      $94.05????? TYPO I suppose!!

  • +1

This lens I suppose will not Auto focus with all the Nikon DSLRs! For bodies like D3xxx or D5xxx or earlier D40 or D60, you need AF-S lens.

    • +1

It'll work, just that the AF won't as there's no motor to drive it? You can always use those focus points to gauge focus manually anyway.

      • Sorry for the mistake earlier, I made the changes in my comment.

    • Autofocus is the most overrated technology since electrically adjustable car seats.

      • +3

        You're nuts…

        • -7

You have an SLR, spin the wheel until it looks sharp, it takes about half a second which is the same time the autofocus would take.

        • +4

          You're discriminating against the lazy.

    • +1

The auto focus will only work if your Nikon DSLR supports screw-drive autofocus - basically, all full frame Nikon DSLRs and for APS-C you need D7xxx, D300 or D90.

  • What does f1.8d means?

    • +1

Aperture number or focal ratio of 1.8

      More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number

In general lower the f-number the better and cost increases. Of course there are other factors influencing the price. 50mm lens are said to be easier to make and hence priced lesser than other focal length prime lenses.

D is the series. Launched in early 2000s, I suppose they were targeting the DSLR market.

    • +5

      It means bokeh central

      • Ha Ha, next question is going to be what is Bokeh? just be prepared!

      • -1

Is that where some you can pick some nice Japanese food? Sorry my mind is out of focus after a few sake and a I am a bit blur at the moment.

        • Ah geez why the neg vote? Lol. ;)

    • f1.8 D - f1.8 means maximum aperture is 1.8. D (distance) means the lens can provide focus distance information to the camera.

  • Very compact lens and underated lens. I love the rubber hood that you have to buy optionaly as it does not come with one. I regret selling it to offset my Samyang 35mm 1.4 lens.

    • How is its image quality compared to the Samyang's? Obviously, the viewing angle and DOF are different. I have this lens but I felt that it's very soft wide open and I have to stop down to f4.5 to get the desired sharpness.

      • If you have af fine tune function on your camera you can get it very sharp at f1.8.

        • I believe you because last month or 2, JB also had the sale of this lens for about 97$, I grabbed 1 and compared with my current lens and the results were the same softness. Unfortunately, I don't think my old D90 has this fine tune feature.

        • Yeah I think the function was introduced in D7000. I would not buy a camera without this function. Saved me a lot of frustration with third party lenses.

      • sorry, just read this msg. In terms of image quality, the samyang is far superior than this lens. Very sharp from edge to edge on a full frame and the bokeh is just awesome. The only con is that it's heavy(12 glass elements), manual focus(not really a con if you are used to it) and the price compared to this nifty fifty. But for the same spec for a auto focus nikon 35mm 1.4G, it's a third of the price only and image quality is on par or even better, subject to a debate of course :)

Great little lens for a great price. Had one for years and it's super sharp.

  • This is an amazing lens. I have it on my camera almost exclusively. Although it is fixed 50mm, the quality of the lens and the fact is it f/1.8 really makes it a catch.

  • Hey, is this lens worth getting as it sounds like a good price. Right now I am using a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II. What is the difference between these 2 nikon lenses? Thanks

    • This one is a prime lens and yours is a zoom lens. This one has a wider aperture than yours. Also it doesn't have an autofocus motor so unless you have a body that can do the autofocus you will need to manual focus this one.

      • Well I am using a D5200 body, so what is the difference in picture quality of those 2 lenses?

        • Generally a prime lens is sharper at 50mm than your zoom lens is at the same focal length as that's all it's designed to shoot at. Picture quality should be slightly better but maybe not enough for the average person to notice or worry about. I bought this lense the last time it was on sale and one of the best things about it is the small size, it's great having a light and compact lense on your camera instead of wielding a cannon.

        • Yeah thanks for the info. My lens is not even a cannon, it is a bloody telescope :P

        • You cant use "D" lens on a 5200 body for auto focus, you can use it for manual focus only. Your camera body needs a screw drive motor for it to auto focus the lens. Camera's like D7000, D700 etc has this. Something to put in mind when buying "D" lens. If you want autofocus in you lens, go for the "G" lens type.

  • I have one, it's amazing. Super sharp.

  • I have both the 1.8d and 1.8g and find myself using the 1.8d more. It is smaller and more convenient. Not so good for video. The focus ring is too thin.

  • Ken Rockwell thinks this lens is good value for $. See his review here:
