Sony RX100 (Mk I) for $389 Delivered from DWI ($396.78 after 2% PayPal Surcharge)

360

Look, I know it's from DWI, so buyer beware as there has been issues associated with them (especially when it comes to mobile phones)…personally, never had any trouble with any purchases from them…

Also be wary that this is the Mk I, not the newer Mk II version…still an extremely capable P&S, especially at this pricepoint…limited to 100 pieces, 98 still available the last time I checked…

And I haven't checked, but hopefully you won't be docked a 2% Paypal surcharge, since this is a DWI-Paypal special and you need to check out with Paypal…input PAYPALPREMIUM for free express shipping…

EDIT - just confirmed with DWI LiveChat that there is indeed a 2% surcharge, effectively making it $396.78…still a great price, IMO…

  • Incredible price. Buy a few and put them on eBay, even with the fee's you should still make a healthy profit.

    • Not sure about the whole eBaying to make a profit. Not saying you're wrong, youstill might make a profit but just but how much and is it worth the time? If anyone wants to do this, best to research and see how much the Mk I cameras have been selling and determine how much of a profit you can make.

But if you're buying one to actually use it, it's excellent value for the price. I previously had the Mk I and now have the Mk II. The image quality is really close. I'm not a massive pixel peeper so I can't tell the difference.

      • Hey bargainjargon, just wanna ask, is the MkII version worth the price, especially since it's about double the cost? I'm in the process of recommending a camera to a friend who is a relative newbie, and I'm finding it hard to go past this deal….

        • +1

IMHO not really no! MkII adds a hotshoe (for bigger flash / viewfinder) a tilting screen and WiFi built in. Also I was very curious to learn that the Mk I is made in Japan and the Mk II in China.. If that means anything to you.

        • Thanks for that! Yeah, didn't think that the new features on the MkII are worth it for someone starting out…I've already gone ahead and recommended her to jump on this deal..:)

    • If you sell someone something via ebay, do you have to provide warranty to them? If so, that might be problematic.

    • +4

There's no way you'd make a profit with this, the lowest price is ~$450 which includes shipping. After fees you're either looking at a loss or the slimmest of margins.

    • +1

remember the ebay fee , paypal fee , post fee :( now the ebay fee is included the price and the shipping fee .. i bought a nexus 7 $208 . sell it on ebay for $243 , but still loss $10.

  • Bought from DWI many times and never had an issue. I do prefer DigitalRev, however at times DWI offered a much better price on what I was after.

use rmn2014 to get $10.00 off instead of $7.50

      • Didn't get to use that code milfey, but thanks anyway :P
And thank you racer. Saved me $7.50!

      • +2

        mn2014 is invalid
BAE2013 does work though and gives $10 off

  • +2

Astonishing price, damn. I bought one from Kogan last year for $479, terrific camera that is unrivalled in its P&S category (and it punches well above its weight class, too)

  • great price!

  • Tempting.

  • +1

Great price for a great camera. I picked mine up for about $430 after an Amex rebate if i recall correctly. I rate it over the Canon G15 that I sold. MkII reportedly doesn't offer much improvement in terms of IQ, if at all.

I use it as a backup to my 6D SLR.

  • good deal!

  • Great camera, especially at that price. I get really nice bokeh (background blur) on my food!

I paid $600 when it first came out and I have no regrets. It's quite sturdy as well, I dropped it on a hard polished concrete at the Titanic exhibit and all it got was a tiny paint chip that revealed the metal. I wish it had a higher zoom though, too bad the RX10 is bigger and costs so much right now compared to the MFT options out there.

  • What are these like in comparison to the Micro 4/3 cameras such as the NEX-3?

Looking for something to take on my trip to Europe in July.

    • If you just plan to use the kit lens with m43/NEX cameras, you probably won't see a huge difference in the results - though personally I feel the m43/NEX have the edge in image quality. Once you start looking at the prime or high quality zooms for the m43/NEX cameras, they will blow the Sony RX100 away.

Of course, RX100 smokes them with respect to portability - which can be an important factor when travelling.

Personal experience: Have a RX100 and a M43 setup, used friend's NEX as well. I almost always prefer to use m43s over the RX100, and should probably sell it.

  • Best camera I've ever owned.

  • wow what a great price. Probably the best non DSLR camera out there.

    • -1

It's a very capable camera, but far from best (depending on definition). If extra portable is a concern, I still think Ricoh GR is a better camera (possibly less flexible, depending on needs), and I'd swap my RX100 for a GR any day of the week. Similarly, most reviews I've read seem to prefer the Panasonic GM1 in the ultra portable range.

Once you forget portability, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Leica, and Nikon all have cameras much more capable than the RX100 but not part of their DSLR ranges (e.g. Sony RX1, Leica M, Olympus EM-1, Fuji X100S, Nikon AW1).

      • Haha, thanks for your insight mooboy, helped me save a bit of money and tamed a bit of the GAS in me..:) I've already got the Ricoh GR, but was still contemplating jumping on this deal to see how good the RX100 is compared to the GR, as well possible using it to complement the GR…I did have doubts as to how much I would actually use the RX100, since I've gotten accustomed (and very fond) of the UI and handling of the GR…

        • +1

I'd rate the RX100 above the Ricoh, and not just because it is several hundred cheaper (zoom, f/1.8 at wide angle, better video modes and the very excellent "intelligent auto" shooting modes all were high on my priority list).

As for comparing the RX1/EM1/X100S to the RX100, lol. They're miles apart on the price spectrum: no one who is considering spending 'only' $500 on an RX100 is also looking at spending $1200-$3000 on those. Though with that said, can I just say how much I love these compact cameras with large APS-C sensors in them? Trend of the forever.

But like I've said a million other times: you almost cannot buy a bad camera these days, once you get past throwaway $100 P&S's from local box movers. Just cameras with different capabilities (like the beautiful bokeh and wonderful customisation of that Ricoh)!

        • +1

Each to their own, I guess…:) Back when I bought my GR, there was no way you could get the RX100 for this price, and with both of them roughly about the same price, it was a case between zoom and wider aperture (on the wide end only, mind you) but smaller sensor of the RX100 versus APS-C sensor and UI/customization but fixed focal length (though "zoomable" with in-built crop of 35mm and 47mm) of the GR…in the end, GR won, and I have had no regrets getting it, just an absolute joy of a camera to use…

But agree with your point, both are excellent cameras, just different cameras with different capabilities suited to your individual needs…

        • +1

I was just referring to the comment "Probably the best non DSLR camera out there" with the comparisons to CSC cameras etc. I could have compared it to an Olympus E-PM2 at similar price point, but yeah, I was going for extreme examples - hence Leica M at a lazy 8k.

But totally agree with you, it's actually quite hard to buy a bad camera these days :)

Personally, I find I never touch the Sony RX100, it just always stays at home. Which, is a pity, as other day my EM-1 was not allowed into a venue for being a '35mm camera' with 'good video', whereas I'm sure the RX100 would have slipped right by. My protestations that 'Olympus cameras are crap for video' didn't work…

  • Possible to claim gst on this ?

    • +1

      Don't think so, seeing it's a grey import…

I was able to buy the MKII for $450. but didn't. This is kinda a eh deal to me.

    • Is it part of the Sony X deal? You are definitely in the minority…not many people can actually get access to such a deal, whereas this is readily available for everyone…

EDIT - And if wasn't part of any Sony X deals, shame on you for not sharing it with us…;D

    • So what was the crack with that deal? Where and when?

  • -2

You are not going to get the camera until 100 people are committed to buy. At the moment only 47 are committed. So don’t get too excited yet. What if number doesn’t reach 100, are you going to get your refund? They could hold on to your money for a very long time and earn interest on this. Can someone confirm on this, as I am only guessing here.

    • +2

I can understand how you came to that conclusion if you read it as it has been worded, but it's just a case of it being poorly worded…I just got off the LiveChat with DWI, apparently that isn't the case, they have 100 pieces in stock, and if you were to go ahead to purchase it, you won't have to wait til 100 pieces has been sold, your transaction will be processed when you finalize your purchase…

    • I bought one when only 30 or so were listed as bought. Payment cleared and it's apparently arrived in Brisbane already in just a day.

  • Thanks ( Quiexo) for the confirmations.Cheers

  • Just wondering if anyone has had their transaction processed?

    • +1

I have. I posted some more details below.

Had decided to buy one from Kogan before this deal was posted so jumped on this. Bought one yesterday early morning (4-5am). Progress so far shown below.

Because of my remote location I did have to pay some postage. The free postage deal is only a -$7.50 postage (which covers most addresses).

  • Does anyone know what kind of battery/charging accessories will come in this package? Will I need to buy an Australian adapter?

    • +2

It uses a powerpack that has a standard AC plug adpator (one of these http://www.linoya.com/asp_bin/proimg/1345449891.JPG) to micro USB 5v 1500ma.

So even if it comes with an OS AC wall outlet adaptor, you can pick up the standard ones really cheaply, or get a wall mount adaptor for OS devices for under $5.

Buyer regret? Yes I ordered one yesterday [actually wee in the morning today ~4am. I told myself that I don't need it no matter how cheap it is because I've already had a good P&S in
the LX5 [which I paid more in American$]. I should have closed the webrowser or atleast the tab that display the DWI site. But I didn't and just a few clicks while half asleep, I ordered one. DWI looks more like a DUI now. I feel bad. I still don't know what was the reason fir me to order one. Yes it's a good deal, still 400 bucks is a lot. Beautifully good camera? How much better the image quality it can give me over my LX5? And the more important Q is that what I'm going to do with my LX5? I felt bad. Less than 4 yrs ago when the LX5 just announced, I told myself I'm paying premium money to get this excellent camera and I won't have to buy another new one for a long time… Now after only 3.5 yr I ordered a new one?

Sorry for the whining But I've seen people buying things because it's cheap rather than buying because they need it. The lust of owning this camera overcame me last night [this early morning]. I hope none of you got caught in the situation like me.

    Cheers!

    • +1

I enjoyed this story. Take solace in the fact that you now own two fantastic cameras - the Rx100 is in another class to the LX5, as good as it is.

And if the remorse is still eating away at you, I'm sure you have no trouble selling the RX100 for more than you paid for it in good time.

    • It's only $400 and you're getting a great camera, relax it's small change in the greater scheme of things.

  • Is anyone physically received their order yet and at the right price?

    • I ordered mine on the 19th April using Standard Shipping and received it last Wednesday (30th April). $386.58

  • I wont be using DWI again - my experience has been shocking. No one knows where my camera is - I have had to make numerous calls to the courier company and sent off many emails to the muppets at DWI. Each reply is robotic and generic and doesn't help in any way. In fact the replies only make things worse as they show no remorse or empathy for the mess they have created.

The online tracking now says that I signed for it …………in Hong Kong! haha
    Oh dear oh dear.
Who are these guys - shocking service. Not sure I will even get the camera now. And this is the premium express service!

Anyway - I hope you all got yours…eventually.

    Cheers

  • Mixed results…great camera & great price. Very luck if you got one.
