Just a note, the M50 X is the same sound wise as the ATH-M50s. They have simply added some new colours and detachable 3.5mm headphone jack. Audio Technica have taken a very "If it ain't broke don't fix it" stance on this one. If you detachable cable isn't important to you I would recommend saving a few $$$ and getting the original.

There is a detachable cable mod for the M50s which will set u back around $20 in parts needed at jaycars. Which would save you a reasonable amount.

Why the negative votes? At least comment to explain guys…

        • +1

          Because he neg'd, I'm guessing.

        • +3

Because a DIY project isn't a reason to neg a deal IMO.

        • Because if you get the normal one, it's about $150.
Also the one with the detachable cable and the one without actually do sound different from measurements, but I'm not sure if this is audible, it might be since it's in the treble if I recall correctly.
Also, the cable that you use can affect the audio quality, so be careful. Going for the one without the removable cable might be a better option in this case.

      • yeah always wanted to mod my m50s but dunno where to get a good quality 3.5mm jack

the ones on jaycar and ebay look pretty flimsy

i want to get something more like this

I did mine with one I got from eBay which fitted perfectly in the cable hole that was already there. Word of warning, the M50s is quite cramped inside so you should aim for a smallish plug. If you use the one you pictured (which looks like a good choice), try and do a better job than this guy.

        • The ones with screws are alright coz you just pass one end through the hole and screw the jack tight. Thats how i did mine.

        • After you mod the plug, where do you get the cable from or did you solder something on the cableo too? Just wondering how yous do it.

        • I bought one double male 3.5mm pin and recycled the default one by soldering on a pin for occasions when a long cable is needed.

      • The neg may not be justified from your rules here, but i am certain many wouldn't fork out that much to just get a removable cable jack.

    • Read my mind :) this is the first thing i thought of when i saw the price.

  • Nice find op, I quite like the new colour scheme. Looks much better than the original plain black or the blood red they had going. Too bad I just bought a pair of UE 6000 from Dicksmith last week, otherwise would so jump at this. Faster delivery too as to buying from Amazon

Hoping one day the original M50s go on sale, can't justify the detachable cable for the price hike.

Great colour scheme but not the cheapest:
    http://www.techoni.com.au/electronics/headphones/audio-techn…
    $169.32 ($147.42 + shipping) in black

    or

    DWI (yes I know…)
    http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Audio-Technica-AT…
($175 with free ship) for white

    • Yeah I probably wouldn't buy from the first guys: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/techoni.html

Not sure why you said "yes i know…" for DWI, have they gone downhill recently?

      • If you are okay with having pretty much 0 after-sale, then feel free.

Warranties etc. are horrible through DWI.

  • Holy moly these look sick. Bought the original M50 from gadgetbliss. They are awesome headphones

  • I think this new version has improved earpads, which get crusty and hard in no time on the original model.

    • Man that would be an improvement, mine cracked after less than 6 months! Luckily they still sound amazing regardless.

  • This sound amazing but my head feel cramped a lot of time after listening for more than half an hour. Any suggestion to reduce it?

    • Did you try stretching them? E.g using a few books or a PC and leave them there for a while?

      • Yeah i did. I like the HD 598 or audio technica AD 900 feels, no cramp at all but their sound not as powerfull as this on the bassy side

        • They are both open headphones and also generally much MUCH more comfortable. If you are looking for bassy open headphones you should check out the Fischer Audio FA-011 or the Philips Fidelio X1 (best open bassy headphones I know of). A good comfy pair of closed bassy headphones would be the DT-770, however they are not very portable.
