    Review here:
    http://www.techtimes.com/articles/7416/20140522/hp-7-plus-ta…

Only 5.5 hrs battery life is bit less than most…..

That's not a review, that's vague commentary on HP's tablet line in general.

  • From design to specs, it's nothing better than average Chinese OEM tablets, except it is sold by "HP". AllWinner, no way. Mediatek is barely acceptable.

    • what's wrong with Allwinner? i've had a couple of tablets based on Allwinner cpus and they were ok, not in the same league as Apple/Samsung/Asus etc but these are cheaper for a reason

~170ppi is pretty poor for IPS.

    • +4

What does pixel density have to do with it being IPS?

i'm looking for a tablet ~200 dollars to take on a plane trip next week. I'll just use it to watch tv shows on I guess.

what's best to get, Nexus 7 (first model), galaxy tablet 3 8" ?

this one doesnt appear to have very good features at all

  • Pantech Element is miles in front of everything IMHO
    http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Pantech-Tablet-Element-16GB-Wi-Fi-4G…

Can't tell if joking or being serious.

      • Waterproof, gps, 4G sim slot, 16gb onboard + expansion slot, great viewing angle, hdmi for plugging into tv when travelling for a start.

        Nah, quite serious.

        • How can it be waterproof with HDMI jacks, etc.?

          No audio out jack?

Is AT&T's 4G compatible with any local 4G's?

        • You don't have to settle for a 2.5 year old device to get those features. There are far superior products out there, but being so outdated you can probably pick the Pantech up at a fair price.

Also, 4G is a bit of a moot point considering the 700MHz band won't be available in Australia until January.

Covers on ports. And yes, $2-00 unlock on eBay to make it work here.
As for not having to settle for 2 year old tech, show me anything newer that does all of that for under $200 and I'll buy a dozen.

        • Where did this under $200 requirement come from all of the sudden?

First you say it's miles in front of EVERYTHING and now you're changing the story to how it offers the most features for a device under $200.

          Which is it?

All of a sudden? Try reading 5th post down champ.

          I'm not a mind reader.

I suggest next time you hit the reply link below the actual post you are replying to, rather than using the "Post New Comment" feature down the bottom of the page.

        • Downsides:
          - Refurbished/used
          - Effectively no warranty due to above
          - 2011 CPU/SoC, same as Galaxy SII
          - 1024x768 screen
          - 470g weight (Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is 314g)
          - No big, relatively reliable eBay sellers for it, only small fry (biggest has 325 ratings)

But considering the big battery and other features it's a good price.

        • No backup from the Chinese tab sellers either, big battery is great, lasts for ages.

        • Such anger :-)

His name is Davros - I've never known Davros to joke. In fact, clear out if he starts to say exterminate …

  • how does it compare to this at Centrecom (instore only) for $99:
    Asus Google Memo Pad VIA WM8950 Dual Core(ME172V-1G092A) - 7" LED Backlight WSVGA - 1GB RAM - 16GB SSD - Android 4.1

    • -1

      Dual core = old

      • Often not. There are many high performing smartphones or tablets out there that outperform many lower end quad cores. Samsung Galaxy S4 mini with a 1.7 Mhz. Dual Core Krait / Andreno 305 and Nexus 10 by Samsung with a 1.7 Mhz Cortex A-15 / Mali-T604. The same applies to lower end Intel Atom/Celeron/Pentium and certain AMD Quad Core CPU's build for price/lower power /marketing purposes are mostly outperformed by the Dual/Core ( four threaded ) i3's and i5's etc. Best to double check benchmarks,PassMark scores, and most important your own real world use. Oils ain't oils

    • My guess is that the A31 with the quad may have better performance overall. However it's based on Cortex A7 while the Via runs on the A9 SOC, which has better IPC.

      Benches in Antutu V3

      Asus Memo Pad ME172V
      Mali-400 MP, WM8950, 16 GB iNAND Flash
      4525 Points

      Acer Iconia B1-A71
      SGX531, MT8317T, 8 GB SSD
      6847 Points

      Google Nexus 7
GeForce ULP (Tegra 3), 3, 8 GB SSD
      12703 Points

      Reference tablet
Quad Core A31 (overclocked version @ 1.4 ghz),
      10408 points

So based on the benches above I'd hazard a guess that this HP Slate would be somewhere between the Nexus 7 and Acer Iconia.

      • My HP 7 Plus scored 13127 in Antutu.

  • Very similar spec's to the new model Coles Pendopad, except for IPS display and no HDMI out.

The Allwinner A31s is good value.

    • Speed of 1 GHz seems slow… despite quad core.

    • I don't think the Pendopad had HDMI out either. In fact, I don't think I've seen any A31 based tablets that have HDMI out.

      • +1

The older model pendos were not so good. The new 8GB A31 model definitely has it. The GPU can even decode 4K UHDV .
        (No GPS or bluetooth though.)

        • You are right. Found the instruction manual for it online and HDMI out is listed as a feature. I wonder why they don't mention it in the specifications on their site.

Anyways, hope they go on sale again soon so I can pick one up :)

        • are you kidding? it's better off paying 20 dollars more for the HP plus for IPS screen
Pendo does not have IPS screen

        • Already bought the HP, but I want the Pendopad as well. It's the only A31 I know of that has HDMI out + it runs KitKat which is something none of my other test devices have.

For sure if looking to buy only one of these devices the HP is the obvious choice.

        • coles has it again for 79 tomorrow…….

  • Sold out online just after i got my order in!

  • Seems to be back in stock online. They must have got more stock in the warehouse.

  • I picked up this HP tablet from OW today. Thought i'd also buy a Sandisk Ultra 16GB micro SD card and a Targus tablet stylus while there. I guess OW discounts these tablets hoping people will also buy accessories with it. Still hadn't unboxed it yet.

Going from a crap Amicroe single core 512mb ram 7" tablet to this must be a bit of a leap.
