    Good deal.
I like the first question posted on Amazon: "Does this come with a sticker? If yes, what's written on it?"
Yeah, that would be my first selection criteria when buying a CPU.

    • Now im curious… whats on the sticker?…hahahaha

  • -4

I'm not sure I'd call any AMD CPU a 'bargain' atm.

    • -1

Would depend on your usage. In particular for games and streaming them, benchmarks put them up there with i5 and i7s. At this price it is a bargain

      • No, games are the workload least suited to the 8350.

      • +1

In particular games, yes, but that is being very selective and not how it looks for the majority of games.

However where AMD does perform well is $ per FPS, it beats Intel there, but that is still something worth debating. Not only does the AMD system consumes more power, costing more over time but Intel Processors can be used for longer. I paid more for my 1st Generation Core i5 system than I would if I used AMD, but I'm still using it today and I can play the latest games.

A possible future benefit of using this CPU over Intel is that the XBox One and PS4 use an 8 core AMD CPU and hopefully ported games will take advantage of 8 cores on a PC. That could mean 5 to 8 years of great CPU performance in games.

  • $239 at PC case gear, was going to buy one from there today.

    • So are you going to save yourself $56?

      • $190.46 vs. $239 + gas. I'm happy

  • Wow 8 core.
Does this beat an Intel i7 latest gen?

    • +2

No. It is compatible in games but aside in rendering and other such tasks the i7s are more powerful. The price difference arguably balances this out

      • OK Thanks, I will look to upgrade to i7 then…

        • Don't forget that although i7's are 'only' quad-cores, they also are hyper-threaded.

    • +1

4 modules, 2 core per module. Some parts of the cores are shared per module. So its not quite a true 8-core CPU.

Does this beat an Intel i7 latest gen?

Virtually no AMD CPUs have beaten their i5/i7 counterparts in terms of raw performance or value for money since Intel launched Sandy Bridge in 2011. With Nehalem (first-gen i3/i5/i7 in 2008) it was a more competitive market, since the Phenom II X4s were actually very respectable for their price and were great for budget gaming builds; but AMDs processors really haven't been relevant since 2011. No fanboyism on my part; I have an AMD GPU.

The only place AMD has really had traction in the CPU market as of late is in the mobile segment; their APUs actually outperform Intel's IGPs in the quad/six-core CPUs and they are quite close to their Intel equivalents in terms of raw performance.

True. Bit of a pity. I used to be quite loyal to AMD because it used to be cheaper to build an AMD-based pc. But since about 2011 that is no longer the case. Especially not considering that you can get cheap all-in-one motherboards for Intel easier than AMD. Total cost of a build now much lower with Intel, for a given performance level.

I bought my Phenom II X4 955 BE over 4 years ago for $200 and it's been great, still using it on my main PC. I am thinking about upgrading soon though, unfortunately the FX-8350 isn't compatible with my Asus M4A79XTD motherboard.

      • Sad but true :(…

My current rig is an i7 and it's the first time I've gone Intel in a desktop machine since my old Celeron 366.

AMD always offered so much more bang for buck than Intel and for a few years there they even had the performance crown… this is the reason my last 5 desktop machines have run AMD CPU's… But today the performance gap between Intel and AMD has widened and AMD doesn't have that much of a price/performance advantage anymore, especially once you factor in things like performance per watt and Intel's top LGA1150 CPU's topping out at around $360-390.

Apparently AMD are going to be releasing a new x86 architecture next year, hopefully that means they manage to step up and be really competitive once again… They've made a few stumbles in recent years, but the Athlon 64 era shows that they are capable of some impressive innovations.

That being said, they still aren't a terrible choice depending on what you are after (I wanted lower power usage/higher performance rather than a budget build). Also Their APU's are impressive and they are still managing to be really competitive in the GPU space.

      • My old Phenom II X4 965 BE from 2010 is still ticking along nicely…I am tempted to drop in an FX8350 and see if I can get a bit more performance but…..but then again im sure I will be limited by my XFX 5850 Black Edition on the gaming front and the 965 BE is still doing a sterling job of photo rendering/stitching etc.

There is nothing like watching 4-cores working overtime (or 8-cores in the office). The AMD's still have the edge in heavily threaded stuff, almost keeping up with the 4770k when you can use all the cores.

Here's to the next AMD CPU…fingers crossed they close the gap though. Single core performance at i3 level is not acceptable.

      • I have a Phentom 2 x4 955 and was looking to upgrade… I buy last seasons gear simply because no game needs bleeding edge gear these days, they make nearly everything for consoles thus no need.

Anyway, I'm sticking to my CPU for awhile… starcitizen might make me upgrade however! :)

      • That's a pity, AMD were the ones keeping Intel's prices in check…

  • +2

People buy beefy CPUs just for gaming… I don't know why.

    • Not just gaming. Number crunching and data processing.

    • +2

yeah… they think CPU power is the upmost importance…but its not… a i5 will do plenty in gaming

    • It seems like a waste of cash and it is. But someone has to buy them.

I would spend the extra coin on a bigger SSD or GPU. One that's as big as a house.

      • +2

One that's as big as a house.

You will have latency issues with such distances.

  • +1

Are AMD ever going to replace this CPU? It's nearly 2 years old… The FX-9xxx are insane for TDP and could not be considered the replacement.

    • +3

The FX-9xxx series is AMD's swan song for big core x86 processors. I don't think there will be any replacements for the FX series.

they've given up on making products that can equally compete with the Intel Core series, instead focusing on APU's and mobile ARM processors.

Intel will have a monopoly on desktop CPU's in the future. Kind of sad when you think about it.

      • It is sad, because no competition means lack of innovation. I used to be a bit of an amd fanboi because they offered bang for buck and supporting the little guy, but now I have no amd processors in any of my pc's.

        • I personally feel there isn't a need for most users to get more power from their CPU, surely for most people the CPU's available are phenomenally fast. CPU's could do with drawing less power, so hopefully running cooler and quieter though.

I'd love to see software catch up to CPU's, because of the speed of modern CPU's software developers do not have to optimize their software as well. Not having a crack at software developers as they are often rushed to produced software that works rather than is optimized well.

  • +1

There were talks of dumping the FX series and totally focusing on their APU lines but seems that's not the case.

    New FX coming in 2016?

  • i7-4690 runs 15% faster, 33% cooler and costs %91 more
i5-4690 runs 13% slower, 33% cooler and costs %36 more
Performance according to passmark CPU benchmark, pricing compared to MSY.
And, purchased almost 18 months ago my
i7-3770 runs 4% faster, 38% cooler and cost %52 more

IMHO it is an alright deal if you want cheapest performance spend and are happy with the extra cooling costs and/or noise tradeoff.

  • So when is Amazon going to do an intel deal?

  • i have this cpu & its awesome iv never reached over 50% with thie cpu & i do alot of gaming & abit of rendering

    • uhm… it may be possible that your task manager never shows more than 50% per logical core due to hyperthreading.

  • +1

I believe I bought this one year ago for $145 on black friday

  • bought 1 year ago, good cpu, beat Intel on performance per dollar, no problem run all games in ultra high settings. seems the price has not change for a whole year….not common in IT world, usually price will slash in half after a year.

  • Total: $199.11
