Reviews
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Telephoto Zoom Lens includes canon's propriety image stabilization, which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 shutter speed steps to support handheld use in low-light conditions.

An STM stepping focus motor is also integrated into the lens' design to provide smooth, quiet, and fast focusing performance that is ideally-suited to video applications as well as tracking moving subjects. The rear focusing system, high-speed CPU, and an enhanced AF algorithm also contribute to quickened overall AF speeds. Full-time manual focus is also supported to permit fine-tuning of focus even while working in AF modes. Additionally, the front lens section does not rotate during focusing to better facilitate the use of polarizing filters.

The optical construction of the lens employs one ultra-low dispersion glass element to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while also enhancing contrast and clarity. Optimized lens coatings have also been applied to ensure color fidelity by countering the effects of lens flare and ghosting.

  • Thanks. Looks like a good deal. If you do not have a full format DSLR this lens is a great choice. Great value for money. Read the review on www.kenrockwell.com

  • Are these worth $250?

    • +2

      Different lens though, no STM.

    Crap lens.

    • No. Not Really.

  • Unless you're really keen on 55+, I find 18-135 or 18-200 mm far more useful for day to day shooting (inc travel etc).

If you're really interested for a specific purpose, that's when a prime lense is optimal. FWIW.

    • +1

For day to day yes but considering they are $400.00 and $530.00 respectively. This is kinda great.

  • You can pick up these (or the older variations) for as cheap as $60-70 used and $100-110 new on eBay.

Given it's the standard second lens in the twin lens kit for the consumer-grade Canon dslr kits, it's everywhere and there are plenty of people looking to offload them.

Also agree with the sentiments above- unless you specifically require the longer range there are better walkaround lens available that are slightly more expensive- the Canon 18-135mm being the one I started out with. And if you want great value for money (albeit with much range sacrificed), the Tamron 17-50mm/2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm/2.8 are great options for $295 and $359 respectively. Neither have IS/VC (image stabiliser tech) however, but are super sharp for their price, and are by far the cheapest f/2.8 zooms you can get.

HOWEVER, regardless of what expensive and fancy gear you own, it is ultimately the skill and artistic view of the photog which will determine the output. So just get the best you can afford (and that suits your needs) and shoot away :)

  • The STM version has a much better build and is optically superior for the price.

STM is the way to go.

I went into Brisbane store and they'd sold out but I paid upfront to backorder one (to get the sale price). Said it could be 2 to 4 weeks. Worth it for the price. These go for over $300 from HK

  • Have one of these BNIB to sell in Brisbane if anyone is interested for $248. PM me.
