  • Is this better than the subby that came with my Hyundai i45? I wouldn't want to throw away a perfectly good sub by replacing it with one that's potentially worse (or the same).

    • +1

I would assume your i45 sub is an active sub. hence, if you are gonna get this sub + enclosure, you'll need an amp and appropriate wiring.

  • Sorry guys for the noob question, but can I use this subwoofer to enhance the level/quality of sound I get from my factory installed stereo and speakers? Or do I have to necessarily buy extra things e.g. powerful speakers etc.? I own a Toyota Yaris

    • +2

This sub and enclosure requires an amp to run it. For your factory system, you could keep everything "standard", then find a line-out (or speaker out) to hook up to an amp that has the ability to process speaker out signal. I can go on forever about this…I used to play around with stereos during my doof-doof days and started experimenting with my corolla when I was a uni student…

If you keep your speakers "standard", pump up the treble and mid and lower the bass. Let the amp do the rest with this sub - should give you an "ok" result.

    • I'm currently have a 10" sub in a 2008 LB YRS. For any passive sub to work you'll need to run an amplifier as well. Further, as there is no auxiliary out of the stock head unit, you'll probably need a new head unit. If you change the head unit, the flimsy Yaris speakers will also need changing.

Overall, to enhance the sound quality in a car, you'll need a new head unit (and Yaris specific mount), front speakers, sub amp and sub.
PM me if you want more elaborations, or visit YarisWorld.com - a great, free forum that helped me 'enhance' my yaris!

      • +1

you don't need to change factory units, just use line level converter to add sub and amp, will make a huge difference to your sound system.

    • +4

      I own a Toyota Yaris

They say that fast cars and doof-doof speakers are sought by mean insecure about their sexuality or penis size.
Yaris-drivers therefore must be hung like John Holmes, and do not need stereo upgrades, extractors, or fluffy dice.

disclaimer: I drive a big fast car :-(

      • Yes, I have a huge dong.

    • +1

depending on which vintage your Yaris is, i might suggest you to upgrade the whole she bang…

      • head unit
      • speakers
        -amp - for the subs
      • this sub

then think about sound deadening your car because i can assure you it will rattle like mine and mine is without the subwoofer but i've upgraded to some pioneer speakers front and rear…

  • +2

This is a bargain!!! If I didn't have my 2 x 10" subs from my skyline days still sitting around, I would pounce at this one.

    • +1

this is an absolute bargain!!!! yeah i still have 2x10" and 2x12" from my S15 days too.. lol.. the box alone is worth more than $49.

  • Quick question - what is the JB regular price for this sub? Is it worth waiting until their next 30% off sale?

    • +1

This one is 2013 stock if you wait you may miss out, the new 2014 stock is the 1800W Sub in the enclosure.

JB also had 30% only a few weeks ago.

    • +2

Normal price is around $100.00, see my comment here -
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144301#comment-1988730
Don't wait, it's not going to be cheaper than this.

    • +1

      Thank you @winga26 and@luke73 - just ordered! I won't need 1800W peak power :)

    • their usual price is 89$
this price beats repco's previous sale @59$

  • roughly what's installation cost for this baby?

    • +9

My friend will do it for a pack of smokes.

      • thanks but seriously tho…any idea of cost? :)

        • Around $100 probably.

        • thanks mate!

        • +1

JB charges about $80 to install a DIN head unit (CD Tuner); expect to pay a little over a $100 for installation.

  • What is the cheapest amp that will power this sub? Also need a RCA cable to run the sub from the amp to the boot where it will reside.

    • +9

      Ask your mate the smoker

      • He will recommend a $300 plus amp saying "you need this for decent sound!". I don't trust his advice when it comes to buying equipment(if you want to do it on the cheap, that is)..far too elitist.

  • I thought it was a pricing error and i ordered one just for fun. Oops!

    • No, it's a clearance model. So you really don't need it but bought it for fun?
I'm still unsure whether to buy it because the cost of a decent amp and wiring kit might exceed a few hundred $$$ once completed.

  • Any idea if I can find an enclosure that will fit better for my 2013 outlander? I dont want a square box in my boot… ie. can I get an enclosure that's more like the genuine rockford fosgate one?

  • Any good for a home sub-woofer?

  • Thanks OP, I find loud music in car very distracting but this deal was too good! , look out ozbargainers!
Any advice on wiring kit and Amp?
The wiring kits at JB and Supercheap seems to be about $50, saw the Pyle PLAM40 on Amazon that looks pretty complete for about $32.29USD delivered.

For amp, how about the Pioneer GM-A3602 at JB for $98? Will it have the balls to power this sub?

    • +1

How about this deal for AMP? Not sure if they match though

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/148760

      • Did you read the comments… "150w RMS into a sub isn't exactly going to cause much 'doof' ;)
Handy for some front splits"…insufficient power output for a subwoofer.

    • Nope. You are better off getting a mono amp with at least 400W(RMS) to power this bad boy. That will set you back another $250 - $300 for a decent one + installation. It all depends what setup you want really.

      • yeah i'd come to that conclusion after reading up for a bit. How about the BOSS R1100M mono on amazon? The amp, plus wiring kit comes to just over $100 delivered. I'm not looking for a top shelf solution, just to wake the recently deceased as i drive by.

        • Can anyone comment on the BOSS R1100M mono on amazon? I am also interested in the amp.

    • You can get a wiring kit at Repco for $49 - 5% discount for members. I've been looking around and it's the cheapest kit

  • For $49 this is insane price (RRP $169!!!)
    http://www.sony.com.au/product/box-121lb
Just purchased one for pick up in store.
Have been looking around for an enclosed unit for the back of the van
as I have the monster cables running down to the back just waiting for the DOOF DOOF BOX!!!
Can't wait to crank it up!

    • +3

      Agree, it's a great deal.
Maybe you could + the post to say thanks.

  • Thanks!!

  • Picked it up 2 hours ago and have been playing around with the levels,
    pretty damn good.
The guy at JB said it might even be a mistake it's such a good price that
he was expecting an email from Melb. about it!

  • Tempted to replace my 10" Focal Sub …. but it's awesome…and I really don't need this…really :/

  • Wow. extremely cheap. Cheapest I've ever seen was $69.00 So I bought one, even though I already had one. Great Sub for the price

  • i picked mine up and bought a pioneer gm-5500T 2 channel amplifier from the clearance table for an additional $88. There was no price on the amp box. The dude at JB seemed confident it would move this sub. Might be an option for those in the same boat.

  • Can anyone recommend a suitable amp for this sub? Preferably from JB.

  • Are these any good to use in a home setup if your amp / secondary amp can output 4ohm? I am currently running 2x 12" Kickers (USA made before they went the Asian manufacture) in oversized boxes, getting 4ohm by running them in series, and considering if adding these on the second channel would be any good.

    • just read that Kickers crap all over these, so not for me I guess.

  • +1

Why do they only make these so cheap for cars? Could have a lot of fun indoors with it. Would be a fun project to convert this into a heavy duty boom box-I've seen it done

    • +1

There's nothing to stop you from using it indoors. You just need the appropriate amp.
Your neighbors will hate you though.

      • Amazing. Is this a stupid idea? Would I need a car amp and a power converter, or a home amp? Also would I need all the other speaks to be car speakers?

        • +1

A car amp will work fine, you just need a really beefy power supply. You can use an old PC power supply if you don't mind the dangling wires. You can use a home amp as well, but you'll need a powerful one for oomph. The impedance of the car sub is 4 ohms which is standard.

The other speakers can be any speaker. PC speakers, hifi speakers, anything. Of course they will need their own amp if it isn't built-in already, like PC speakers.

Of course if you're picky over your sound, you'd want things like a crossover if your subwoofer amp doesn't have a low-pass filter, or an EQ perhaps.

I gave my old car sub to a friend who hooked it up to his TV. A week later the building management told him a neighbour complained about the bass so he had to turn it down. :)

        • no, you just need to use a dedicated amp and run in in such a way as to half the ohms from 8 to 4 as per my post above. Works well. You actually connect 2 subs to 1 output channel from the amp as I don't imagine you want subbies in stereo anyway.

The positive from one speaker goes into the negative of the other. You can google for a diagram.

        • The sub is already 4 ohms so no need for 2 subs.
Normal amps can generally handle 4-8 ohms, with some higher-end amps being able to handle 2 ohms.

        • I think you get more 'drive' if you do run them like that, and I was told it's not a great idea to force an amp to output 4 ohms when its really designed for 8. It really does depend on the home amp you are going to use.

        • Thanks everyone.

If I use a PC power supply, how many Watt's would I need and would I need to strip the wires?

With a car battery, could I make this portable? Is this a cheap way to get a beefy sound system?

        • I was told it's not a great idea to force an amp to output 4 ohms when its really designed for 8. It really does depend on the home amp you are going to use.

Yup if the amp doesn't say 4-8 ohms, then better stick to whatever it says.
I've never seen a car amp that can't handle 4 ohms, but home amps can be 6 ohms minimum. A 4 ohm speaker will still work, but it will be inefficient. Running it at high levels for extended periods of time will likely result in the amp's thermal protection cutting in.

If I use a PC power supply, how many Watt's would I need

That depends on what car amp you're using. I would use whatever old PC PSU I have lying around and see how it goes. But if you're buying one, if you're using a smaller amp like this:

          http://www.sony.com.au/product/xm-n502

A power supply like this is fine:
          https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?i…

The amp's specs rates the max power consumption at 15A. The PSU can supply 25A on the 12V line so it'll be fine.

and would I need to strip the wires?

Yup. The yellow and black wires on the 4-pin molex plugs (usually used for dvd drives) are 12V. Just cut them all, twist the colors together (all the yellows are positive, all the blacks are ground) near the plugs and connect them to the amp. Use a short piece of wire to bridge the Remote terminal on the amp with +12V to switch it on.

To turn the PSU on and off, the large connector has one green wire. Cut that and the black wire next to it and hook it up to a switch. When the green wire is grounded, the PSU will switch on. You could also just twist the green and black wires together and turn it on and off at the wall switch.

        • Awesome. Thanks for all that. Ideally it would be for reggae/dubstep/drum&bass. Wouldn't mind building an 'all in one' box. What speakers would you suggest?

        • Oh yes, forgot about the second part of your question. Yup you can hook it up to a car battery and make it portable. But car batteries aren't designed for repeated deep discharges so it'll die quickly. You want a deep cycle battery, often used in marine applications. Jaycar have some deep-cycle SLA/gel batteries too - they don't have wet cells like a car battery so they won't leak if tipped over.

Speakers … that really depends on budget and what sound quality you're after. If you just want to hear sound, you could actually get 6x9 car speakers and put them into a speaker box like this:

          http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Aerpr…

Just keep in mind if you want a system to sound good at high volumes, you're going to have to spend a good amount of money on speakers. You can get low-cost pro audio powered speakers from $269 from Behringer that have the amplifier built in.
And before any audio techs hit reply, yes it's Behringer, but it works!

          https://www.storedj.com.au/products/BEH-B208D

You can connect the link output on the back to the subwoofer amplifier.

        • Thanks again for that. I for something super bassy that you can rumble and feel. Would the Behringer be more powerfull with bass that getting this sub and building my own system?

        • Nah, the sub would give more bass. That Behringer isn't very large. I would definitely add a sub to it for something bassy.

Will it be used indoors or outdoors?

        • Mostly outdoors I'd say.

What speakers would I need to add to this?

        • Outdoors … you're going to need a lot of power for good bass outdoors as there is no room or cabin for the bass to bounce off. A single 10" sub probably isn't going to be very rumbly unless you're reasonably close to it.

Speakers .. those behringers would work well. If you want to cover a large area you'd want to get a larger model.

        • Might look for a second hand Behringer B215D at ~$220 instead. This going to be a better choice for me? It's a 15"

        • Yup that's definitely better than an 8" for an outdoor setting.

        • I've read that the B115's are better for bass - is there much merit to that?

Given the advice here, I"m scrapping the subwoofer project- emailed JB Hifi to cancel my order

        • I haven't listened to them both, but the B115 does have a more powerful amplifier so it most likely has better bass.

          Good luck!

  • oh no…doof doof…

  • +1

Damn would love to add one to my Cruze SRI-V. Has a decent sound system standard, but could use a bit more kick to it.

Only trouble is I would have to keep taking it out to fit in our twin pram on the weekends. Not that the missus would be happy with a sub blasting inches from our 5 month and 19 month old boys.

    • Got two baby seats in the back as well. Put the amp under either front seat, put the sub behind either front seat, their baby legs wont need that space for years. Pram problem solved!

      • You are everything like your username and more

    • My brother had an amp lying around his house:
      http://www.sony.com.au/product/xm-gtx6040

Just wondering if i could use it to power the sub or will i need to be buying something like you suggested?

BTW thanks OP i went ahead and bought one im sick of the standard radio in my old fiesta.

  • +1

    Thx OP I grabbed one

  • +1

Slept on it but decided to bite the bullet and grab one.

    Boom boom.

    Cheers OP.

  • +1

This sounds like a great deal but go easy on the decibels as I damaged my hearing after years of to much doof doof. I now regret ever getting one of these.

    • +1

that much bass shouldn't be used in cars IMO. There is a fool near us who shakes EVERYTHING in the street from 200m when he drives past and I wouldn't like to be him or his ear specialist in a few years/months. Also, with volume that loud you really are cutting off the sounds from the outside world that can warn you of danger etc when driving. I don't understand the need to share your bass with people 200m away. However great loud bass in a home environment in a slightly different thing, as you have a lot more room for the soundwaves to move and escape. There's also a great feeling when the couch vibrates as something explodes on screen, but I'm referring to the bass encoded in a DTS-Master audio track, not some 128k MP3 on a car stereo.

I am curious however how these Sony's compare to these Kickers for example. I think the Kickers are probably a LOT better.

I am actually in the market for a sub in my car; however i am worried that this would be way too overpowering in my small hatch… i was actually about to buy http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2269&form=CAT2… from jay car solely due to the fact that it has a built-in amp. If i now purchase this, and get a cheapy amp $150< that would not take full advantage of the sony's full potential doov doov, will that produce a nicer sound than the no brand jay car one?

  • Jb guy said..pretty much sold out in Sydney :(
    Just wanted one

  • Repco has offered me this one http://www.sony.com.au/product/xm-gtx6041 for $176. He said that would be enough but I'm a bit sceptical. What do you guys think?
