update: no shipping to Aus for the 2tb

    • select amazon as the seller.
      its 113.31us$ shipped.

      • How do you do that?

        • +3

On the right hand side under Add to Cart, it shows the other sellers.

        • Got it, thanks, it's $2 more.

Great price for 2TB. Come down heaps. Purchased for $150ish plus post approx. 2 years ago

    • +3

The slim version of the 2TB is $5 more if anyone's interested, the Slim is slightly smaller and has a metal enclosure.

      • Hi Borris,

Thanks for that, but it's $10 more for me.
        Or is that after shipping?

        • Oops, not sure if it changed or I was just terrible at maths but yeah it's $10 more.

      • +1

        The 1TB is $5 more while the 2TB is $10 more :)

      • I bought a Slim. The slimness is barely noticeable. A bit misleading if you ask me. I would get whichever is cheaper. Speed is the same.

  • Can anyone tell me the actual real life speeds of this drive? Anybody got one already?

    • It's around 100MB/s. I have 3 Ultras and 1 Slim. It's faster than my internal HDD, so copying stuff from internal HDD to the passport will be slower because it's being bottlenecked by the internal drive.

      • Awesome thanks! Will be copying from ssd to it, so shouldnt be an issue :)

  • Might be a stupid question, but how does the warranty work with buying from the US? Is it still valid is AUS or would it have to go through the US to claim?

    • You probably have to shipped it back to US at your own expense.

However, these days it is rare for known brand electronics to need a warranty.

      It can happen, but rare.

Hence, buying extended warranty usually is not a good idea, expecially for cars, TV, fridges, washing machines, audio, mattresses.

    • For rma you will have to send registered post to Malaysia. Well that's what I did when my 2tb hd died. Going through Amazon may be a cheaper repair alternative.

Thanks, just picked one up too. $6.78 USD shipping to Perth as well. Used my Bankwest Platinum card that has no Forex fees and rather than Amazon doing the currency conversion I let Mastercard do it (ie. I chose to be charged in USD, not AUD). It hasn't been processed yet but I'll update this post once I can see it in internet banking (should be in the next hour or so).

Will be interesting to see who would have given me the better deal, Amazon's conversion to AUD, or Mastercard's conversion with 0% fees added by Bankwest.

    • +1

It is the latter without doubt.

    • Amazon dont process the payment until the order ships.

      • Yeah I just realised that, so I won't know until tomorrow most likely. I was a little disappointed, they had a nice hard case that was only about $5, but they wouldn't ship the case to Australia. I can probably get one off eBay for the same price though.

    • This is what it ended up costing me by letting Mastercard do the conversion and not Amazon:

      29/05/2014 AUTHORISATION ONLY - AMAZON.COM MZN.COM/BILL US $71.25

      According to xe.com, 71.25 AUD = 66.1421 USD

So I'm pretty happy with that.

      • That is a sweet deal!
Amazon's total comes up to :

        Items: AUD 77.08
        Shipping & handling: AUD 7.58
        Total before tax: AUD 84.66
Estimated tax to be collected: AUD 0.00
        Order total: AUD 84.66

I have a CommBank normal debit card (a student who got here just 2 months ago!), I have a feeling that their conversion rates may be much more than Amazon's if I decide to pay that off in USD!

Yet to make the pull the trigger, though. I'd prefer a 2TB as well.

EDIT: Seems like they've upped the price for all, my bad!

  • EPIC Thanks

    just got 2 - 2TB delivered for 221.64 from amazon.com

    THANKS digitalric, Pisslur and SKD100

was looking to buy two of these anyway

  • ordered 1x 1tb, 1x 2tb

slim mehh.. extra money for looks, performance isn't that much imo

seagate backup slim is slimmer than the WD

  • also bought the 32gb usb stick for 13.98 and using combined shipping it was just another extra dollar towards postage. http://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Blaze-Swivel-Flash/dp/B0…

  • Please remove.

  • I'm pretty sure all WD portable drives have compulsory encryption even if you have no password set. So if the USB board fails all the data is lost even if you didnt encrypt it. Anyone know if seagate does the same thing?

    • If that is the case, wouldn't it be encrypted with factory default password?

      • +1

No. As in the board encrypts all the data going to the drive even if no password is set, there's no default password. So basically with the board you can access it. Without the board (if you can even plug SATA in directly) there is no way to access the drive. I've had two drives fail this way, so I'm keeping away from WD portables/externals.

edit: whirlpool link, one of many examples http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1361400&p…

  • Okay so i have never ever bought anything from amazon before…My card (ING everyday) is in AUD, so for me its $75. Is there any way to get to the $65? Or at least a little less?

    • It defaults to expedited shipping, so you can save about $3 by choosing the less expensive option. The $65 in the title is US dollars (I think), so it will end up about $72 or so.

    • Look at my post above. I used a card with no Forex fees and it cost me $71.25 AUD.

  • I would but I already have a 1TB and a 2TB that aren't exactly full :P

  • Great deal.. Thanks OP

  • Says "This item can't be shipped to your selected destination" Perth
    Am i missing something here?

  • look this is a good deal as I am in the market - so I checked Umart - it's $96 there for the WD - the Seagate comparable is $88 - then I saw an ADATA brand one??? for $69!! kind of a leap of faith to trust an unknown brand but close enough to Amazon price of the WD. Sorry can't direct URL to it http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2 then Hard Disk, External Hard Disk

  • Would this not be a cheaper alternative? http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-HDTB220…

    • Transfer Rate: Up to 480 MB/s

      Hmmm. Those are SSD speeds.

    • The reviews are kinda terrible, though!

  • thanks bought the slim 2tb. I feel it is more worth it to buy since it is cost a lot more in OZ.

  • People of oz bargain and the world, please read WD's t&c's before purchasing one of their products as they are not responsible for their device losing all the data you had safely thought was saved for all posterity. They did send me another cord, but still no access, and they will gladly point you in the direction of companies who, for a fee will recover lost data, but THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU LOSE YOUR SH1T!

    • Name one hard drive company that are responsible if you lose your shit..
Hard drives die, there's no excuse for not keeping a backup, and a backup of your backup if necessary.

      • Fo' reals? So I should get a back up HD for my back up HD? What if that one fails?
For now, I have duplicates of duplicates saved over a wide range of $10 flash drives.
I was not aware that all HD companies were this irresponsible. They should basically go I to the tobacco business if that's the case.

  • so these can't be taken out to put in a ps3?

    • These are USB only drives. The Hitachi HGST 5K1500 1.5TB is the largest drive that will fit inside a PS3.

      • I mean open up to use as internatl

  • Thanks so much for the post - grabbed one :)

  • 3TB 3.5" drives are around the $130 AUD mark, and these 2.5" drives are pretty much close to that price.

4TB & 6TB drives are still much more expensive on a per GB basis.

  • Ordered the 2TB Ultra on the 28th of May. Its getting sent using i-Parcel, however the tracking status is "package delayed - Received at i-Parcel and on hold for review". Anyone here having the same status message? The reviews for i-Parcel is mostly negative (a lot of lost parcels) :(

    • Yep same. Contacted them and they said that it was stuck at customs for a check. Now delivery date is June 17th.
