  • I use a Smart Control in one room, a Touch in another room and a 650 in the bedroom. Some people don't like the positioning of the buttons up the top but I rarely use them with my media streamers. $99 is a great price!

  • Dick Smith on Catchoftheday!!!

    • they are also on David Jones…

  • While I was on the ZDSE web site I noticed Harmony Smart Controls are going for $99 free shipping:

These are usually at a minimum $120 plus shipping.

i almost bought one but then watched this review:
    http://www.cnet.com/au/products/logitech-harmony-touch/

maybe worth hanging out for a 650/700. buttons > touch screen

    • Like I said, think about your usage. I use mine mainly for media streamers so up, down, left, right, ok and back. For TV I have the channel icons on the screen so I don't need to use the numbers. I don't know why reviewers complain about 'transport' buttons because they're usually mapped to left, ok and right for RW/play/pause/stop.

If you use numbers a lot then this remote is bad for you.

that should be "If you use numbers, fast forward, skip, reply and rewind a lot then this remote is bad for you." i know MCE doesn't use the up/down/left/right buttons to control media.

      • I have the Smart Hub (using an iPhone as the control) and really do not miss physical buttons at all. I've mapped all the TV channels to favourites and where it makes sense I have forward and back commands readily available. Very rarely do I have to dig too far to get to any input and when I do it's not that much of an ideal.

If you skip around a lot in a specific show then 'maybe' you'd miss physical buttons, but I find most of the actions such as channel changing has been more or less replaced with commands anyway. Once I'm on a show I don't change channels and the like especially often however.

        • sounds like a nightmare (IMO). a remote for me is something I shouldn't have to look at. anything with a touchscreen takes that away and forces me to look and navigate through menus.

so in a family environment, does everyone use their iphones to control it? or is there a dedicated iphone near the tv?

        • Whoever turned the TV on will have a phone on them so it's either on the table or on the person. No different to a remote really.

To get watching a TV channel would be a 3 click process of selecting the activity 'watch TV' (which will turn my receiver and TV on), clicking 'favourites' and selecting a channel. From there you can change channel with one button press assuming you haven't left that menu, and if you want the App can keep the screen unlocked (dimming the phone display is optional).

More than one person can have the App installed and operate things if you really want.

Menu's are configurable so you can set up the top level to have those commands you use most often. As above, I'm not much of a cannel surfer and if I watch something it's from start to finish so I very very rarely need to go into mess around with sub menu's.

The Smart Hub version that supports the phone does come with a physical remote that has no touch display also. I've never used it to be honest. The form factor is nice but I haven't tested it from a functional level.

Edit: My biggest issue with the Smart Hub is there is an 8 device limitation as opposed to 15 for this Touch Remote (you can buy this also and link it to raise that restriction). Currently I'm at 8 devices so that'll be an issue down the line. Also the iPhone App likes to sync with the Harmony servers more than I'd like which causes a short delay on the first startup.

        • sounds like you have it sorted!

still sounds backwards to me - 3 click process for watching tv. does that include unlocking phone, opening app, waiting for it to connect and then doing that every time you need to change channel or skip an ad? that, or ripping through your phones battery because the screen stays on.

leaving my $1000 iphone on the coffee table for the kids to watch tv doesn't sit well either :D

each to their own of course - maybe im old fashioned and love the idea of having a dedicated remote sitting on the coffee table that serves the single purpose of controlling the entertainment system.

i have a nest thermostat and love controlling that with the iphone, but theres always that dedicated physical control on the wall.

          probably just me :)

        • I am happy with my 515, but it is kind of dying, the backlight kept turning on itself, and adjusting the auto off setting is not working and it is out of warranty….

The cheapest current hamoney does not have the custom buttons anymore, which is need for switching the projectors "hdmi input".

Buy or not? and how many should I buy …

        • @ideasman: Yeah that's assuming the App is open. I don't have an issue with battery drain so it doesn't bother me. I could set the screen to dim if I wanted but that won't suit everyone.

I actually would like to get this remote to go with the hub. If the phones charging in the other room I have to go grab it before using the TV :P

I have a harmony 650 and very happy with it. I will personally avoid a touch screen remote. Having configured my smart phone (with infrared) to work as remote, I feel it is very irritating to look at the screen every time to press a button. A remote has to be with physical buttons for one hand control! Logitech Harmony 650 is the best!

  • That seems like a good price for the remote. But like others have said, touchscreen on a remote is a no go for me. I got the Smart Control (the one that comes with a hub and buttoned remote), seldom use my phone as a remote due to it being too cumbersome.

  • can the remote be use as a bluetooth remote for any windows / osx for VLC etc?

  • I had one of those $300 Logitech 1100i touchscreen remotes and the touchscreen stopped working just over 1 year, making it out of warranty and useless. My 2c, won't buy touchscreen ever again.

  • Just got one - still available till 9am :)
I don't like the placement of transport buttons (eg. play, pause, rew/fwd) but for the price, I decided to give it a shot.
All three of my Harmony 525s that I've had for many, many years (and was very happy with them) have developed issues with either volume or channel buttons. It was time for replacement, and since you can't get Harmony One anymore (at least not for under $100), this will do.

Now have to forget I got this for another 4-5 weeks until it's shipped by COTD ;)
