Hmm, I wonder if they are clearing out the MotoG in prep for the new 4G edition?

    • +1

In the UK the legacy Moto G will sell alongside the newly announced Moto E and Moto G with LTE. No idea what will happen in Oz as we only 1 of the 3 original Moto G variants (8GB dual sim) not the once we wanted (16GB single sim).

      • +2

        Downvotes?

For pointing out that, particularly in australia, the 4G, microSD version is likely to be a better bet and supplant the 3G version?

Anyone out there looking for a cheap but acceptable smartphone is well advised to wait - the MotoE will be cheaper for 3G and the new 4G MotoG will be a better match for the 4G australian networks.

Boxee for $77 is a bargain, just keep in mind they are End of Life.

    • +2

Boxee software got sold out to Samsung, which is why it is EOL, and will most likely lose support soon.

    • +1

Even so, this is an amazing price for the Boxee!!

      • +2

I agree. Best media player I've used. I'm buying another one now… just because.

        • +1

boxee box is not perfect but at this price it's alright.
One issue I noticed is the slowwwwwww response when you want to quit a video. It's very annoying when you watch TV shows.

        • Haven't had this issue, when I quit, it's almost instant.

Have you updated to the Boxee Hacks firmware? They made it a lot faster, but even when I was on official firmware, didn't have this problem.

        • I use boxes with xbmc. Works fine. $77 is a bargain but yes EOL.

    • +1

It's getting close to 4 years old now and was officially discontinued 1.5 years ago, is it really a bargain when there are newer/cheaper/supported options out there?

      • +1

Not sure what's better than this for the price?

Boxee Hacks is keeping this current with frequent updated firmware. It can now run XMBC.

For local play via USB of your media files, there's nothing better.

For online streaming, it's probably not the best option.

        • +3

Raspberry Pi always comes to mind. With case, psu and small sd card you're looking at $50 for a media player which is properly supported on XBMC, is lower power and has 1080p 3D playback.

        • So the boxee can't play files on a network drive via wireless?

What's a good option out there for a bedroom unit that's easy to use for the wife?

        • It can stream, I'm talking about services like Hulu, Netflix etc. It's not its strong suit.

        • What's a good option out there for a bedroom unit that's easy to use for the wife?

          • I am sure you can work out what she wants in the bedroom?
        • I haven't used Raspberry Pi, when I was researching what's better than the Boxee, almost everyone preferred the Boxee over Raspberry Pi due to weak hardware.

Comments mentioned it was slow to respond, slow list updating (30 seconds to load 500 files), is low on CPU power. They mentioned video rendering is mostly fine but didn't expect super-high bitrate movies to play stutter-free.

Just to mention, Boxee plays 1080p 3D playback without stutter too.

I have used the Boxee for 4 years and I have never had an issue playing any files (always smooth, via USB). It's fast to load up over 1,000 files with covers (loading bar spins for 3-5 seconds), full background overlays etc.

At full price $249, hard to recommend, but at $77 with Boxee Hacks supporting it, people who want to play local media files via USB, it's hard to beat with what it does. XBMC will get better with future firmware updates.

        • Boxee is pretty much plug and play.

Open box, connect via HDMI, plug in HDD via USB and select file to play.

        • +1

There were definitely issues early on for the raspberry pi when it was new, but it's been stable for quite some time now. The latest xbmc update was focused mainly on decreasing the load time on viewing large libraries, and increased 3d support.

It'll play the killa sample without dropping frames, afaik the only real limitation is it won't play Hi10 encoded files, which very few media players support anyway.

Didn't know the boxee can now do 3d, it's not listed in it's specs.

        • +1

          Thank you justmiike,
I had a look and the Gotham build of XBMC looks amazing!
          I found the instructions here:
          http://boxeed.in/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=263
          you rock!

        • Yes, no problem
Only limitation is your wifi speed

        • would this be fine to watch local catch up tv i.e. channel 7,9,10 abc etc?

        • +1

I see, so it's probably better now.

Boxee can't play Hi10 directly, but can through UPnP.

Yeah, it has a few settings for 3D too, it supported 3D via a firmware update in 2010, so that's probably why it's not included in the specs.

        • AFAIK, raspberry pi cannot play high quality MPEG2 (ie. complex DVDs) without acceleration and requires purchase of license to do so.

      • What would you recommend?
I currently have the WDTV live. How does the Boxee compare to this in terms of file playability?

        • +1

Are there any particular files your WDTV isn't playing? File compatibility will be similar, but it will depend on which model WDTV you have. Older WDTV's had issues with a few media types.
Main advantage of the Boxee over the WDTV is a better interface and social media connectivity.
Depending on what you actually want it for, I'd recommend a raspberry pi running openelec or a chromecast. Or if you're in the Apple garden, the ATV3 can be had for a few dollars more than the boxee when it's on sale.

        • So is the boxee is suitable player to play media from a network drive (I have the hp n40l microserver with lots of media files) and can it play mp4, mkv and rmvb-which most media player doesn't support? My brother has heaps of files in rmvb format

        • the default Boxee OS and the XBMC you can hack on top of it have class leading compatibility. keep in mind that if you have a surround setup with only RCA inputs that you won't have luck with separate connectors for each channel, despite support for 5.1 decoding.

        • Hm, rmvb format is interesting. From what I gather, Boxee didn't support it. Apparently there's issues with XBMC supporting it too, plays it, but not perfectly.

I haven't used rmvb format before, so don't know, but plays mp4 and mkv.

        • Are there any particular files your WDTV isn't playing?

No, the WDTV live streaming seems to play BD files off MakeMKV without issues. The rest are mp4s from DVDs. I was after a cheap 2nd media player for another room in the house so that there is no hassle in moving the players around. A friend also likes my WDTV so he might get the Boxee as well.

    • Boxee is not only EOL, its out of stock.

My LG G2 battery drained so much after kitkat update. Anyone have similar experience?

    • +1

Mine has been fine, but it has off days. And by that I mean I only get a day out of it… lol

    • Yeah I've noticed a fall in battery performance. Didn't click that it might be from the update. Might have to look into it now.

      • If its anything like my other android devices, the first few days it'll be bad but then it improves.

    • Used to be able to last 1.5 days between charging before update.
Nowadays It only last for 22hours…

  • +1

These prices available in store as well?

  • I have all my movies on my iMac which is wifi. If I get a Boxee for the bedroom and connect it via ethernet or wifi, will it play all my movie formats, show cover art and description with our any buffer issues?

Or should I get a Apple TV, will that do what I want it too?

    • It will play all your movie formats, show cover art, descriptions without buffer issues if you connect via ethernet.

Over Wi-Fi though, it's only as good as your network. HD content will likely buffer, unless your router can take the load, SD content will play fine.

One thing to mention for Boxee is it can't play DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD audio properly (it does play the sound, but will drop out randomly) due to lack of hardware driver update which will never happen. Personally, I never had this problem as my files are AC3 or DTS (or output as LPCM).

Can't comment on Apple TV, never used it.

      • Over Wi-Fi though, it's only as good as your network.

Very debatable.. I had to test Boxee when it first came out for retail setups. Our in-store wireless system was fine for other systems to stream 1080p, but the Boxee wouldn't cut it. Saying that thought, this was a long time ago. It wouldn't surprise me if software updates resolved a lot of the performance issues.

This is where the RaspBMC solution would win out - you get to choose the WiFi option. If you want a better WiFi (range, power, speed) then just purchase one!

    • Not sure this helps but I have a Mac Mini downstairs and use Plex (or Air Video) on either Iphone or Ipad to stream to Apple TV in bedroom. That seems to work flawlessly for my needs.

Not used Boxee, it might remove the need for the middle device.

(note- my iphone and ipad are work devices, I am not THAT into apple)

  • Thank you Op.
Bought a Boxee for $77 - delivered at only $5 - no pick up in my area.
    Thanks again.

  • thanks webtherapist… o.O

  • Just used my $40 GC on the Boxee, $42 delivered because no stores near me had it available for pick-up.

I'm assuming I should read up on XBMC/other firmware alternatives?

  • One Boxee ordered. Needed also to do delivery, but that's alright. Should do well to avoid the issues of my NAS not being able to transcode video to play on my Samsung TV/BD devices.

    Cheers to you webtherapist!

  • can't see the LG G2 on TGG website for sale of the price $426.30 mentioned.

  • Can you still download the latest Boxee Box Firmware? Also will the Metadate for the movies we have on our hard drives still work or is that gonna be turned off?

Just seeing if we really need to upgrade to XBMC or can we still run the official firmware but still get the cover art and movie description for our library

    • Not sure if Boxee turned off the repo to download latest firmware.

But, I would still install the latest Boxee Hacks because it improves on speed and adds quite a bit to the experience.

You don't have to have XBMC.

How is your Metadata set up? Boxee has its own requirements for that.

  • Boxee gone from the site and not found with a search. OzBargained?

    • Interestingly, so is the G2.

    • Looks like it has been OzBargained. When you do a search for boxee the search auto-complete drop down lists the item but it redirects you straight back to the home page.

    • Disappointed at missing out. I have one already but want a spare to "hack" with 3rd party firmware etc. Couldn't bear the thought of compromising my working unit, I came close to bricking it once before. Anyone that bought one and gets buyer remorse or doesn't like theirs, let me know, I'd be interested.

  • Yeah, Boxee sold out.

I mean it was always going to at that price.

Hope you guys and girls enjoy it, it's a great device at that price!!

  • I've got a bit of buyer's remorse (pending further research!) on the Boxee. Will offer it here (at the price I paid) if it comes to selling it.

    • Buyer's remorse wins. If anyone in Perth is interested (pickup), let me know.

      • I'll take it. Drop me a message.
        Cheers

4 years later and Boxee Box still the best home cinema solution to be found.

    • +1

$200 it wasn't the best home cinema solution, but at $77 it certainly is. lol.
For $200 you can get nicer ones than this. For example NUC, Microserver or a custom pc.

  • Can anyone post their receipt/invoice for boxee so we can try our luck price matching.

  • Is Boxee sale over? Could not find any….

    • +1

They were never going to last at $77

  • thanks OP, might get the Moto G for mum

    • you're welcome, I would like a Moto G too if can get rid of my iphone 4s lol

  • Just got a call and they couldn't fulfil my Boxee order and are giving a full refund…stupid TGG doing a DS on us.

  • Best price for boxee…i think I bought it for upwards of $150 a year back
