Acer V5-132 11.6" Notebook $299 (Was $399) @ Officeworks

150

Saw this in the Officeworks catalogue (WA) today.
The $299 price is stated as being the 'new everyday price', down from $399.
I don't know if this deal is nationwide.

$299 price as per catalogue here

Specs (from OW website):

I'm guessing that this laptop would be alright for a student or something like that, but doubt the battery would be that strong. You get what you pay for.

There was also a generic looking 16GB thumbdrive for $9.97.

      but wait.. it's got 4 built-in speakers… compared to other laptops that's a great speaker/dollar ratio.

  • Asus x201/x202 … a better buy?

I have this computer I bought it second hand a while ago for $240. You will need to upgrade the RAM to 6GB otherwise forget it. So factor in an extra $40

    • And even better, also add a ssd and you would end up with a decent portable machine as opposed to a chromebook of the same size.

    My Acer experience:

I got an Acer V3-571 for $530 from Officeworks (Not G) in about September 2012. For those looking for specs it came with a 500Gb HDD, 4Gb DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8Gb), i3-2350 processor, 15 inch screen, a numeric keyboard and Windows 7. At the time it was fairly good value for money which is what I needed. It has a great battery life rivalling my early 2011 MacBook Pro which averages about 4.5 to 5 hours when used for internet browsing and programming at about 75% brightness. Its still running strong on both Windows and Ubuntu with the only flaws being its tinny built-in speakers and the trackpad is too sensitive when you first use it making it difficult to properly use the space key but its easily adjustable.

  • might skip this deal and go for the acest notebook

its $299 in the latest SA catalogue too (received yesterday). Had a play with one at officeworks keswick yesterday. for the money it looks like a pretty solid unit - a modern 'netbook'.

the celeron is a cut-down ivy bridge processor i think.

Some of you guys are too quick to judge, based on your own personal/biased opinion. You have to remember that like myself, a lot of people today already have a fast computer at home, and want a second/third computer/tablet that is portable/smaller/lighter to take away/out of house, or on your lap on the couch. Hence battery life becomes important too, and just to give you an idea of CPU performance compared to another very popular portable/small device ( which I like), the Asus T100TA passmark score of 1063 against 1445 for this one. As mentioned above, add more ram and possibly a ssd ( which you can not do with a lot of new portable devices ), and you have yourself a nice efficient portable/light machine. Good Value for your money I say.

Thanks OP, just picked one up. It seems well built, but the 5400RPM drive is sooo slow. Anyway, I was expecting this and have a spare SSD at home. As someone else mentioned worth a visit to MSY for some extra RAM on the weekend. The screen is decent, but the viewing angle is not great. All in all, if it's not your main lappy, and you're looking for something this size and 1.4KG, it's a great buy. Also mine came with a decent neoprene sleeve in the box.

    • I maxed out the ram in my Acer V5 15" to 8 GB ( you really need to go for 8 GB to get a decent gain because I am fairly sure the mother boards run the ram at 1066 mhz only ). Adding a ssd made all the difference to boot ( pun intended :-). Although mine has an i3 3327u, before the upgrades I was disappointed with the performance of my new W8 computer. I have an Asus F501A with only a pentium B970 and 4 GB ram ( but the much faster 1600 mhz ( might be clocked down to 1033 mhz not sure ), running W7, and this used to be quicker, now fairly even ( after putting a ssd in the Asus too, couldn't help myself ).

I cracked this open last night. The RAM upgrade is easy and I bumped it up to 6GB. The HDD upgrade looks tricky and is not for the feint of heart. There is a very fine ribbon connector over the hard disk that needs to be removed and lots of tape and goo holding the hard disk in place, so I decided to just leave the existing one in place.

Since this is only a backup lappy for HAM software that won't run on a Mac, and I can now blow away my bootcamp partition, I'm still happy with the purchase.

Thanks for the excellent info. For me, there has to be an easy way to replace the HD and RAM for me to be interested. It looks like this model doesn't pass the easy hard drive replacement test.

  • The display one at Pitt St. store has a Celeron 1019Y and I cannot find any performance benchmark info.

    • Ran PassMark PerformanceTest from a USB flash drive and it scores 1056 CPU Mark versus 1593 for the Celeron 1017U but also uses less power so should offer longer battery life.

      • Personally I would not go for that slower cpu. In the long run you wished you went with the faster 1017u or up.
