  • ..But what -is- it? Some sort of crowd sourced chauffeur service?

    • +4

In a way it is, it is the chauffeur cars that mostly do airport transfers and when they are between jobs they pick up the odd fare via uber. The app shows the nearest vehicle which you can then book. Prices are similar to a taxi (maybe a bit more) but obviously much nicer vehicles such as HOLDEN CAPRICE, CHRYSLER 300C BMW 7-SERIES, Mercedes etc.

      Base fare is $6.50, BELOW 18 KM/H $0.75 PER MINUTE, ABOVE 18 KM/H $2.50 PER KILOMETER, MIN FARE $15.00
CANCELLATION FEE $10.00. There is surge pricing during peak times such as Friday afternoons.

You set up a credit card in your account so when you arrive you can just get out without having to worry about paying. A tax invoice is emailed to you.

    • I's a "request tool, not a transportation carrier" to quote their terms of service.

It's like calling a taxi, except where taxis are expensive because of all the police checks, driving tests, vehicle safety checks etc they have to go through; Uber apparently let anybody pick up fares. Like Crazy Taxi, or Grand Theft Auto.

They do claim their drivers meet "local regulations", but I'm not sure there are any regulations anywhere that use the words "Uber driver" - they're too new.

      • +3

I think you will find that the uber vehicles used are far safer and well presented and the drivers are much more polite and fresher smelling than any licenced taxi that has been through all the checks.

      • personal town cars service have been oversea for years went live in new york we town car company that u would just call and they will come pick u up. cheep safe can cleaner then taxi in new york.

        • -1

As a seasoned traveller, if it has to do with getting somewhere in good tI've while paying the appropriate fare, the first rule is to "take the meter"

Getting in any car with no meter is a risk I am not willing to take. They aren't all bad, but by ditching the regulations that are there to protect you and the driver you are putting yourself out there. When the car take you somewhere you don't want to go, or charges you an excessive fee, you aren't going to care if you are in a luxury car. If the driver turns out to be a tosser, eg threaten you etc, you may not see a license number or car number to report them.

Also keep in mind any taxi asking you to not take the meter would be just ripping themselves off, and who is going to do that? Definitely not someone in business, and it's the driver who will know what a good deal for him is a lot better than you will

On top of that, why wait for a town car 3 suburbs away when a cab is around the corner?

        • The metering is done by the app, the driver has no say in it

        • My statement was meant to be more of a response etc the previous poster about his experience in NY. However it still stands that the app is never going to give you as good a deal as a taxi meter, as evidenced by the people who are working out their fares in comparison to taxis,.

      • +1

        Like Crazy Taxi
You say that like it's a bad thing!

Thanks for the explanation Marcus, website was a bit vague

      • That is a pack of lies jong.
They either use licensed hire cars or taxis if you order a taxi - it is illegal for anyone else to accept fares for transport. That would be the local regulations, among a number of conditions the must comply with to do so.
Why would you make up something like that? Are you a competitor?

    • Thank you to the person who joined using my referral - it is the first time (despite being in the 1st few on the wiki) and I am extremely grateful - my carer/fiancee and I will love it on our next holiday, they carry our bags - it makes it so much easier and less painful.

I cannot say thank you enough for using my referral, whatever kind soul it was, thank you so very much.

Thank you so very very very very much
      bless you

  • I am still not sure how this works.

But the flat rate fee from Tullamarine Airport to Melboune CBD is $80, about $30 more than a normal taxi
being a OZBer, I take the skybus
From Tullamarine to South East Suburb is $95 which can be same as normal taxi depending on how south east it is.

    • +14

A true OZber would have taken the 901.

      • I find 100000000s of people in SE surburbs not knowing about 901 !!!
They come to city via Train and take SkyBus , last I have seen someone from Frankston where 901 originates :D

      • +3

A true OZber would have taken the 901

I beg to differ. A true ozbargainer rides in style for FREE

      • I live near southern cross station.

The 901 route looks like scenic tour of Victoria, going through farmland before hitting the airport

    • From Tullamarine to South East Suburb is $95 which can be same as normal taxi depending on how south east it is.

fyi uber's southeast flat rate zone boundaries are glenhuntly rd in the south and burke rd in the east :)

  • If you want to share the love on referrals here's the referral page in wiki:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/uber_private_driver_20_ref…

    • thanks but was/is mentioned in deal description :)

    • Pick me, pick me! :D

  • Applied the ABL1314, showing:

ABL1314 ABL Fan! ($20 off your first ride with Uber) 10/ 2/13 09:49:45 PM PDT 10/ 2/14 09:49:46 PM PDT

Balance has no change, so not sure if $20 will be deducted first on the first ride.

    • Does it have a city restriction . If it does should show next to credit in promotions section . Could u post a screen shot

      • mel+syd only :)

      • Here it is, only showing in promotion tab, not in the dashboard.

        Screenshot

        • Yep should be fine. No geographic restriction . If it had a restriction it would say in the table where promotions are listed

    • +1

ride vouchers are deducted before (referral) credits :)

      • If so then I reckon $40 credit should be far more than enough for a ride from Wollicreek to Int'l Airport.

  • Another great post thanks OP.

Always happy to share great freebies with my fellow ozbargainers

BEWARE your preferred TAXI Gratuity is automatically setup as 20% of metered fare, and will be applied to any future TAXI trips..

You can change it to 0% on payment page

  • Love Uber. Costs about the same as a Silver Service Taxi, but way nicer (Although I have to admit being disappointed when I get a Caprice instead of a BMW). My favourite driver offers free water and cashews which is nice.

    • you should ask the driver what his normal fixed rate is, you never know it might be cheaper then the uber meter, but only thing i see that might increase the over all price is the standard surcharge card fee of 10% used by most taxis and hire cars

      • you should ask the driver what his normal fixed rate is, you never know it might be cheaper then the uber meter

yes, for limos/uberblack, i've found non-uber fares can be lower than paying via uber :)

    • Love Uber. Costs about the same as a Silver Service Taxi

depends if you pay a booking fee or credit card surcharge with a taxi - taxi tariffs are lower than uberblack :)

    • +1

A silver service taxi costs the same as any other taxi

  • +2

Today I tried the Gocatch Taxi 20$ credit I had from last deal. First I was rejected by one of the drivers (Directly asking for cash). The second driver picked me up but was very annoying and insisting me on paying cash and not by app credit. saying they dont pay him ( I think they pay them by points) but he was not happy.

    • +7

i know with uber they take 20% of the meter fare from the driver, maybe the same thing happens with go catch, which probably makes them unhappy, but why accept the job in the first place if that's the attitude of the driver lol

      • I was charged $14 for the ride, and I could see in his phone that he would be paid $8.30.

        • That's a solid 40% fee. :\

  • Friend of mine got charged $436 on New Years Day (early morning) to go from Neutral Bay to Bellevue Hill by Uber. She was tld in an email that it would be "very expensive" but that's just a ridiculous charge. Then they have the nerve to email after and ask for referrals LOL. The driver wouldnt tell her how much it was going to cost, just ignored her til the destination. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

    • +2

That's why you book via the app to see the approximate charge. And then confirm with the driver the charge that was quoted by the app.

      • App or not, it's a blatant ripoff. They said minimum charge was $90, and then the driver wouldn't say how much the trip would cost.

        • which service did they use, the have UberTaxi, UberBlack and UberLux

The app usually gives you a range of the fare that you will be charged for example $15 - $25.

        • +1

Who cares, at 436 for what is a 30 trip in a taxi max it would have to be a helicopter to make it worth it.

    • They used surge pricing on NYE/NYD to cater for the demand. Up to 8x the normal rate, so $436 sounds about right for that route. They'll tell you exactly how much before you book - I was quoted 6.5x the normal rate at around 2:30am. There are other ways to get around if it sounds like a ripoff.

      • SO are you saying they tell you the the approx amount before u travel?

It sounds kinda shady from Nafes story. I'm a bit wary of using it, even thou I just signed up.

Is there any indication of the "surge" pricing u referred to?

        • +1

They Sent out a mass email about the surge pricing

here is the email that was sent on the end of december 2013

New Year's Eve is upon us and we want to give you some quick pro tips for getting around with Uber. This New Year's Eve we'll have a record number of cars on the road ready to get you where you want to go. But, that doesn’t change one simple fact: on NYE, everyone wants to move around the city at exactly the same time!
We use surge pricing to help solve this problem. Higher prices bring more cars onto the system when you need them most, and prices return to normal as soon as there are enough open cars. When drivers are paid more to log on to Uber, they complete more trips on Uber.
But you can avoid the peaks of surge pricing with good timing on when you travel. Check out our smart tips below, and don't forget you'll always know the price before you request.

SO HOW DOES SURGE PRICING WORK?

With surge pricing Uber rates increase to get more cars on the road and ensure reliability during the busiest times. When enough cars are on the road, prices go back down to normal levels. Important details:

          • You'll always be clearly notified if surge pricing is in effect.
          • Here are a few remarks from Uber's CEO, Travis, on what to expect from surge on New Year's Eve.
          • The surge confirmation screen for Black and LUX requests requires you to type in the multiplier to ensure you know what to expect.
          • Booking fees for taxis will surge too. You may pay up to $25 to secure a taxi ride between midnight and 4am. Higher booking fees mean taxi drivers are more likely to accept your request.

          NO SURPRISES
Use the Fare Quote option in the Uber app to estimate your fare before you make your request. If surge pricing is in effect, your fare quote will always take the current rates into account.

        • So they didnt actually say what the pricing would be, just that it would be more. Sounds dodgey to me. The driver refused to give any details of the rate or cost until the journey was over. again, dodgey practice. They may be fine for normal trips, but this sort of nonsense means I wouldn't touch them at all.

        • Just get out of the car?

        • New term: I've just been "surged"

      • You could probably pay someone half that amount to be a driver for a night. But not surprised they charge that much. Hotels/houses do it for big events (see the prices for accommodation near Albert Park during the GP), so makes sense from a business point of view. I'm sure someone pays that much.

Not crash hot on providing credit card details just to sign up :-/

  • thanks EC!

I used a referral link from the wiki page, and entered the ABL1314 promo code which said successfully applied- however when I go to the payment section in the app it says Credit Balance: $20.

Did I mess something up or is it meant to be this way and the referral credit isn't listed as proper 'credit'?

  • Hi would this work for the Gold Coast?

    • Currently service in Melb and Syd.

Probably they will expand to more cities in the future.

      • Thanks

      • Don't count on it any time soon…

  • hi eastern!
i applied the referral coupon and the ABL1314 and i go into payments tab it only shows $20.???

    • go into promotions tab and you will see the other $20.

Dont worry, both will be applied when you take your ride.

The $20 in promotions tab gets used first, and then the other $20 gets used after if required for the same ride, otherwise anything left can be used for another ride

      • can we go with Uber Black (one ride) and get a ride together with $20 + $20 = $40 in one go?

  • How do we book for pick up at the airport?
I thought people need to queue and get random cab at the airport.
Is there a special taxi rank?

    • use the iphone or android app.

enter your pickup address (or use GPS location) and then enter destination. It will then give you a fare estimate and pickup time estimate. They then send an sms for approx pickup time.

  • +1

    Thanks a lot, EC~~~ :D
Wish I have another $20 referal for tonester…

    • Your welcome. Thank you too :)

    • no worries - enjoy :)

  • Thanks for the top deal! Just 2 questions:

    1. Is the $1 taken out of my debit card on signup a temporary authorisation charge?

    2. Can someone try "BEMERRY" on signup? (source: http://michaeljsonntag.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/uber-holi…). This may be a U.S. or USD only code - not sure if it'll work in aus (but it's potential $50 so worth a try i guess)

    • I think it's a USA geographic code for a specific state

Just in time, I was about to take a regular taxi this Friday to go to an important event, but now I can go in class with Uber. Thanks for posting!!

    • but now I can go in class with Uber.

      nice. your welcome

  • -1

I can only see $20 credit on my account. Followed it exactly… Any ideas?

  • please note:

Get your 2nd FREE $20 Credit (thanks to tonester) by clicking on the promotions tab and entering the promo code ABL1314

The cheapest service is their UberTaxi Service which is at standard taxi meter rates plus a $2 fee.

$40 credit would be enough for 4 free short trips

as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/129704#comment-1786866, ABL1314 is not credit but a voucher for $20 off your 1st uberblack/uberlux ride only

it is not valid for ubertaxi nor any ride after your 1st

    • According to this screenshot posted by mily, it doesn't specify what service its valid for nor geo-location .They usually specify any conditions the voucher has.

This is a screen shot with a code that has geographical restrictions
      http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/46868/20427/uberla2.jpg

      • vouchers are never valid for ubertaxi afaik :(

        • fair enough, ill call and ask tomorrow if i find a number for them

        • Do you managed to contact them? Is the $20 voucher works for taxi? Thanks

      • FYI, the ABL is the Australian Baseball League. According to them this coupon is valid for Sydney & Melbourne for Uber Black. Funnily enough, I follow the ABL yet never heard of this promotion.

        • just like most hawks fans/members probably haven't heard of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/120614 :)

        • Im confused now from both your comments, neil & tonester.
Should i update OP to reflect working on UberBlack only or UberBlack and UberLux

        • To be safe, you may like to leave UberBlack only in OP, and if you make a call to them tomorrow, hopefully you will get a firm answer from Uber re this question.

  • As a true OzBargain follower, I signed up first (ie. Buy first think later) then I checked whether it's worth to use the taxi for my next trip from home to the airport.

Based on the app, the estimated fare was $71-$83 depending on traffic, weather, etc.
However, if I use normal taxi, the fare is around $45-$47.

So if I end up using $40 credit from this promotion, I would probably save around $3-$14 :-)

** Assuming there are Uber taxis in my area on the day **

EDIT: just checked the comments above - I think the max credit I can use is $20, so in the end this uber taxi will cost more than my normal taxi fare :(

Anyway, THANKS easternculture for the post!!

  • kungfupanda cant u take a $20 ride and then get out, then order another taxi?

guys help me out i never used uber before. i just joined and got the $20 credit, hm.. what if the trip ends up $30, how do i pay the extra $10? Can i pay cash to the driver, or it comes out of the credit card i provided? What if i dont have enough credit limit on my credit card what happens then does the driver know it?

or do i have to bring that same card on the taxi ride to swipe it?

    • They don't take cash. Your credit card is saved with Uber.

It's also not for regular taxis, only Uber cars (their own fleet of cars).

  • taking taxis is a mugs game. run by mobsters
