  In this DIY world, there must be a way for people to run some [open source] software that can sign our code cost-free, & later: lodging somesort of key with a secure serving company.

  What justifies all the expense of annual subscriptions here?!?

  If you want to have an application that you want to automatically run from the browser, applet or .net, you
  will need a code signing certificate to prevent the browser from throwing off all those warnings or prevent your
  app from running.
