Can you book in advance? I have a Monday morning 9:30am international flight, what are my chances of getting a free ride to the airport at 6am?

    • You can't but I'd say there's decent odds from the the inner city

    • Take SkyBus from Southern Cross station.

      $18 one way

  • In the app, Melbourne doesn't show any UberX vehicles :-/

    • Have you used UberX before? It's showing up in my app here.

I heard they are blocking it for people that haven't used it before because the Dept of Transport kept fining the drivers after signing up and riding.

    • From the blog post:

Demand for uberX has been overwhelming so we’re adding new riders gradually – there may be a slight delay after you sign up.

      It's a staged/rolling release thing :)

  • Hello. Care to explain what uber rider sells? Are they like a taxi company?

Uber connects drivers to … passengers - they themselves are not a company that has drivers, etc.

In Melbourne and Sydney, you have UberBLACK, which are the higher end 'Hire Cars'/private drivers. Sydney also has the option of a regular taxi (so, Uber works much like goCatch, but without a surcharge - but a $2 taxi booking fee instead).

Most recently and most controversially, uberX was launched in Sydney and Melbourne - these are regular people, like you and me, that have the Uber app on their phone, drive people around in their 'regular' own car, and then get paid by Uber to do it.

    alternatively:

    ABL1314 - $20 Off First Ride (expires 3rd October)

  • I read somewhere using a unaccredited private vehicle thats not approved by the victorian government for the purpose of hire or reward can see fines up to $1,700? and apparently theres been undercover cops already using this service to bust people that use their own cars.

    is this true?

i mean i was thinking of jumping on the bandwagon and get some extra cash but last thing i want is a fine at the end of a trip.

    • sorry if I'm being ambiguous but i mean if the governing body here in victoria already has a law that says this is illegal…
      why is it been promoted?

      • Seems like an interesting way to advertise.

Does this mean uber as a company isn't taking any responsibilities at all for the repercussions of the drivers that actually are driving unaccredited with clients obtained using their mobile platform, yet at the same time are using these drivers as a form of advertising and business expansion since theres not enough accredited cars to promote the "uber experience"?

so again, if i decided to drive someone somewhere "for free" as uberx. how would i get paid?

client -> über -> me? (legal?)
        as oppose to
        client -> me? (illegal?)

  • Uber app crashes on Android when I try to do a fare quote. Uber-fail.

Needed to get home quickly today and called an uberx service, perfect timing and best of all free! limited to one ride per day up to the value of $90 worth during the Mon - Wed promo period. A bit hit and miss with availability but had a great experience today. My driver was super professional and my ride was a new black merc.
