For anyone looking after this deal has finished, it's only one or two cents more expensive at BuyInCoins (everyday price), if you purchase with 28degrees or similar credit card:
    http://www.buyincoins.com/item/288.html

Most of the Chinese bargain sites sell these considerably more expensively.

    • yeh, not too happy with my last order from buyincoins so might give meritline a go this time.

  • I ended up paying $1.00 from my account - oh well.

I have one of these - it's not a wire stripper/cutter, it's really good for making perforations around an ethernet cable's plastic sheathe. You can easily pull apart the sheathe off afterwards. Much cleaner than using small scissors.
Just thought I might add this in case people don't know what it does.

Cabling is part of my job and there's a much simple trick for cat-5/6 cables.

Snip down the cable using your side-cutters, about 1cm on both sides, so you have two "handles" to pull on.

Then pull the blue cladding apart with both hands. It peels like a banana. Then trim up the cladding with the side-cutters. This trick avoids nicking the pairs.

You need rotary cutter tools for coax but for cat-5/6 you just use side-cutters.

    • Isn't this quicker? Slip the cable in, spin it around with your finger, then pull it off.

      • in my experience it never works as easy as that and I end up just using a Stanley knife

This is actually a network punchdown tool with integrated stripper. They don't really know what they're selling. It's no good whatsoever for cutting anything. If you're wiring up an ethernet plug and your cable has a nylon thread inside, you'll still need a pair of scissors or side-cutters to remove it.

It's a useful disposable tool to keep in the bottom of any tool box in case you're doing a computer job and need to re-seat dodgy RJ-45 or RJ-11 wiring. They're not comfortable or long lasting, but they'll get you out of trouble. They are also handy tools if you're crawling through a confined space and don't have much room to use a large stripper and punch-down tool.

I've had a few cheap ones disintegrate on me, so before you take one out into the field, make sure you securely glue the blade into the handle, otherwise it's likely to pop out the first time you try to strip anything.

    • Thanks for this. I'd like a wire-cutter/stripper, but it sounds like you saved me buying something (a crappy tool) I didn't need.

  • Got to have one of this. Thanks!

  • I don't know what I'll use it for yet but the power of Ozbargain compels me to buy it, just in case.

Good in case the local rabbi is ill and you get called on to do a circumcision?
