  • I would love this, but there's no sensible plan for a person with 2 computers. The family plan is too expensive and too expansive for me. Nonetheless, good deal for what it's worth.

    • You can use the free crashplan app or any other backup program to backup mulitple PC's to just one other PC, then subscribe just that one PC which holds the backups.

This is what I do for muliple PC's.

I have over 4TB on Crashplan.

  • +2

When I tried them out I repeatedly found random files (sometimes whole directories) missing in my test-restores. The file names and sizes were shown as backed up, but trying to restore them drew a blank. No error message in the log, just files missing.

Support could not explain or fix it. I took up their refund offer and am back to using portable drives for backup.

If you rely on Crashplan for anything important I suggest you try a backup/restore/compare cycle yourself to see if that problem still exists.

    • wow, good call. I was with them for a year and never got around to testing it.

    • While it is good to have portable drives for back-ups (I personally do) keep in mind that if you have all of your data on-site (i.e. in your home) and you have a flood or a fire or get robbed and those drives are gone you will lose everything.

Having an off-site plan is always wise. Even if you just store a drive at a friend or family members house.

      • +1

Notwithstanding it's kinda frustrating being in the position of suggesting to family/friends who are largely indifferent to the whole backup thing, and have required a lot of prodding to finally invest in and set up their first backup drive, that this isn't enough - they should also maintain another backup remotely.

Wonder how diligent techies who already maintain multiple levels of backup would respond to being told they're not doing enough - they should also be protecting against silent corruption through the use of more robust file systems, for reasons explained here :D

    • I just started using CrashPlan at home 2 months ago. I haven't checked the backups yet, but will do after reading this.

  • Note: This appears to work for existing subscribers too.

Can't seem to get the 20% off for renewals as suggested.

If you have access to a VPN or US proxy you can get it for US$48 for one year

This is true, but unless you run the VPN permanently they will migrate you to the Australian server, and come renewal time need to pay the ripoff AU$ prices.
