Nikon AF 50mm f1.8D - JB Hi-Fi $97 Pickup + $4.95 Delivery

440

Cheapest deal (Australian or Grey importer) for the older Nikon 50mm 1.8D. Superseded by the 1.8G (and of course the f1.4 if you are willing to pay that amount) but still a very solid lens and a good way to try photography with a prime lens.

  • Noob question, will this be okay on a DX? Or is this a full frame lens?

    • +2

Yes, will be fine on a DX. Only the effective focal length you will get is multiplied, I can't remember on the top of my head but this 50mm would be a 75mm (50 * 1.5). Hence mackaxx's preference below, the 35mm would be closer to the 50mm on a DX camera :)

      • But close to 80mm / 85mm "portrait" len

It won't auto focus on lower end Nikons, like the D3000 and D5000 series.

For those models, you are better off getting an AF-S lens (as someone has pointed out a 35mm makes more sense, and Nikon sells a nice AF-S 35mm for DX cameras).

If you have something with an internal focusing motor, (D7000, D90, FX (all I think) and others) this becomes an option.

      • will this one OK for D200?

        • Works great on my D200 - sharpest lens I have for it and cheapest lens I have for it!

    • works great on my D90. more shallow depth of field than the 35mm 1.8. nice for portraits

      • Thanks a lot bheart

Great price, prefer the 35mm for a non full frame camera

  • Will it OK for V1?

    • No. Different mount, and there is no internal focus motor.

    • If you have an FT1 adapter, then you can use this with the V1
Although no focus motor on the V1 so would be manual focus only on that.

Recently discovered a little icon that shows when it's in focus, makes manual focusing much easier!

I have the V1 and adapter, but had to get the adapter from overseas.

  • This is a great lens. I have owned it as well as the 1.4 d and 1.8 g. Of all three I think the autofocus on this was the fastest (on bodies with a motor). This will work on full frame or DX as will the other two. If you have a D3000 or D5000 as well as any other lower end models it will not autofocus. This requires a motor in the body (D7000, D600, D90 etc) if you want to use autofocus.

Anyways, I strongly recommend this lens, great value for money, very sharp, reasonably fast.

    • So it wont work with D3200?

      • It won't auto-focus on the D3200, but will work perfectly fine with manual focus.

I think for the older cameras D40, D50 and D60 don't have internal motors either.

D70+ have an internal auto-focus motor.

I might get this as although I have a D80, my next camera will have an FX sensor

        Pax

        • D50 and D70 have motor. I don't think the D40 does though.

      • D40, D40x and D60 don't have the internal focus motor.

  • I was looking for a cheap and good prime for my X-E1 from the DigiDirect Deal. I though this will be good ….until I find the adapter will cost $200…. WTF!!

  • I have a nikon d60 - found this on the interweb …

Yes, the nikon d60 does have an autofocus motor, however, it only works when you have an AF-S lens attached. AF lenses won't autofocus ona d60, the only lenses you can choose that autofocus are AF-S lenses. So if you plan on autofocusing AF lenses, you need to spend more on the nikon d80, or the nikon d300, which can autofocus any AF lens ( made for a nikon camera )

D7000 and up will handle this lens nicely. Sold this lens used for $90 just last week.

      • yeah, this is a really good deal. Sold a grey import one of these for $100 last year used.

        • bought the F1.4 50mm for $260 .. used in 2011

        • nice… i managed to get my 1.4G on kogan a year ago for $359 :)

  • great price/great lenses for local store.

  • wow awesome find! Thanks OP.

  • Super lens. Great price.

  • Will this be good on a Sony a7 with the appropriate adapter? Will the aperture ring work? Couldn't find any reviews on this combo online.

    • It will, the only disclaimer I'd add is that you could get a good f1.4 manual lens off Ebay for cheaper. Lenses that were designed to be used as manual lenses are generally easier to use that way.

  • Excellent price for good lens.

  • It's a great lens. I'm tempted to get one to replace the one I have worn out… but I'm tempted to get the 1.4G

  • I have been a long time lurker but wanted to sign up to say thanks very much for posting this. I went to the Prahan store in Melbourne and picked one up straight away, they have 4 left now.

    Thanks mate!

  • Great lens I picked one up from JB as well as a d610 $1925 Chadstone

  • This won't work for the d5200?

    • Only the autofocus won't. You can manually focus or go for the 50mm 1.8 G

  • +1

Thanks man! This 50mm just become my favorite lens. I like how compact it is, the IQ, and good bokeh for portraits. I have been using this lens pretty much exclusively over the past month.
