    Will this pass Aussie customs?

custom's motto seems to be "When in doubt leave it out"!

Don't forget to leave this at home if you go through Customs in here. Couple months back I traveled to Brisbane with my family. My wife had a very cute small scissor that we bought when our elder one was born 7 years back and used it to cut her nails. We are using it for the little one as well and it was almost a mandatory part of our trips so far. We've been across many countries including US, UK, Malaysia, Japan, etc having this in here hand bag. We bought this in Japan when we were expecting our elder one and it had very big sentimental value in it. However flying domestic we had to loose it at Melbourne customs. It had it's cutting part less than 1cm and was with a nice plastic cover and didn't even have any sharp ends as it was made to use for infants. Only bad thing was part of it was made out of stainless steel. However customs refused to let us in with that and we've already checked in our luggage at that point. We were very close to departure time, so we had to give it to customs lady.
If I could do any harm to any one with that, I could do something bigger with a 50 cents coin or even with my own nails. My stainless steel watch has more sharp pieces in it that the infants nail cutter and it has hundred times more steel in it. :D

I am not sure why they are so paranoid about anything which can categorize as a knife, scissor, etc. By looking at it (obvious that it's a thing made for infants with pink colour plastic clip and handles) you know you can't do anything with that. Your nails or even a plastic comb can be used as far effective weapon than that.

Now I know anything you love which comes under that bad names should go into check in luggage when travel by plane.

    • I love how people think our Customs/Border Protection Service are the goddamned Batman, who pour over every mundane manilla-envelope package with an array of high-tech wizardry that can detect a speck of cocaine the size of an ant's contact lens.

They have enough trouble spotting trawler-sized vessels just kilometres offshore (over 16,000 since Rudd was PM). You think they're keeping up with the millions of registered mail packages coming into our country each day?

I doubt something like this given it's size and proportions would even get X-Ray scanned.

Our customs policy is a joke, and there are disassembled guns, drugs, and all sorts of contraband pouring in through our porous borders each day.

Just because you saw a bunch of unsuspecting drug mules from "insert 3rd-world hellhole here" get busted on Border Security once, doesn't mean that's the rule and not the exception.

They confiscated my metal multipurpose credit card sized tool. Saying it could be used as a weapon.

        • +1

That's the irony right there because 200 or so Glock pistols made into Australia via the post, without issue.

The other issue with Customs Officials is that they are a law unto themselves and often disregard the very laws they are supposed to be enforcing; you could probably contest that confiscation on legitimate legal grounds but they still have the final say in the matter.

        • +1

Crikey. I almost clicked on a Miranda Devine column. Don't do that to people!!!

        • Yep, both my wife and I had our metal multi-purpose credit card sized tools confiscated on separate occasions.

I'm afraid if it's metal and has pointy or sharp bits, it's a potential terrorist weapon in their eyes.

        • Read my comment above and see what I lost at customs flying domestic. I too have this credit card tool and if you really want you can do some harm using that. It has pointy and sharp edges and it's strong too. I know it can't be an effective weapon with any healthy adult.

        • Some of things I;ve had confiscated are borderline ridiculous and it varies from airport to airport.

Credit card tool.'survival tool'. I argued that thing couldn't slice a tomatoe. my nail cutters would though and they didnt care about that.

Small roll of duct tape. They said I could use it to tie someone. Mind you I had 3x3m ethernet cable and cable ties which they allowed.

stubby screwdriver with detachable bits. Ridiculous.

I could take on ceramic knife disguised as a pen and that would be ok.

they;ve lost the plot. I too have traveled all around the world inc the States and never been hassled with any items. Until I come to Autralias domestic airports.

Some of you are confusing Customs with airport security. Cant you tell the difference?

        • +1

in general customs handles your parcels, airport security staff check your baggage, but let me say this, without being too unkind to the more 'level headed' employees, if the saying "when in doubt leave it out" is true going by above comments it seems a lot of customs/airport staff are in doubt all day long! come on, a nail file/childrens scissors? a golf umbrella with the large metal spike on the end can do way more damage than a nail file yet the umbrella is fine! go figure!
staff should be stopping 'dangerous weapons' and my definition is an object that can put a person's life at risk, gun yes, large knife(not keyring type) yes, crossbow yes, but nail clippers/file?! crazy! even in the hands of a crazy person the most you'll get is a small cut, but noooo, nanny state to the rescue!

the other thing they banned, handheld laser pointers because some numbats pointed them at airplanes, the collimator lens means at that range the spot is way too large to blind a person, so at most it's a "distraction", from what i have read not one pilot has ever been actually blinded from a handheld laser shone from the ground! oh no, it's a 'distraction', must be banned! let's ban everything else that can be distracting in the cockpit, flashing light?banned! annoying buzzer? banned! cute flight attendant in short skirt? banned! fly buzzing around the cabin? banned!
          /end rant

        • Some of you are confusing Customs with airport security.

Just quickly, Customs also operate at airports screening international arrivals and departures and processing immigration clearances. So yes, customs do check baggage at airports.

I think everyone's experiences here have just proven my point.

Our Customs are a cluster-**** of contradictions and hypocrisy and they how view a particular category of goods really just depends on whose sweaty lap the decision falls upon.

There is no consistency in their verdicts and precedents are only used when it suits them, not the citizen.

Crikey. I almost clicked on a Miranda Devine column. Don't do that to people!!!

It's not about the messenger, it's about the message. Whether she's a loon or not doesn't negate the fact that our borders have more holes in them than a Brazzers video.

My point was, customs policy is so ass-backwards in trying to portray Australia as being "tough on illegal contraband" that they heavily scrutinise the easy stuff, like silly wooden carvings from Bali or 3-inch pieces of metal, to give out a false sense of security to John Q Citizen but they are totally inept when it comes to policing the dangerous, society-influencing stuff like shipments of firearms that used in escalating crime waves which they then use as justification to pass more Draconian laws. Funny that violence permeates society at just precisely the right time that politicians need it to, when sweeping and unpopular legislation needs broader support.

I too have this credit card tool and if you really want you can do some harm using that. It has pointy and sharp edges and it's strong too. I know it can't be an effective weapon with any healthy adult.

          Give me a friggin' break.

You could take the cutlery on a plane into the lavatory, sharpen it against the metal edges of the toilet bowel and have yourself a proper shiv in about a few minutes.

There are so many bigger fish to fry than credit-card multitools.

        • Block-quote My point was, customs policy is so ass-backwards in trying to portray Australia as being "tough on illegal contraband" that they heavily scrutinize the easy stuff, like silly wooden carvings from Bali

Silly wooden Carvings from Bali would probably be a Quarantine issue?

They confiscated plastic foam covered toy nunchucks I bought on eBay and sent me an infringement notice.

        • In case if you managed to smuggle them into the country, you could have killed few ants and flies by now using the plastic nunchucks. Good that they stayed tough on you. ;)

You want better Customs, pay more taxes.

  • Rep, I found your site lately having issue with free shipping on some product.

The product page said free shipping to Australia register post but after added to cart it was not free.

that might be OK but will certainly make it difficult for me to get in my house.

      Bottle cap opener

  • Looks useful. Hopefully it's strong enough to do what it's intended to do.

    • It's designed to wrap around the key to give it strength.

If this appeals, can I recommend you take a look at the Swiss+Tech utilikey.
    More expensive, but really useful.
I have had one on the keys for 15 years. Actually, two ans the first was confiscated at KLIA. Otherwise it has made it through a dozen or two flights.

      • what do you mean by 50pc limited offer, we have a large stock and have not limited the sale at this price

    • Got this swiss one mskeggs mentioned, using the philips head needs care not to cut oneself with the blade.

    • Yea, I also got one of these and they're pretty good for EDC, especially on the keychain. Bought it from FastTech for much cheaper and quality is quite good, even has Swiss+Tech Utili-Key stamped on it :P (although I doubt it is legitimate seeing as the real ones cost more than double exc. shipping).

  • Are there any places that won't let you bring this multi tool? For example, a club? Just want to make sure.

seems to be the cheapest you can buy the Swiss+Tech utilikey @ 4.99ausd incl free post.

Probably deserves a post in its own right.

    • I was reading through this post until I got your comment.
Somehow I find myself buying it.. lol couldn't resist.

I feel sorry for the banggood op - all of a sudden his post has been overtaken with better quality item suggestions… lol

      • Yep, I went for this one too.

    • Has anyone received theirs? I've sent an email but had no response from them… Are they legit?

  • Grabbed a bunch. Going to give them out as cheap gifts!

  • Oz bargain is great for alerting me to stuff I never knew I needed and then, as the shipping code area wouldn't work on iPhone, you guys even post alternative sellers.
    I love you guys.

  • I've just received mine, that was FAST.
I wish someone could tell me what the little rubber washer is for.

    • lol I think its to fit in between the keyhole and the tool so that it stays firmly in place :)

      • Thanks for replying.
It does not work this way if the keyhole is not small and round (my case) and it is pretty hard to hook on the carabiner with the washer inserted. Overall it is rather imperfect, I attempted cutting fishing line with the tool, it won't cut.
