This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

        Sleeping Duck have now updated their terms and conditions (in the link above) to say that referrals through OzBargain are not valid. I checked recently and my SleepingDuck referral code has been clicked over 200 times, but I’ve never got any rewards from SD. I clicked my own link and found that they have marked the code as invalid. I ran into this same issue when I was trying to use other people’s SD referrals from OzB, they were all marked as invalid. Maybe the SD referrals should be removed?

          We've switched the system to PM (notified all users) as to not expose the links. They also have a cap on how many people you can refer so by using PM, the referrer should check to see if their code is valid.

      Ideally people should ask about setting up the referral system here rather than creating a wiki page, as our plan for this year includes phrasing out all the referral wiki pages as they are way too problematic.

    Is it possible to add Car Next Door ? When customers join they'll get $15 Car Next Door credit to borrow cars and $15 if they also elect to share their car. Once they take a trip, the referrer gets $15 Car Next Door credit. If the new members shares their car within 30 days of signing up, referrer gets $15 cash credit to CND account.

    Referral System Update February 2017

    Many of you here have probably seen the revamped List of Referral Codes wiki page, which lists out all the automated referrals that we have — and there are over 100 of them! Over the past month I have also been migrating some of the referral wiki pages to automated system, so do not be alarmed when some of your referral links / codes are missing — check whether they have been migrated to the automated/randomised system.

    Other changes:

    • A store / domain can now have multiple referral systems. For example you can see randomised coupon codes for multiple products on ArtsCow page.

    • A referral link can now have multiple parameters. See referrals for Dollar Shave Club and winedirect

    My next task would be migrating the huge FUBAR known as American Express referral wiki over to the automated system. It's a massive PITA for the moderators when people add/remove their links which can sometimes stuff up the entire page.

    American Express Referrals Migrated

    I have created the products and the referral settings for them. Please see here for the list of American Express referrals.

    I have also attempted to migrate the referrals from the old wiki to it. However

    • Many links are in the old format (https://www316.americanexpress.com/iFormsSecure/... rather than http://amex.com.au/refer/...). So only the new format are moved.
    • Some users actually do not exist
    • Some users also have duplicated referral links that got picked up by the system (dodgy individuals changing other people's links to theirs)

    For now, I am setting all the Amex referrals to expire after 180 days so you'll have to put yours back in afterwards, to hopefully remove non-working links. Please do go to your referral settings page and check whether your referral links are correct.

        I am leaving it as it is for 2 weeks. All referral links on the wiki will be removed in mid-March.

          This issue is that not all the referral links are able to be generated in the new format. Under the old programme you could generate a link for any type of card but the new referral page only allows you to generate for the card that you currently hold. The old links still work so not sure if there is a way to keep the old format links?

          @Holysmoke: no. Moving forward it's new format only. There were too many issues with wiki pages and we are at the point saying that we will not make it work if your referral links are not of required format.

          @Holysmoke: the two links aren't compatible, and currently from within the app and in the website you only get the new format. People should always check whether their referral links have been migrated and update if there's any change.

      We don't normally add referral for stores that don't have deals on OzBargain — that shows most people aren't interested in it.

    Can we get Sparesbox added?
    They sent out an email campaign titled Earn $10 for Every Friend you Refer to Sparesbox!
    Referrer gets a $10 voucher and referee gets a $10 discount.
    It's convoluted to get a referral code as the email takes you to a page to enter your name/email (you don't have to be an existing customer to refer others). https://www.sparesbox.com.au/refer/refer-a-friend-parts/

    That takes you to a page where you can enter friends email addresses or post to FB/twitter. Click the twitter button (it should preview without posting) and it has a goo.gl short url (add a + to the end of the url to see where it goes to) which points to your referral link.       Here's the existing wiki. We are considering moving to the randomised system. I wonder why we have created it in the first place where people use PM to get the referral links? Don't want to show the link (which contains name) in public?

        I actually searched PowerShop in the referral section and couldn't find it, hence the request, i didn't know the wiki existed. I understand that some people might have the full name in the referral link which why they would ask people to PM. The randomised system works well and is fair so it should be considered rather than msg and wait, anyhow thanks for the wiki link.

          Below are the steps, you are given a referal link to share with your "mates" they use that link to sign up and that's it?

          1 Log in and refer your friends (we suggest you give them the heads up first).
          2 Wait patiently while they follow the link you sent and fill in the sign-up form.
          3 They become a Powershop customer.
          4 $75 power credit lands in your Powershop account.

    Going insane here… all these comments about Automated Referral System… where is there a mention of WHAT it is!? If I click on links named as that it just takes me to the deal page :(

    Someone …. WHAT IS the automated referral system and how do you use it!?
