4L Cobram Estate virgin olive oil from a special quite some time ago and due to the above I still have heaps of it, it was one of those "oh bargain, must buy!" moments. It does seem nice however.

I am interested on your take on the jebozb's question, the only difference I notice (which doesn't say much really) is 3 x 1L bottles would be easier to handle and use than a giant 5L tub. But prices look good either way.

Nice find; the goodness.com.au oil is more expensive to me due to the freight ($17.26), but you'd save money if you were in Sydney metro.

What are the containers like, easy to get the coconut oil out in Winter when it's solid?

And a lot of vegetable oil is or has a lot of unsustainable sourced palm oil.

Palm oil plantations = genocide of Orangutans and Tigers. :( Shop wisely.

      • +1

Agreed. Avoid "vegetable" and "Palm" oil products where possible to help avoid us wiping out Orangutans and Tigers in the wild.

      • +1

Absolutely right, plus not only orangutans and tigers, but entire rain forest habitats, that includes diverse variety of plants, insects, small animals, reptillians and birds. Not to mention the smokes generated from burning the fields. Palm oil = Death oil.

        • nevermind

          (ditto basically)

    • If canola oil was hydrogenated, then it'd be solid at higher temperatures like butter and coconut oil, as the process would raise the melting point. That would only be done to make the oil more solid in things like processed foods and margarine.

You're confusing it with the deodorisation process, which reduces the omega 3 content in order to prolong shelf life (stops the oil going rancid) - but which does produce trans fatty acids as a consequence.

There are some studies showing canola oil promotes vitamin E deficiency, and the erucic acid in canola oils and rapeseed oils have long been associated with Keshen's disease (fibrotic heart lesions). I've read of animal studies which showed retarded growth and shortened lives when the primary oil in the diet was canola.
