  • Does it include a tour of Saundra, Santiago?

The flights are actually via LAN ("Valid for flights operated with LAN via Auckland on QF321/322 only") but that's still pretty fancy for AirScootStarAsiaTigeresque people like me. I noticed last week that there are in fact quite a few return journeys to SA onboard LAN this year as well under $1500 when checked with SkyScanner (to not only Chile but Argentina and Peru as well).

These non-competitive South American routes traditionally exceed $1700 return (and well-over!) from Sydney so the market is pretty good if you're really flexible.

    • sorry didn't read the fine print. corrected now.

      • Sorry, but what exactly is LAN?

        • LAN is Peru's national airline , kinda like QAntas. Except its a Chilean company.

Airline's ok, except its a bit farcical when something goes wrong,
Operators are stuck in a 'computer says no' script and there really is no decent communication with passengers. I'm writing this after experiencing a huge delay due to mechanical breakdown. To Peru

LAN were ok at NZ, giving me and my 2 year old $90 of food vouchers to cope with a 13 hour delay at NZ.
However, Santiago was a farce, stuck for 3 hours with 100's of people, in transit at the airport no food or water, eventually they shoved us on a bus and booked us into a 5* hotel - at nearly 1am.
Hotel refused to provide wifi password
A loose description on paper a stewardesssaid 2.15am pickup??
Taxi eventually rolled up at 530 for a 730 flight as they had forgot to book the bus.

Plus side, cheap, nice hotel and a 48 hour adventure for my 2 year old
Negative side, poor coordination and communication

Also note further, I had a native Spanish speaker in Peru chasing LAN to get more info on the phone, that's the only way I managed to cope!

As per the below poster. There's LAN Chile. They're a pretty good airline, esp. for South America. Better than Aerolineas, for example, which are garbage.

        • Just a correction. LAN is Chile's national airline. It began as LAN Chile and now has expanded to Peru, Argentina and Colombia. They are merging with the Brazilian TAM.
It's way better than Aerolineas Argentinas but not as good as Qantas. 1400 for a ticket is good value for money, though.

  • I booked similar flights last year. And if you are planning to go around South America, it's normally not much more to fly back from Buenos Aires/Sao Paulo.

  • It's around 1900 - 2063 aud from Melbourne to Rio de janiero. Thats a really good deal. and it's at the time of carnaval too! (which is peak time)
