German-made Varta ones are $8.98 for 24 at Bunnings if I remember right.

Yep, Varta is the only sensible choice in Australia. DSE sell any old leaky crap.
Duracell and Energiser are good, but over-advertised and overpriced.(lets not mention Eneloops. Damn! )

Seems like there is no AAA stock at Masters (not to mention no store at all in Tassie). Regarding quality I have been buying the DS alkalines (AA and AAA) on special for the last twenty years or so and haven't had a single problem with leakage or otherwise. Perhaps the quality has gone off, or perhaps some isolated problems. Oh well I will have 60 arriving soon so I will find out. I know the eBay rechargeable cheapies usually die after a week or so.

Batteries leak beautifully in cold weather.
Leakage is due to a chemical reaction as the batteries age and poor construction.
