Jackson/C10 ADSL2 Inline Filter Splitter, on Clearance at Coles ~$9

150

Jackson / c10 an adsl/adsl2/adsl2+ inline filter/splitter, recommended on whirlpool forums, is on clearance at two coles shops near my house.
i bought one for $9.01 which I think is a pretty good price for a good quality adsl2 filter/splitter.
Of course now that i'm home - i realised my naked adsl will get trned on tomorrow , and I won't need a filter at all.

  • Nice work. Sure I've seen these at my coles for cheaper….I picked up my C10s from Kmart or DSE a while ago for around $3.

    • Only ADSL filters from DSE are $20 or more…

  • I have a central splitter from way back in the days before ADSL2… would I benefit from installing this? Can it be installed in conjunction with the existing central splitter?

    • Are you referring to a central splitter installed on your premises by an electrician?

  • You only need a splitter if you want to connect a telephone onto the same line which has ADSL. You do not need a splitter to connect your ADSL modem. The splitter sits between your telephone and the line.

  • Can someone explain why naked DSL does not require a splitter?

Because you do not have a PSTN (traditional phone connection) line with naked DSL. Assuming you don't have any phone devices plugged into your phone line (since they will be pointless and won't work anyway) other than the modem, you won't have anything interfering with your DSL signals. Hence, you do not need a splitter.

Normal ADSL phone lines carry audio voice and digital ADSL (AKA "high pitched screaming noises"). An ADSL filter filters out the "high pitched screaming noises" so that you can have a normal conversation on the line.

Naked ADSL lines don't carry audio voice, just "high pitched etc". Any voice calls you make are converted to digital ADSL, rather than staying as analogue voice. Since you never just listen to the Naked DSL phone line by plugging a phone straight in - you always plug it into a digital box that coverts the "high pitched etc" into voice and back - there's no need to filter out the screaming etc. Even if you did plug a normal phone straight into a Naked DSL line, there's nothing at the telephone exhange listening for analogue phone calls (that's the "naked" bit - no voice, all digital), so it wouldn't do you any good.
