How does this compare to the Samsung EVOs ?

    • Comprehensively beaten in every aspect; doesn't render it useless but I still maintain in the 240GB size bracket that people get Evo 840s. I'd wait for another price drop on them; they were $139 last month.

The 480/500GB bracket, is where you get more value for an M500, as the 480GB is faster than the 240GB and a lot cheaper than other 480GB options.

In benchmarks - Reads are on par and Sequential Writes slower but in real life you wouldn't notice the difference.

Quality wise - The Crucial does a better job at it's housekeeping of it's files (search Garbage Collection) and apparently suffers less from sudden loss of power (blackout, PSU failure) than the Samsung.

At the same price point I'd pick the Crucial. I'd only pick the Samsung if it was significantly less but I'd happily take the Samsung over a Kingston.

  • How do you gamers do it with these?
with there limited space and with games like titanfall being 50gb installed the space would just get eaten up with only a few games.
i understand SSD for os and games/main programs and HDD for storage but with games being 50gb and most likely getting bigger in newer games wouldnt last long.

Get a 480/500GB SSD at a minimum, if you're going to be gaming heavily. Not just for the extra room but the extra head-room as well, as filling up an SSD close to capacity seriously murders its performance. You want at least 30% free space at all times, possibly more depending on the SSD you've got; some of them turn into $80 dollar SSDs past 50% used space. Anandtech did a good study on this.

I just rotate my games between SSD and HDD as I start playing them again. I rarely play more than one thing at a time though, so it may not be a viable strategy for most. Still, better than spending more on a new one (for me).

      • +2

        This. ^^^
I keep steam on a 3tb drive with all my games installed, then just add a second steam folder on the ssd and copy whatever game i am playing at the moment over to the ssd. (and only if i can be stuffed doing it, there is rarely a game these days with loadtimes long enough to warrant it imo)
You can only play one at a time after all ;D
        Rotate as needed!

        • Origin and UPlay have issues with having two separate game libraries on different drives from my experience.

It is a pain if you're going to reformat as well, as you have to go and find all the savegame and config data that's split up as well as any installations and back them up to a central location.

Certainly would be smoother to just have everything in the one, centralised location.

But I agree on the loading times point, I usually find I only need 3 or 4 multiplayer games on my SSD at the one time, that I want to have instantaneous load times for.

        • I had the same problem when I transferred BF4 from a HDD to a SSD… it would take 7 to 10 minutes to load a map… then I just did a "repair" and it fixed the problem… now it loads in 3 or so minutes… (i5 4670K@4400 Mhz + GTX770 + 8gb 2133 + 250Gb Samsung SSD)

      • hmm ill need to research how you do this.
i currently have a 1tb HDD in my gameing computer.

I have most of my games on a 2TB ext drive via USB3, honestly apart from the odd "next level" load times it does not seem worthwhile spending so much extra for a 500GB SSD imho.. still not cheap enough tbh.

    • I use a 240gb, just keep my favorite games on there, so just CS, Skyrim and Next Game game. All the genres covered nicely.

  • So tempting…

  • +1

The m500 is good at 480 gb level not at 240 level, :(
If the m500 489 is at 199 usd, then that's worth it.

  • Thanks OP. I ordered one along with a Silverstone 2.5" to 3.5" SSD bracket and Sata3 cable into the order. Chose expedited delivery which was only $9.91 USD for the 3 items. Everything i need. It would beat the crap out of my current Seagate 2TB HDD. Well that's my very first SSD bought from Amazon.

Like geez i remember paying this price just for a 120GB SSD. Now this is twice the space. That's enough for me all i need is TF2 and a few other games installed.

By the way i know that standard delivery is only $5.77 USD but if you switch it to expedited delivery it then becomes only $8.03 USD for the shipping of this SSD. That's only $2.26 USD extra shipping fee for expedited (probably i-parcel) if you want it to be delivered a lot faster. There must be some shipping deal because expedited delivery on most things is usually around $15 USD. Otherwise standard delivery you'll maybe be waiting a month for delivery.

My order is already in the shipping now stage. That was quick.

    • Otherwise standard delivery you'll maybe be waiting a month for delivery.

Since when? I've ordered a lot of things from Amazon over the years, and the longest anything has ever taken is 8 days (not business days) using their standard delivery service.

      • The last standard delivery parcel (through DHL Global Mail) i had from Amazon US took over a month to arrive and that was recently. I've never ever had a standard delivery parcel from Amazon US arrive in only 8 days. There's no way that your parcels have been getting delivered through normal standard (mail postal system) delivery (snail mail) in 8 calendar days.

More like Amazon had upgraded the shipping for you to expedited behind the scenes as a bonus for free and you just didn't know it. Just because you've been a fluke lucky doesn't mean that every one will get 8 days or less shipping through a standard delivery order. Because an actual standard delivery shipment (such as DHL global mail) really doesn't arrive to some one's front door from the USA half way around the world in a week. We're talking about international standard postal mail delivery which is slow as a wet wig.

I know Amazon Canada does that sort of thing upgrade standard delivery orders to express courier for free bonus to the customer behind the scenes even though the order history still says standard delivery.

        • I've had orders delivered in less than 2 weeks on their standard method

        • There's no way that your parcels have been getting delivered through normal standard (mail postal system) delivery (snail mail) in 8 calendar days.

Well it has, and does, on many occasions. It's a common known thing (/joke), you can get parcels from Amazon quicker than you can from Melbourne to Perth, and for cheaper as well.

Just because you've been a fluke lucky doesn't mean that every one will get 8 days or less shipping through a standard delivery order

Clearly you missed the part where I said the longest I've waited is 8 days. This isn't just a once off, I've order dozens of things from Amazon in the last 2-3 years. But oh yeah, all of them have just been a fluke.

We're talking about international standard postal mail delivery which is slow as a wet wig.

No, you're the one saying it is actually. Sure there are stories that some packages are delayed, but I'm telling you all the orders I've had from Amazon have arrived within 8 days. Oh actually, one didn't (a watch I ordered last November). That took just under 2 weeks to arrive, but the delay was with actually posting it.

        • I ordered some dog clippers at the end of January that took just under than 3 weeks to arrive.

          Get off your high horse.

        • Yeah. Can take even longer time when the snow blizzards hit the US. Seems to hold back shipments even longer. So not unusual for Amazon Global standard delivery to take 3-4 weeks to arrive around this time of the year.

Meanwhile the last Amazon Global expedited delivery through i-parcel i had recently was shipped on 8 April 2014 and arrived on 23rd April 2014. Just over 2 weeks.

Now if it takes 2 weeks for an expedited delivery through i-parcel to arrive what chance does a standard international postal delivery have in making it from the USA to a front door in Australia in 8 days or less. Yeah right. Not from the USA that's for sure. Maybe express courier makes it in 8 days or less not any actual standard shipment.

I think some one's been boasting about getting standard deliveries from the USA in less than 8 days but really behind the scenes some one working for Amazon has been giving him freebie express courier shipping upgrades without him knowing. Maybe he has a mate who's high up in the Amazon employee chain?.

        • Maybe he has a mate who's high up in the Amazon employee chain?.

Oh no you're onto me! Ok I'll admit it, Jeff Bezos is my uncle. There.. The truth is out. I'm also heir to his fortune as well.

Sorry that my own personal experiences don't suit your whole 'Amazon is SOOOO slow for delivery!'
Guess Uncle Jeff has put a note on my account to send my stuff quicker, the old bugger still doesn't give me a discount though. Will have to ask him about that.

        • Lmao. Their not the only one getting faster delivery than you. It could be based of your location in Australia I'm 20min out of Melbourne CBD and get orders in less than 2 weeks.

PS: no ties to anyone associated with Amazon

  • I now use SSD for system and softwares but SSHD (the hybrid drive) for chunky games. SSHD can easily achieve SSD-Like performance while have 1-4TB of storage and a reasonable price.

    • Agreed, SRT setups can't be beat for convenience when you have a huge collection of games and don't want to waste time transferring back and forth. Typically reaches 80% the performance of a dedicated SSD drive when it hits the cache.

    • Yup. Just noticed the 2tb Seagate SSHD for $109usd ($137 AUD with expedited shipping) on Amazon, same price as the SSD but 10 times the storage. Time to upgrade my games drive. :)

  • Not a gamer (anymore). How does this drive perform with VM's?

    • very well. if you are running esxi, you can add this as cache for vmem files, which allows much faster memory swapping if your box is near 100% memory utilization.

Good deal but I would rather purchase from Shopping Express

    • +1

Why may i ask?. Amazon is great even if the order does get lost in delivery they immediately ship out a replacement free of charge.

      • Not sure about motion2082, but I recently bought mine from Shopping Express for $140.

I do it to support local business and Shopping Express have faster delivery than Amazon using the cheaper shipping option.

  • Is it compatible with MacBook Pro?

    • Works on mine…

  • Good price. Got mine for $140 del. from a prev. SE deal.

    • Yeah this deal is even better. I just paid $140 AUD delivered shipped through expedited (i-parcel) for this 240GB SSD, SSD mounting bracket and a SATA3 data cable. Bargain.

So basically all you need to get up and running for a desktop system for $140 delivered now since this SSD doesn't come with a 3.5" mounting bracket nor sata data cable.

  • Price has gone up to $114.99 USD. Not such a best deal any more.

  • Got my Crucial M500 240GB SSD from Amazon today from this deal. It came with the MU03 firmware which i immediately updated to MU05. It's blazing fast even on my SATA 2 motherboard compared to the Seagate 2TB HDD i was using as the boot drive.
