    Refurbished

Should probably go in the title.

  • does the warranty work here?

    • dell warranty on the venue is not transferable to a different country, according to the t&cs

      • damn the warranty issue is a killer for me, what a good deal though

  • One downside is that it doesn't have HDMI output. Would be a nice desktop replacement for some if it would.

    • You can buy a USB 2.0 to video adapter coupled with an OTG cable. I have one and its pretty decent.

And then you need to do some tricky cabling to get charging working simultaneously with USB OTG devices.

they are currently $298.99 ($100 off until 8 May) on the dell site. That is new, with warranty

    What.

    • +2

hahahaha… someone actually read the product description..

  • Note* This product does NOT include Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will need to be purchased separately.

Just in case someone needed Office.

    • MS Office alone is about $100?

I'm using one right now, hard to say if I like it all that much. It is what it is, An 8 inch windows 8 PC. As expected, windows is very hard to use on such a small touchscreen, you constantly press the wrong thing. (metro mode is retarded, I only use desktop mode)

From memory I think there was just under 10 GB of HDD to play with. Mine is the 32GB model.

The texture on the bottom is not a very nice texture, it doesn't feel pleasant to hold. I prefer the metallic surface of my Acer W700 more. Would have preferred a more rubbery grip instead. I use mine to watch shows while I go on walks. Holding it landscape feels awkward because there is so little room between the edges and the screen for me to keep a good grip. I always feel like I'm about to drop it and I often plant my fingers on the screen - which pauses the video which I don't want. I wouldn't mind another 50grams if they would only make it easier to grip!

Processing speed is still a bit unspectacular. No problems running videos.

That's one reason why I'm waiting for a good 8" with a Wacom digitizer and FHD screen. The Asus doesn't have the best reviews. The Thinkpad Tablet 8 looks like it would be perfect if only it had a digitizer. Sigh!

(metro mode is retarded, I only use desktop mode)

I find metro mode great for tablets, but pointless on desktops. I can navigate around win8 metro on a tablet more quickly than on an Android tablet.

Answer to your prayers (almost): Asus VivoTab Note 8. No FHD display.

        • I played with it at a store, but as I mentioned above, it doesn't have the best reviews, and I could see why after playing with it. The display's blacks are grey, it's a bit thick, and there are quite a number of complaints about the Wacom digitizer not working well. It's quite a bit better than the Dell Venue 8 Pro's Synaptics horror, but not as good as the one on the Thinkpad Tablet 2.

The new Thinkpad Tablet 10 will be FHD and have a Wacom digitizer, but it's 10" and will no doubt be extremely expensive.

I guess you'd be hard pressed to find a FHD res. on a display below 9-10" as the companies don't see a need to add to the cost of the unit w/ a better display panel as they think the average consumer won't distinguish between quality on such a small screen. As long as you can't see the pixels its ok.

Below is a list of all the 8" windows tabs released so far AFAIK:
          -Asus VivoTab Note 8
          -Dell Venue 8 Pro
          -Toshiba Encore 8
          -HP ThinkPad 8
          -Acer Iconia W4-820

Beside the Surface Pro, the only other 10" thats decent is HP Omni 10 which has a FHD screen, but no digitiser.

        • +1

Well, the Lenovo (not HP) ThinkPad 8 is FHD. Android is heading in that direction too - last year's Nexus 7 and LG G Pro 8.3 were 1920x1200. This year's Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is even higher at 2560x1600. For some reason Windows tablets lag behind in screen resolution.

        • Add: Lenovo Miix 2 8

        • that uses a capacitive stylus which is about as good as a .. finger. :(

"I use mine to watch shows while I go on walks."
What an unusual use for a tablet. I've never seen anyway with a tablet in one hand watching reruns of Seinfeld and a water bottle in the other, as they skillfully traverse busy cross traffic, pedestrians, cyclists and roadside obstacles. How on earth do you do it?
Even if you do this in the bush you would definitely walk into a tree or fall down a mine shaft because your eyes aren't scanning for obstacles ahead and around of you. :P

      • Front facing camera using picture-in-picture? ;)
