  • Not a bad price, but doesn't compete with EB's Wii U basic, Mario Kart 8 (+1 downloadable game), Skylander's Swap Force and Nintendo Land (potentially) for $279.

    • Everyone gets 1 downloadable game with any Mariokart purchase.

      • That's why I put it in brackets.

        • No Nintendoland though either in that deal from look of poster

        • +1

On my preorder receipt from EB, it lists Skylander's as the Skylander's console bundle, which includes Nintendo land. Same for other people too. Might be luck of the draw, but I'm happy.

        • Kool deal if that's the case. I hope it's not luck
Cause If you look at fine print on that deals it says . Limited time only. 2 game included are swap force and Mario kart 8.

        • Yeah, I saw that. Some people are saying their EB's are fulfilling the orders with whatever stock they have, i.e. Skylander's console bundle/Skylanders + Swap force game. I guess I'll see on Saturday.

Though you would think Skylander's would be a separate item on the receipt if it wasn't the bundle… because Mario Kart 8 is listed separately.

        • That's good then :) They are a pretty good retailer EB Games!

So for a Mario Kart 8 game only purchase ordering online with the WELCOME code is the cheapest way to get it? Do they do immediate click-n-collect or does it need to be shipped to the store?

    • shipped to store

  • OP, please post link to deal/ products

    • +1

I can't they aren't live. They are in a special catalogue which isn't online :(

  • I am waiting for Big W and K-mart to beat their competitors

    • +1

Big W Has Nintendo wii u premium + Mario kart $398
They also have Mario Kart Wii for $58

Kmart have same Preimum bundle for $399
No idea on price of game from Kmart

Should mention these deals start 29th :)

My goodness the 3DS XL bundles still continue to be piss poor, just getting rid of old stock games. Still can't fathom why they didn't do a proper one with XY. Hoping one for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

    • Yeah you can tell they are basically throwing that game at you for free lol

  • +2

I went to ebgames today, and they told me i can either preorder the bundle, OR buy the skylanders bundle first for full price ($348), and come back on saturday and they will give me mario kart 8 and refund the difference in price.
    I have done this.

The bundle i got obviously comes with nintendoland.

    Hope this helps some people.

    • Which state & store? So you did the latter?

  • Which one is the deal?

  • I just bought a Wii U from Target on the 21st, do they have a price guarantee?

    • +1

      Dunno, maybe check their website?

    • can't you just return it?

  • I wonder if we will see them at $200 by Christmas

    • I hope so. That is the impulse buy price for me. I don't see myself playing a lot of games on it, but Mario 3D World and an upcoming Zelda, I can see a case for spending $200. I think the Wii U needs a lot of help and other than a price drop, I don't know what else they can do.

      • $200 dollars for an entire console is criminally cheap. If they get that low, I worry for Nintendo.

There are already a lot of amazing games on the console (way better exclusives than the 'graphics over gameplay' next-gen cousins of the console) and honestly if you're not going to buy in at $250 you probably shouldn't buy in at all.

        • It would be the price of a PS3 or 360 without a HDD. Hardware wise, that's about what it's equivalent to, so it should be priced that way. Library wise it's far behind them.

      • Same. I mean look at the price of the original Wii console now + Nintendo are struggling big time.

  • +1

I really want to suggest to these guys to do a 2 controller mario kart 8 bundle .. surly a lot of potential customers are buying this for the multi-player and need controllers… lets say $150 2 Pro controllers and the game :) ( well I filled out the Kmart comment form - Big W doesn't seem to accept electronic communication)

  • Thanks OP, been hanging to see what Target would do with the Wii U.

It is strange that there is no text regarding the Wii Mote with the MK8 Wii U Bundle. Looks like everyone is trying to get rid of Just Dance 4 as well, EB just added it and Rabbids to their MK8 Bundle. I'd take a Wii mote over rabbids any day ;)

    • Yeah I'm not sure if they are normally included with the new consoles?? I looked at the Nintendo website and it doesn't mention they come with a mote

  • Not usually, the only Wii U bundle I have ever seen that had a Wii Mote is the Just Dance/Nintendo Land/Wii Mote/Sensor Bar add on pack with the Basic consoles.

    • Kool I'm glad I added them then :)

  • Question to someone who owns a Wii U, does the console make you update the firmware frequently in order to play the latest games or access the store? All my PS devices do that, and it's annoying as hell. Especially if you only use them once in a while, being a casual gamer. Every time I turn it on I have to do an update.

I believe the 3DS does this too, but I don't play enough games to run into it.

The price is acceptable, though I'd rather pay $200 and not get any free games.

    • Not all the time; my console has only ever done 2 updates since Christmas.

Edit: Why would you NOT want free games? If you wait til July, you'll get your wish I guess?

      • +1

Is anything truly free, or just clever marketing? You can say that the console is $279 and Mario Kart is free. Or you can say that the console is $200 but you are forced to buy MK for $79. In the end it's the same. But I would really like to buy the console for $200 without Mario Kart.

I don't believe the game is really free. They just factored it into the price. If it was free then you can say they've effectively cut the price of the console, in which case, why don't they do that for me without involving any games?

        • +1

Oh for sure it is marketing at it's finest, the "forced free game" is an upcoming popular title and Nintendo is hoping this will be enough to move consoles. But marketing or not , with the $279 deal if you don't like MK8 then you still get another title that you can download for free. Yeah it may not have SM3DW and some others missing from the available "free" games but again they are banking on MK8 to move consoles/other games.

Take the EB deal for instance, you also get Skylanders Swap Force (doesn't appeal to me) and if you are super lucky you also get Nintendo Land.
Same price as targets. What does nearly every bundle available have included in it at the moment? MK8
As a person who has no interest in Skylanders I am going to sell it and try get around $40 with the figures etc. If I didn't like MK8 I would probably grab the free game code and sell it without this. Then hopefully have enough to grab a game that isn't available through the free game offer/bundle.
Sounds like a lot of work but I'm a true Ozbargainer and enjoy that kind of stuff ;)

The console will only get cheaper with time so I am sure it will hit $200, possibly before end of the year (unless they fully discontinue the basic). If you are in no rush then hopefully you will get a deal soon :)

        • I Can't wait to see if Mario kart does move consoles!! Will be so interesting over the next 2 months, then we also have super smahs bros and Bayonetta 2 Plus more announcements at E3 digital event too :)

        • I've always had zero interest in a Wii U, but the EB console deal + the look of Mario Kart 8 sold me. So that's one person it's persuaded, 10 million more to go :)

        • +1

Here's the thing. I don't think Nintendo has a lot of faith in their own console. Mario Kart is one of their biggest selling IPs. On the Wii it went on to sell 35 million units. Nintendo is only projecting 3 million Wii Us to be sold this fiscal year, even though MK and Smash Bros (another big selling franchise) are out this year. For a game that last generation outsold Call of Duty on all consoles combined and then some (yes it even sold more copies than GTA5 on PS3 and 360 combined) to not shift more than 3 million consoles tells me Nintendo are getting prepared to cut and run.

I'm always going to be in fear that they don't support the console for too long before the next one replaces it (there's already talks about some health based console they're working on), which is why I want the price to be lower (without including games I don't want) before I give them my money.

For perspective, last fiscal year, they projected 9 million Wii U sales, and this is without their two big selling IPs (Kart and Smash). Only near the end did they cut that projection down to 2.8m (which they still failed to hit). Now with their two biggest non-shovelware titles due this fiscal year, they are still only projecting 3 million, and not 9 million or more. It tells me they don't have much belief in this system, and you have to ask yourself, if Nintendo doesn't believe in their console, why would you? I want them to succeed, because I still want my Nintendo games, but I need to do it at minimal risk.

        • Well written and you're on the ball… but I guess minimal risk is different for different people. Even if they don't release any more games, I will easily get my $279 worth. It's almost worth it for Mario Kart 8 alone (if you get enough play time out of it). With all the great games already released: Donkey Kong, Scribblenauts (x 2), 3D Mario, 2D Mario, 2D Luigi, Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Nintendo Land etc. It would take a while to clock all these well-made games. Furthermore, the fact they made such a highly-rated Mario Kart (i.e. lots of 10/10 scores) means they are still committed to making the Wii U successful.

        • Best thing they could do is sell the Gamepad separately and add the black pro controller to the Console

        • +1

Best thing they could do is sell the Gamepad separately and add the black pro controller to the Console

If they do that, they kill the only differentiator between their console and the competition. I don't think that will happen. The Wii U according to Nintendo was inspired by the idea that you can play the game while someone else watches TV and you don't fight over it. The second selling point is asymetrical gaming. One person has the tablet, and the rest use Wiimotes. The player with the tablet has a different experience. He might be creating items or traps for the other players, or creating levels for them to play. Granted, Nintendo haven't really shown this to us in practice (I don't know if any games currently support this) and it conflicts with the first selling point.

If they make the gamepad an accessory, they will do what Microsoft just did with the Kinect: doom it to oblivion, and make their console just another ordinary console.

With all the great games already released

I don't doubt that Nintendo still makes great games. The only question mark is the future, and whether those great games will be on 3DS or Wii U. If sales don't vastly exceed the expectations in their financial report, I can see them focusing on handheld in the future. They'll still make a few more years worth of games for Wii U, but it won't be around for near as long as PS4 and X1.

The plus side is that 3DS is much more successful for them, and the games will be cheaper to make. If they make another console based on a gimmick, I don't think they will be able to catch lightning in a bottle again like they did with the Wii.
