User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

        • I just finished the sentence with:

*We will trial as suggested by many in this thread is to move the threshold for showing the OP link from 5 to 20 for the automated referral box (aka front page) this week.

          and changed to

*We will trial as suggested by many in this thread is to move the threshold for showing the OP link from 5 to 20 for the automated referral box (aka front page) to be implemented this week.

after a number of agitated comments. There is no set time.

        • +1

          @neil:
What do you mean "agitated comments"? No one was "agitated", people just want a good solution and said a longer trial would be better when it read like it would run for a week.
Anyway, the way it is now is clear.

        • @neil: ok, so a trial starts this week for at least one week? That's correct?

        • @pointless comment:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Forget I mentioned anything about a week. It's obviously confusing people.

          It's implemented. The End.

        • +1

          @pointless comment:
"There is no set time." (Ongoing trial)
@Neil hahaha we are with you now its OK :)

        • @neil: ok, so its implemented, until the end.

          Of time?

        • @pointless comment:

I think you should dedicate this song to neil :P

  • Looks like those changes have already been pushed out! Random referrals only showing if less than 20 positive votes now.
    That was quick!

  • Couldn't find it in here, but would we add Lyft referrals? I have just been to the US and the Lyft referral gives new riders $5 off each ride for their first 10 rides. I used someone else's code and this was brilliant in San Francisco, most rides there costing me less than US$7! Would love to share this with others. Lyft is looking at entering Aus market "soon" apparently.

    • We can look at it again when Lyft is available in Aus, we don't have any deals posted for Lyft now so the referral system won't be any benefit.

      Thanks

  • I noticed today that for Belong (ISP) referrals, it says "Referee will receive $20 off 1st payment, $0 activation and $1 modem." However, the referrer also receives $20 off their next bill, which should probably be added to the text.

  • Just an update. Amaysim has brought back its referral program. Everyone should put their referral info back in.

    • The referral links are missing the /r/ in the URL between amaysi.ms and the code.

      • Interestingly mine doesn't have /r/ — still working out the new scheme and it certainly redirects to a different URL.

        • Clicking through the random, some work and some link to http://amaysi.ms/index.html which looks like the Amp landing page. Confusing.

        • I personalised my link, and the personalised link doesn't have /r/. The original randomly generated one did.

        • @zzyss: Yeah mine is a personalised one. In fact I have 2 Amaysim accounts. Personalise one, and now it shows up on both accounts.

Edit: alright. It appears that the referral link is bound to email address rather than account.

  • Could we have a link set up for Koala Mattress? they have a $75 off referral program going on. Referrer gets $50. Cheers

I'm keen to get the AMEX platinum edge referral system going.

      Bit late (scroll down)

I'd also like to make a referral for Powershop:

      Again, bit late

All housed within the referral wiki

      • +1

I suppose the Amex one begs the question of why it can't be automated, if there is a known, fixed URL format.

        • +2

Current system allows only one referral system per store / domain. For AmEx it has different referral URL per product — something that we plan to develop "in the near future".

      • Thanks, I'd somehow missed it.

  • Hi
Don't know if I'm doing it the right way but could you add vividwireless to the referral wiki?

My referral is http://vw4g.co/59519 and the '59519' is the unique code. It can be got by logging in to the vividwireless account and going to the 'refer a friend' tab. https://online.vividwireless.com.au/account/referrals

When the referral code is entered when activating the account both get a free month's usage.

    Thanks

    • Thanks. It has been added. Vivid Wireless.

      • The Vivid Wireless referral code can be only used maximum 12 times. It turns out there are a lot of the randomized codes have reached the maximum of 12 redeemed referrals, it is a bit frustrating to fill out the whole long registration form, and found out the code cannot be used. As the code is random, is there a way to filter out those invalid ones, which has already been used up?

        • +1

Unfortunately there's no way for us to verify how many times the code has been used (or rather, costly to verify). I am setting the code to expire after 90 days so older code will be automatically removed.

        • @scotty: Thank you for your reply. May want to take consideration of last update time when randomizing?

        • @clix455: that wouldn't be random would it? :)

  • I have just added Airbnb to the user referral system. I know that you are not supposed to publicise it according to their T&C, but hiding behind a randomised system is still better than putting everyone's code on wiki.

I have tried to migrate all the code over from wiki. However please check whether the correct info has been copied over.

    • Are the links working? Usually when you click an Airbnb referral it will show you who sent the referral and the amount of the credit but when I click on the link from the referral system it just goes to the Airbnb homepage.

      • Looks like Airbnb explicitly checks for OzBargain in HTTP referrer. My home dev site is fine but OzBargain live site is not. I just put in a temporary fix to suppress sending the referrer so Airbnb does not know that it's coming from OzBargain. However the solution does not currently work with Internet Explorer (but works fine with Edge).

        • LOL, it's Airbnb vs Ozbargain, like Netflix vs geoblocking.

        • Working now on Chrome too.

Could this be happening with other referral links as well?

        • @Holysmoke: which other site blocks OzB referral?

    • Airbnb referral's page says "When a friend travels on Airbnb, you both get $40 AUD in travel credit. When they welcome their first guest, you get $100 AUD in travel credit."

Ozbargain's Airbnb page says "Referee gets $45 credit. Referrer gets $45 credit when referee travel, $83 when referee host.".

      Please update.

      • Thanks, will update now.

  • Maybe this is a stupid question, I know there's an AMEX referal wiki page but how do I edit?

    • If you are on an overseas IP address (including VPN) then the edit button won't appear. If this is an issue contact us via TWAM and we can bypass it for you.

      • thanks!

  • Can we please get Vultr.com referral Scotty?

    • Can you get a bit more information on their referral program? How to apply? What requirement? What benefit? Sorry I am not a Vultr.com customer so unable to find out.

      • Refer Vultr.com and earn $10 per paid signup!

        • $10 earned for every new unique paid user you refer.

        • Referred users must be 30+ days old and use at least $10 in payments to be counted as verified sales.

        • Payouts are finalized and issued on the business day following the 1st and 15th of each month.

The Ref link is like http://www.vultr.com/?ref=XXXXXXX

      • Refer Vultr.com and earn $10 per paid signup!

        • $10 earned for every new unique paid user you refer.

        • Referred users must be 30+ days old and use at least $10 in payments to be counted as verified sales.

        • Payouts are finalized and issued on the business day following the 1st and 15th of each month.

i posted an example ref link but it got done for spam

        • No worries. I can see the example.

        • +1

It has been added. However it appears that there's no benefit for the referred — just $10 for the referrer. People should be signing up with link offer instead to get $50 bonus credit.

  • mods, could we please add x-mirage referral??

    • X-Mirage deal site is just a white-labelled StackCommerce Site. You should have posted it with the StackSocial link instead, and we do have referral set up for StackSocial.

  • Could we look at adding Klook, Klook lets you buy tickets at a discount for tourist attractions focusing on South East Asia. Such as Universal Studios in Singapore, Disney Land in Hong Kong plus many more attractions. I brought tickets for Universal Studios Singapore and received the tickets instantly. If you download the app you can access the tickets even without wifi, which I used at Universal Studios, they just scan the barcode at the gate, no need to even print out the tickets. Klook refer a friend gives AUD4.5 to every friend who joins Klook and you AUD4.5 when your friend completes the experience booked. Also earn credits for booking experiences and writing a short review. My Klook Link: https://www.klook.com/invite/8E7LF
    Direct Link: https://www.klook.com/

    • We don't even have an existing Klook deal.

    • LOL maybe go post it over on OzBargain's sister site: cheapcheaplah.com

      • Yeah might be better to post it on cheapcheaplah.com

      • does ozbargain have any brothers.
        It has so many sisters.

        • LOL yeah so sexist.

I think it's a relic of European languages where everything has to have a gender. Maybe it should be brothers - "le site internet" is the translation of Website in French, which means it's "masculine".

          Maybe that's overthinking it a bit :-P

Merged from Time to introduce VPN.SH referrals

Looks like we could now earn referrals on vpn.sh:

For each user which you get to sign up to our service, your affiliate account will be credited with £4. Once you've amassed £12 in your affiliate account (so the equivalent of 3 signups), you'll be able to have this transferred to your PayPal account!

To register as an affiliate today, visit our affiliates page (https://www.vpn.sh/clients/affiliates.php). Once logged in, clicked "Activate Affiliate Account" and you'll receive your affiliate link. At the bottom of the page, there's a direct link to the order form which you can use if you wish to send friends directly to the checkout rather than to our website first.

Can we have this added to referrals page please?

    • +1

What benefit does referee receive? In the case of VPN.SH, the referrer receives direct monetary incentive (PayPal fund) and are treated as affiliate links on OzBargain.

  • +1

CurrencyFair has been added, where both referrer and referred will receive €30 + a free transfer.

  • How about Fiverr? They allow anyone signing up to get $5 ($5USD) free so you can get 1 gig for absolutely nothing, just for signing up - seems like a good deal to. The referrer only gets a $5 credit when the person who signed up spends $10 so it's not as great for referrers, but it's still a good deal for people signing up using a referral code.

    Here's my referral link: https://www.fiverr.com/s2/621a42d9dd
    Referral info page: http://support.fiverr.com/hc/en-us/articles/205654287-How-do…

    • How is it a good deal when the referred gets nothing?

      • Looks more like spamming the referral link… maybe change that link to a more generic one?

      • As I said, it's not such a good deal for the referrer (unless the person goes on to spend $10 on the service), but free $5USD for the person signing up is still free.

  • +1

Just added UberEATS to the list of referrals we support, as we have been getting quite a few referral spams lately. It's a tricky one as

    • Only in mobile apps
    • You can only get the code after the first order
    • Code does appear to expire after a while
    • Only available to Melbourne currently

So for now you can put in your UberEATS coupon code in our referral system. However it will auto-expire after a month.

  • +8

Another update to the user-referral system this morning. We will stop sending referral links / code from users who have not logged into OzBargain for more than 3 months. Because,

    • Referral is a benefit for active OzBargain users.
    • It also prevents people from creating accounts on OzBargain just to leave their referral code.

So if you have not accessed OzBargain as a logged in user for more than 3 months, your referral links / code will not be included in the random pool.

  • +1

Added Digital Concert Hall to referral system.

  • Can you please add Touchvoicemail. I think its already on choicecheapies. Thank you !!

    • I put together a wiki page for this deal. No point in having this system as it will be over in a day or two.

  • Could we get Deliveroo added?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256107

edit: Haven't created an account yet so that I can be referred, so can't see the details on how to get a link from the site.

    • Yes, just added. :)

      • thanks!

  • Could you please add Foodora to the referral list.

Example of a deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/258911.

Give $10 receive $10 for app orders.

  • MOD please review the comment above, thanks!

  • Can Vaniday.com.au be added to the system?
Referral for a $25 credit is in the form of: https://referral.vaniday.com.au/491D87E3

  • Scotty, I think there is a problem with the links to winedirect.com.au the correct referral link is not coming through and people aren't getting the benefit. I think it may be a coding issue with the individual link random referral generator

    • Wait. Are you an associate with winedirect, or Just a referrer?

    • Anyway. It should be fixed now.

      • Sorry, yes, I work for the company. Thanks for your help!

      • @scotty still seems to be broken. Can you please pm me a direct email so I can explain for you?

    • Is winedirect still not listed because of this?

      • +1

Yes there are some issues integrating winedirect's referral system so it's turned off at the moment.

    • We now support multiple parameters for referral and have turned it on for winedirect.

      • You the man Scotty, looks to be working now, greatly appreciated. I'll let you know if there stem any issues from our end

  • Cashrewards introduces Refer a Friend system now.

    • +1

      Added :)

  • Ratesetter's referral promotion has finished. Their referral page says "Sorry! We don't currently have any Welcome Bonus offers available. Make sure to check back regularly for new bonus offers or promotions"
