  • Is a new model due soon?

    • At least June, probably later

But the rumors are it'll be a bigger change than the usual 'new chips and done'

    • Only Apple knows but they have been refreshing their MacBook Air line in June/July for the past three years.

    • this one is the June 2013 model, almost a year old, i think the price would have to be <$1K to get people excited and shift lots of stock

    • Intel hasn't unveiled their next core i generation yet, so a new mac air would come around October

      • Speculation is saying it might not be an Intel chip.

    • +1

Yes, in the second half of 2014. Fanboys (and me) are hoping for a retina screen.

  • +9

    FYI - 4gb ram, intel i5 (425OU), 128gb SSD, 13.3" 1440x900, 12hr+ battery life.

Let's stop treating apple products differently from any other brand. Instead, let's treat them on their merits.

    • +5

let's treat them on their merits.

that would be fine if they ran the same OS

      • +21

Yup. And dat trackpad! Nothing else like it.,

        • +1

I must admit, I'm intrigued by that trackpad.

        • +1

Haven't used a Windows laptop yet that matches my MBP for quality of build and the trackpad.

*Also a PC gamer, so no Apple coloured glassses here.

        • Just disable all but 1 button on your trackpad… then image that 1 button is 10* bigger.

I use a MBPr ~ after spending a month tweaking (defaults and removing extensions and stupid apps) 10.9.x, I'm happy, OSX stability is much worse than Win7 and NO it's not my tweaks it's the damn NVidia m750 drivers.
Chrome and PS6 (Adobe suit) work much better on a decent Win7 machine.
There's a couple apps that help make OSX much more usable… BetterTouchTool and MiddleClick.

I use Fusion for Windows, and that crashes sometimes.

As for build quality… my bottom cover creaks and aluminium makes a sound like is unsticking from the battery… fairly common, Youtube it https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=macbookpro+crea…

        • Hmm I have never had my bottom cover creaking on my MacBooks. I have always found them to pretty solid and reliable machines.

        • That's cool, but I have rarely, if ever had OS X crash. Apps. Sure, but the OS go borked? Not so much.

I have Fusion for running windows and it is okay, but really I only use it for minor stuff. If I really need windows I will bootcamp into it.

I love the MBP, but with the recent move to soldering everything in and the high price, I might have to seriously reconsider it when my MBP 2011 dies. The way I look at it is you get two computers for one and it is beautiful.

I am at the stage of my life where I am willing to pay for aesthetics and quality. iOS 7 sucks balls though and I will stich with Android ;)

      • OS experience is subjective. Hardware is objective and can be tested.

Perhaps ios is better that all other alternatives, and worth the price premium. Or perhaps apple users are just being scammed by a brand image, it's hard to tell.

But whenever I see a deal for an app on ozbargain such as the recent one that allowed users to print(?!) with more freedom/control, I do suspect it's the latter.

          OS experience is subjective.

not if you develop iOS apps…

    • +6

      Except Apple products are different.

    • +11

Or leave the endless arguments to dorks on forums. I don't use Macs but this is still a good deal, people can make up their own minds as to fitting their needs.

  • Pretty good deal that's around $60-$100 cheaper than all the education offers I have access to.

  • +11

My phone has a higher resolution than this.

  • When I use a macbook air even at the grand price of free.. I end up wishing I was using a windows machine. Trying to use the OS just feels so frustrating.

    • +14

      As many do with Win8.

      • +15

Agreed. Win8 is fantastic right up until the point where a win8 feature kicks in. e.g. open a photo and your screen suddenly becomes one ap and all visibility of multitasking disappears. It's the evolution that never needed to happen.

        • -3

It's the evolution that never needed to happen.

          just like the Windows phone.

        • +3

open a photo and your screen suddenly becomes one ap and all visibility of multitasking disappears.

You speak as if that can't be changed. Right click > open with…
Also, with Windows 8.1 Update 1, Metro apps are now more palatable for the desktop user (access to the traditional title bar and taskbar). Still not preferable, but much better than the original implementation

        • That's what I do.

Every so often though, I forget to hit open with, and then I need to go to the top left of my screen and switch back. My screen goes half half between my desktop and an app I never wanted to open in the first place. Cue intense frustration when the PC can't tell I want to close down a horrible app, and there is no "x" button to be seen to close it down.

I don't know who was head of design, but It's everything that I hate about using a mobile phone crammed into a desktop.

        • Every so often though, I forget to hit open with

Then just set defaults for the file types as you encounter them, and you'll soon stop making that mistake altogether. Can't even remember the last time I entered a Metro app without meaning to.

and there is no "x" button to be seen to close it down.

As I just said, there is now.

No, I don't like the Metro ecosystem on the desktop either (jury's still out on tablets), and I don't like how Microsoft approached it, but it'll only ruin your W8 experience if you let it.

      • Windows 8 made me go to OS X.

      • Yeah I agree Win 8 is just as horrible an experience for me. I'm pretty much treating Win8, Win8.1 like Vista and am keeping my fingers crossed hoping the next one is going to be more intuitive.

    • With Windows 8, you can be interrupted when you're in the middle of doing something important and told the system will restart in a few minutes whether you like it or not.

      • +1

Yeah, that really pissed me off. Don't know who thought that was a good idea. For anyone interested: to stop that, first search for Windows Update settings > 'Choose how updates get installed' > select the second or third option in the dropdown.

        • Yep, and if you happened to just leave some stuff open that you were working on without having saved it, you come back from lunch with a nicely rebooted PC and all your work gone. Yes, I know, save and save often…. but that was a bizarre decision by MS.

    • The most stable Windows 8 platform is a Mac - no kidding, we had one guy in the office running it native, looks, feels and runs good!

  • Wish this was the price for MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch : )

  • can't believe that my Mac Air 13 would hold its value that long lol, I was thinking about getting rid of it the other day for $900 coz rarely use it then get a Surface Pro 128GB for less than $600, phew
