Transit Melbourne, my iPhone app for navigating Melbourne's metro rail network, is free until the end of day today (then 50% off normal price until Sunday 18 May).

Notable features (why I think it's useful):
- calculate the quickest way to get from station x to station y (eg. Whether there's an express you should catch, or a place you should change train to get there faster - particularly to avoid or catch a city loop service)
- calculations performed completely on-device, no need for a working data connection
- add frequent journeys as favourites
- journey reminders, so you don't miss the departure

    Although this is great to avoid data usage and/or no connection issues… Does this mean that there are no live updates to service changes and/or delays?

    Edit: What we really would like/need is something like London's TFL site. It includes Bus, Overground, Underground, walking, etc.

      Unfortunately that is the case, the live update data isn't made available for Melbourne trains (there's no API) so there's no real way to obtain this information.

      When/if the data becomes available, I plan to look into it incorporating it over the top - so that it uses it if you have a network connection, but it also still works (based on static timetable info) if you don't. Or at least that's the theory!

        The Train Trapper app for Android is good for this. Crowd sourcing - if your train is delayed at Flinders St, you tell the app, The app then notifies everyone else down the line. Most of the time, it tells me about delays.

        If you did the same for iOS (Maybe get in touch with the developer and make some kind of shared API?) you could have an amazing service between you. It's win-win for both of you, I can't see why not.

    Hi. Like the look of the app but not sure the logic it uses for trips eg vic park to McKinnon stations at 4.30pm. If I have min interchange time of 1 min it give me the quickest trip as number one option which is great. The second option though has me changing at Flinders, South Yarra and Caulfield when all need to do is change at Flinders and then Richmond (with better interchange time). Also if any temp timetables are released does the app automatically ask you to update to those?

      Hi Dazzman,

      Yep - temporary timetables (e.g. Easter, Queens Birthday) are supported. When the timetables for those days are available you'll receive a prompt in the app to download them - the app will automatically use them on the appropriate days.

      Regarding your query from Victoria Park to McKinnon - I had a quick check and believe it's working as intended.
      - If you do the Flinders + Richmond combo, you arrive at 5.32pm (as per PTV journey planner).
      - If you follow the steps in Transit Melbourne (inserting an extra interchange) you actually arrive 9 minutes earlier (5.23pm).

      The app focuses on quickest arrival - rather than minimising interchanges. So I believe it is working ok, but will investigate further over the weekend.

      Well, ad supported. But if you use it regularly and are too tightarse to pay the hard working bloke a $1, then yeah - I guess that's free (Pay the man his dollar - you owe him at least a coffee for making such a useful app).
