not the biggest fan of this smartwatch, what's with those little android buttons. this one attempts to pretty much mimic an android phone I feel rather than enhancing the smartphone experience. Galaxy Gear (albeit price) and Pebble are better implementations imo. Although still long way to go, batt life probably the bigges thing - "oh no now my watch has run out of batts…"

    • Gear battery lasts a day only.

      This last 3 or 4.

Pebble a week but it's an e-ink screen.

      • Gear has lasted me 4 to 6 days after the first firmware update.

        • +1

Smartwatch 2 never lasted me 3 or 4 days battery. 2 days tops and the watch fell apart in a little over a week. It's a PoS and has known build quality problems (basically is a small device glued to a metal watch strap, gets hot, glue comes away) Steer clear people.

        • How many phones does the Galaxy Gear support again? When it launched it only supported the Note 3.

Unless you're rocking one of those, this thing which costs double the price isn't going to do much for you. Just a small consideration perhaps.

        • Any phone with BT4.0 of you mod it. Otherwise I'll think its just Galaxy S4, Note 3 and possibly Note 2 and S3?

    • I own and think this is best balanced smartwatch on the market right now. The touch screen interface is faster than the pebble because it doesn't rely on button long presses or constant clicking to scroll down a list. The gear completely fails the mark because the screen isn't always on for the time and the battery is much too short. This is quick to get what you want and controls are consistent, if all else fails you at least have a watch that tells the time as it should.

There will be better smartwatches on the horizon, but this is a good start.

      • fair enough points on battery life, wasn't aware of gear screen issue. But my gripe is with the purpose of a smartwatch

There are tiny little android buttons and a pull down notification bar on such a small screen? Seems like it's trying to be a half hearted attempt at an android phone on your arm. Gear looks like it uses more intuitive gesture controls and the UI just looks a lot more polished.

On that note, I'm not even sure if the purpose of a smartwatch is to really tell the time, more for notification and smartphone extension. Still, here's always gonna be a compromise, the Gear has 275 ppi - resolution on the Sony is significantly less. So I mean idealy I don't really want to be charging the thing every day, but personally I don't mind if it doesn't constantly tell the time - if i wanted that then I'd just go with a traditional watch.

But I agree, the market is still maturing. Though I feel eyewear tech (google glass etc) has a bit more potential in the smartphone extension field.

        • I think a Smartwatch needing to tell the time is quite important. I think the purpose of a Smartwatch is to become so intuitive, you no longer think it's a piece of tech. The screen on the Sony isn't high quality, but it's transflective, meaning it's legible in the sun without any backlight, like those desk calculators. Having an always on screen means you can have your updates or controls always displayed on the device. Personally I find this very useful when I plug my phone into my car stereo, I can control and monitor my music without needing to dig around the menus again.

Depends on what you want on a smartwatch, some people want hardcore features that can replace their phone. Personally I was just looking for a discrete device that's a window to my phone.

      • The gear is way ahead of this, the screen not being on is a non issue as when you raise your arm to see the time the built in gyro triggers the screen. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the SW2 in every way (see my post above for serious and well documented SW2 issues as widely reported on XDA) As someone who has owned both I'm just trying to give an honest opinion here, no hearsay at all.

        • Most of the complaints on XDA are before the big December software update and of the first batch build quality. I only bought the watch 1.5months ago, with the new firwamre pre-installed so I know of none of those issues.

Australia only got the watch now-ish for a reason.

        • It's also leaps and bounds more expensive.

        • +1

It is more expensive but you are paying for some pretty cool tech and a great build quality.

        • I believe the Gear can tell you about about text messages you've received, but it can't display them on the screen… pretty lame for a $300 toy.

Worst of all, for that price it only supports like 2 phones. The Sony supports anything running 4.0+.

It looks nice, and the build quality is good, but it comes at a high price. It all depends on what your needs and budgets are. I still think it's immature tech, and I'll wait for a Moto 360.

      • Thanks for this, opted to preorder the gear 2 instead, looks really good !

  • I have a Galaxy Gear and having no buttons makes interacting with the watch screen feel quite natural

Adding capacitive buttons to a smart watch is a pretty bland piece of engineering I think

I think we still have to hit that sweet spot that we hit with smart phones, come one Apple…..

  • They up the price to usd 145+ postage now….

  • +1

My smart watch 2 is in for it's second repairs in 5 months. Both times just failed for no reason. Seems to be bad internals or bad software. Still waiting to get it back from repairs. Probably a total of 2 months without a working watch.
But all this being said, I think it's a great watch when it works. Does enough as I never expected it to replace my phone. I'll still look at replacing it when the new Motorola 360 is released though.

    • Can't wait for that watch. Only problem is it requires Android 4.3 phone to pair with. I got two phones that are 4.2.x.

      Bah.
