    wow cool ! canon 40mm pancake lens is just 167$. worth getting it to pair with my canon100d ? will jbhifi price beat it?

      It's absolutely worth it. 40mm f/2.8 is a fantastic lens to use, very sharp, focusing speed is good and focus distance is close enough to take some 'nearly' macro shots. Normally, JB will beat the price as I usually did.

      In an attempt to chalk up some CPD points as a 'professional', I ducked into the nearby HN, and here are some (slightly paraphrased) highlights from the conversation:

      I say I want to buy the camera in question, and confirm I will buy their last remaining stock item (silver, display model) pending price match. I give him my printout showing Digidirect's price and he goes away to check with his franchisee. When he comes back:

      HN: looks like they've gone out of stock as well

      ME: yes, that's online. I rang the Brisbane store this morning and confirmed they had stock in the store.

      HN: we couldn't match that price, that's well under our cost… they probably source them from China

      ME: err… Australian warranty…

      HM: with them, yeah

      ME: no, Australian manufacturer warranty - you can look on their website

      He has trouble finding the item on the website (my guess: possibly because it's no longer available online). I show him the page on my phone, refreshed to make sure it's still valid, and end up giving him the full URL so he can pull it up on his computer. I invite him to call the store, as I had done, to confirm they do indeed have physical stock. He prints out the page, goes to the manager/franchisee, and comes back a while later:

      HN: sorry closest we can do is $396 and even that's below our cost

      ME: so I can't buy it and then immediately claim a refund of the difference under your best price guarantee?

      HN: it would have to be an advertised price

      ME: it is an advertised price

      HN: it's not on their website

      ME: it is on their website, you've just seen it

      HN: only on a link, which says sale ends Sunday… it's an older link

      ME: sale ends Sunday means it's still valid

      HN: price match is not applicable on clearance lines

      ME: does it say clearance?

      HN: it's a clearance line, a discontinued model… (looks again at the computer screen) it says sale ends Sunday, on an old link

      ME: they're having 10% off store wide until Sunday

      HN: without me going directly to that link… it would need to be an advertised price

      ME: so you're saying that (what you're seeing) is not advertised?

      HN: well if you go to their website you can't find it can you? If I give the website to head office they won't be able to find it, it's a discontinued link, so it's a discontinued price.

      ME: it's not discontinued because it's still valid, as confirmed when I rang them this morning.

      HN: well I'm sorry I've spoken to my franchisee and there's not a lot I can do.

      Well, can't say I didn't try… would have bought it to qualify for the AMEX/Westfield promo. Another lost sale.

        396 is below their cost. What a complete lie, otherwise they need new negotiators working in their buying team.

          Not really a lie. HN 'cost' price is higher than other retailers because the supplier has to pay a rebate of 16% back to head office.

          Digidirect probably got them at a special price as well to take the last units from Olympus to clear them out. Olympus will probably pay HN back some money to clear any remaining units shortly.

          Yeah, he may have been not entirely truthful. If the supplier price is falling I'll bet that HN has negotiated itself price protection in the form of a rebate. They were extremely good at this when I dealt with them!

          One of their biggest concerns is being stuck with inventory; hence they won’t stock anything that they can’t return back to the manufacturer. This gives them leverage to say “we’ll just return all of them if we don’t get rebated back for the price drop”, and they’re very aggressive at this.

          Isn't "cost price" one of those terms with an ambiguous / flexible definition, to be used like a joker/wildcard when you need to try to trump your opponent? I'm sure there's often non-trivial divergence between what a retailer means when they say "cost price", and what the term is meant/hoped to conjure in the minds of the consumer.

          In any case, whatever their cost price may be and however they choose to define/use it, the fact that a competitor is selling below their cost is not, in and of itself, a valid exclusion for their stated best price guarantee.

          Not really. cameras normally get price protection, almost never (i am sure there is the occasional exception) returned to the supplier. Some small stuff gets returned, not cameras, computers ect.

          Source: i ran the camera section at a store for several years, was also a supplier to HN for several years.

          Yep, I should have said electrical, that's where i dealt with the HN buyers.

          Stuff is rarely returned because it's easier for the supplier to pay HN to keep the stock, otherwise the supplier has to take it back and sell it at the cheaper price anyway. If anything did come back from HN often it came back opened, parts missing, SN on box and item miss-matched and had to be tested, re-packaged and sold as refurbished. Further costs to the supplier, put HN in a great position to get their price protection rebate.

          The actual wording in their policy about excluding discontinued items is (emphasis mine):

          6.The Best Price Guarantee does not apply where:
          […]
          (h) the lower price has been discounted by the competitor on the basis that the product is a display stock only, end of line, seconds, refurbished/repaired lines, ex demo, limited quantity, clearance, trade or factory seconds, second hand or similar;

          I think this point is arguable because HN are imputing the basis, rather than it being clearly stated as you would expect with every other condition in that list.

          Their attempt to claim that the price is "not advertised" is also debatable. But given that I half expected the initial query to bomb out on the colour difference, there was probably little to be gained from continuing the dialogue.

      You get a much better sensor for $50 more! I wouldn't even consider the epm1,just not worth it. If the epm1 was under $100 it's a different story

      Image quality is essentially identical to the OMD EM5 which is much more expensive. No viewfinder and 3axis IBIS instead of 5 are the main differences.

      The pm1 has the sensor from the older pen series. Still a decent camera but the PM2 is much better.

      XZ1 has a nice lens but it isnt interchangable. Also has a much smaller sensor.

      XZ1 'photo' looks like it was drawn with a crayon. PM2 blows the xz1 away in image quality at anything over iso 400 really.

    Now I'm looking for the zuiko 45mm f1.8 lens. Is dwi still the cheapest at $299? I'm guessing that they're grey imports and therefore not eligible for the cashback?

      DWI has $10 off code rmn2014 so it works out to $289 (plus a few dollars if you want insurance) I just ordered from them and received the lens 1 business day later - no complaints from me!

        Got it at JB for $351, lol. After cashback $300 which is same as DWI but AUS stock.
        Got them to pricematch digidirect, but they didn't check that the $350 price was POST-Cashback.
