So what would be best paired with this for an actual modem? Buying a great wifi router like this will be kind of pointless if my ADSL2 connection is flaky.
Only when streaming or downloading from the net. Streaming between devices on your network is what this router is about.
E.g. From your PC or NAS to a media player.

The premium you are paying for is for the newest wifi tech. In alot of cases powerline would be a better alternative even in a house with poor wiring. Besides that most of the other features can be had in a router for under $100 (performance aside).
For a little less than this price, you can get a very highly-regarded and capable, modem-router with VOIP/SSL VPN/3GLTE support; the Billion 7800VDPX (if Wireless AC is not a massive need).
