    fair deal … but why would I spend $300 @ Coles !!

  • This would be good if you could buy a coles myer card for $300 and still get the discount - havent seen anything about not doing this. BTW … unless you can stock up on petrol (say 250 litres - Im not sure of the maximum) for boats / bikes etc your really only going to be saving about $20 on an average car which is less than 10% of the shop.

    • Sounds like a good idea with the gift card but I'm wondering what the terms and conditions are for this promotion.

  • +2

typically they are limited to 100 liters, so if you fill 2 cars your gonna save about 40 bux… (should be possible if you dont put the bowser down..)

sometimes cole's has some good big ticket items (TVs etc) one of those would do the job.

other than that your probably spending the extra 20-40 bux shopping at coles :D .. you gotta shop somewhere… but coles can get pricey.

    maybe people could pool together,

e.g. all do their shopping together, for one massive bill.

then all fill up their cars with petroleum on teh same bowswer/bill. to achieve maximum savings!

i would do this with some close friends. or imaginary friends, cause they never talk back.

  • This is great! I'm due for my monthly shop! The kids my find a few extra things in the pantry this week!

Ha - love how the article goes on a negative slant, firstly with a quote from Choice "These discounts are too small - BOO" and then quotes from Nick Xenophon - "These discounts are too big - BOO". LOL - anything to get their names in the papers.

But again, isn't the point that if you are doing the shopping anyway, the extra discount is a bonus? That's why Ozbargain rulz, we understand.

  • wonder if they allow this for LPG?? (the normal dockets work on LPG for me), could almost have free fuel!

too bad I did my bloody weekly shoping yesterday.

When is woolies matching it, same days, or will theres run later in the week??

  • can we buy gift cards?

I'm hoping the original poster will be kind enough to add the fine print that's on the bottom of the newspaper ad. It should tell us what can and can't be included.
I was in Coles an hour ago and didn't see any signs advertising this promo.

    • Nope - they are excluded.

  • +1

just saw the ad on the daily telegraph paper:

purchases of gift cards are not allowed, and it is only for "up to 150 litres per vehicle per person" which I believe means that you cannot fill up two or more cars and only use one docket.

this offer is also available at bi-lo and pick-n-pay stores.

if you want to view the full t&c, i guess you can always flick the daily telegraph paper they sell at coles :).. it's on page 4 or 6 i think.

    • “up to 150 litres per vehicle per person”

I'd take that to mean if you have two vehicles, you get 300l.

Found the offer on the Coles Express website colesexpress.com.au … Here's the fine print:
TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Customers must make the qualifying spend in one transaction at participating Coles (excluding Coles Express and coles.com.au), BI-LO or Pick’n Pay store between Monday 13 July and Wednesday 15 July 2009. Offer excludes gift cards, Kodak Kiosk machine purchases and purchase of tobacco and related products in Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales and ACT. Limit of one fuel discount receipt per fuel purchase up to 150 litres per vehicle per customer. This offer is not valid for Fleet Card, Shell Card, Motorcharge or Motorpass purchases. Offer not to be used in conjunction with any other offer or receipt. Valid in conjunction with additional 2 cents per litre discount for in-store spend at Coles Express. Coles Express fuel discount terms and conditions also apply, see in-store for details. For Coles Express store locations, see www.colesexpress.com.au

    • Yeah - in the herald sun I didnt see those exclusions (ie: in vic you may be able to buy gift cards ….)

Looks like the Qantas Woolie realation is Worth something for us! Ouch! it must be hurting Coles!

  • +2

If your just going to buy groceries at Coles and you normally don't shop there, its not worth it. I find their prices more then others, and just by shopping at places like Aldi and often even Woolworths I can make this deal not worth it.

You need to understand that at $100 your overspending a certain amount because its Coles, but then at $300 your overspending a lot more if you add it up.

Obviously if you normally shop and coles and what you get there is worth it this doesn't count.

  • You could purchase a $300 gift card, then get petrol and spend it when you get your petrol?

  • +1

hopefully they have some beer on sale
edit: becks for 45 and 2 bottles of jack daniels for 70 aint too bad

  • +2

I ant spending $300 at Coles to save $40c p/l. 4c will do just fine

Its a $15 saving if you fill a 40lt tank.

    • Nop it is $16

      • +1

I think Skystar actually means a $14.40 saving, because you would have got the 4c per L anyway.

    • +1

Guys, maybe I'm missing some math, but…

      4 cents off at 40 Litres = 0.04 * 40 = $1.60

      Right?

To save $15 you would have to buy 375 litres worth!

      Right?

Going out of your way to qualify for these type of deals seems rather self-defeating.

      • I was comparing the 40c/L saving to the 4c/L saving. 40c/L on 40L is $16, minus the $1.60 saving you would have already got on 4c/L. So, effectively the saving is 36c/L in other words.

      • -1

Wrong way to do the maths.

Say you fill up 40 litres at a $1.20 - the max discount makes it .80 a litre. So whereas the original cost would be
        $48 it is now $32.

Dud deal though that encourages spending at overinflated prices.

  • +1

they prob increased alot of the prices throughout the store =p
thats wat i think, but hey wat do i know xD

    • I was wondering why there was very little on special in Coles Catalog last week!

Given Wollies have caught by surprise, I think it is better to get the 40c at Wollies!

  • These bigger discount vouchers are excellent if you have a duel fuel car. We loved them when we had to fill our lpg/petrol vehicle. Fill both tanks (one vehicle) with the one docket, not a problem.

  • +5

isn't this just a ploy to sidtrack you from the real point of shopping. I did notice there were hardly any specials on sale last week. I did notice that the things that werre on special this week were 50c to $1 more than the same items that were on special a few weeks back.

I bet you could save just as much by shopping at other places other than the BIG 2 (Woolies and Coles. Without the shopper fuel docket fiasco.

    • +3

i can see what you say and mean and i also agree, but i think that if you were a shopper who always shopped at one of the two (coles, safeway) for any reason, this is a legatimate bargain.

No positive or negative vote from me, because this is a good and bad deal.

  • Woolworths is doing it too with their shopping card
I just realised this morning when I was buying food for a BBQ
Too bad I didn't know about it prior because I bought $189 and could've paid more to get the extra 15c/L discount xD

  • +1

No positive or negative vote from me either. But i do think this is leaning toward the side of bad. Remember coles is now owned by wesfarmers who paid a whopping $22BILLION dollars for this lame duck. Prices will have to go up somewhere in order to to balance the sheets and what does coles do? Sell food I think. The old saying goes "if it's to good to be true, it probably is.

  • If you're going to spend that much money anyway, then go for it. Otherwise don't bother.

  • +1

you could buy $300 worth of tim tams at $2 a packet

    • LOL at this!! =) Tim tams are $1.86 this week!

  • +1

Can we buy something worth $300, get the fuel discount and return the stuff we bought?

    • LOL never thought of that! Smart + funny!

  • +1

Bloody awesome deal. Especially if you normally shop there anyway!

  • +1

This is all a scam. You do realise that they have factored the price into the cost of the groceries (hence the limited time to buy). Even in the best case scenario with a 40c voucher which can save you $60 if you have a 150 litre truck to fill up, you are still spending $300 on overpriced groceries. Most people will be saving $15-25 on their fuel bill but will have to spend $300 on premium priced groceries. Compared to Aldi or independents Coles are considerably more expensive (for arguably an inferior product and less choice). Meanwhile the market is being squeezed, the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths grows bigger and independant fuel suppliers go out of business.

  • Seems to be one element of a PR offensive to combat the recent GroceryChoice negativity rather than the start of a genuine price war.

In the end someone's gotta pay for this. Unlikely it'll be Coles/Woolies directors and shareholders.

  • +1

This does nothing for competition in the grocery and fuel industries. All it does it slightly decrease the already over inflated prices that we are paying compared to other countries.
In the long term we will end up having to pay even more because of 'deals' like this as Coles/Woolworths market dominance will only get stronger.

    • +2

Agreed. This duopoly is getting out of hand.

    • Exactly summed it up perfectly

  • +2

I've filled up two cars from the same bowser before, albeit that was with the 4c discount at Safeway petrol. No hassles.

But unless you are already committed to spending that $300 for your family or whatever, it is hardly a bargain to save a few measly dollars on petrol. Based on my 70L tank (average for a prestige car), the maximum I would save would be $28. I'm sure I could find $28 worth of savings in those $300 worth of groceries somewhere if I tried.

This highlights the additional irony of people trying to make the $30 minimum spend for a 4c voucher - the saving on 70L is a measly $2.80! Wow! Probably bought $10 of stuff you didn't need!

Just ensure you fill up at the low point in the weekly cycle instead (Wednesdays for me) to minimise petrol cost.

  • We needed to do a big shop anyway. My Prado has a 2x90L tanks so will make good use of this deal :)

  • Does anyone know if you can get the voucher by purchasing wine at say liqourland usually located next to coles (in vic) ?

    thanks

    • probably not mate. The liquor purchases have to be made in the liquor store, and the groceries have to be purchased in coles = different servers.

Every 6 weeks (or so) liquorland offers 20c/l of petrol when purchasing 6 or more bottles of wine. So don't worry, it will come up soon. (They rotate between deals)

      [yeah i worked at liquorland]

  • The $30 shop 4c tickets often get wasted as there are too many of them for my use.

I make a point of only buying "value" and sometimes that makes spending $30 hard, but yesterday there was lamb legs at $8.90 per Kg, which is about as good as it gets. So, I grabbed 9 legs at around $20 each. Also, there is the 250gm fruit and nut chocolate at $1.50 each — it is getting increasingly hard to buy chocolate at less that $10 / kg, so that is exceptional value. That puts me up to $210 with 20 blocks. A couple of 1kg blocks of cheese, another $15. A couple of 500gm Nescafe coffee, another $30. And 4 packs of fruit and nut mix that I buy often at $10 each. Oh and I grabbed something else I needed, which was marked down anyway. All up, I got to $302 — perfect.

My car is dual fuel and LPG is low (almost empty), so is petrol. I'll get full use of the 40c ticket easily.

Now, fortunately I had plenty of freezer space. The 9 lamb legs will last 9 weeks with one roast per week. The coffee and chocolate will last a good deal of time too. I didn't overspend on anything and I got value for everything.

I too wondered about liquorland, but I would have had to buy a year's supply of beer at the current good special on offer of $33 per case (2 for $66, advertised at 2 for $68, but the local prices with other competition have the $66 pricing). I didn't do that, but it was tempting. Besides the ticket is only good for 4 weeks, so a second ticket wasn't going to be worth as much to me. My wife's car isn't dual fuel, so the possible savings with her car aren't near as good and she doesn't do the mileage that I do.

So yes, it was very good for me — but I can understand those with small fuel tanks and one fuel only, not being able to get anywhere near the value that is available to me.

  • Hmm

I really don't think this deal was all that great.

As you can get coles vouchers at 5% off from many places anyway

But if you had a really big car it might be worth it to get the vouchers ($285 outlay) and spend them to qualify.

something to think about for next time
