      lol no you are not.:)

same. I bought 1. time to test my genuine samsung aliexpress special chargers haha

Description is so woefully inaccurate it's actually funny. There's no way this could test a battery, but it's a good way to test a charger and see if it's putting out the necessary voltage and current, and to see if a device is really charging properly or if nothing is happening.

If you've ever tried charging a mobile phone, camera or tablet with the wrong charger or cable you'll know it might not charge properly. Unfortunately when you buy a new USB device, most of the time none of the (profanity) chargers have markings indicating which device they came with so unless you were able to mark each one with a label as soon as it came out of the box, it's impossible to know if the 'Samsung' charger you're using came with your S2, S3, S4, or some old ancient thing which only puts out 300mA but doesn't have any writing on it, or if the thing that looks like a Sony mobile phone charger is actually a camera charger or a book reader charger. A device like this could help solve the 'charger roulette' where you have four mobiles phones, four tablets, two book readers, two digital cameras in your family, twelve chargers, but nobody knows which charger came with which device.

Cheapest I can find on eBay is AU$2.75, so not a bad price. Not sure what the quality will be like, but it works it should be a heck of a lot easier than hooking a multimeter up to an old spliced USB extension cable like I usually do.

    Thanks!

    • Great explanation. I ordered one because of you.

    • +3

It can test a battery - if it is one of those USB emergency chargers with inbuilt batteries. I think that is what they mean.

    • +2

US$2.49 (about AU$2.64) at BuyInCoins, cheaper than the Ebay sellers you found:
      http://www.buyincoins.com/item/34684.html

So I agree with you, $1.49 is a good price.

Could use it to test "power bank" USB emergency chargers - perhaps that's what they meant by testing the voltage of the battery? Could also test the capacity with a constant load (maybe a USB fan or other gadget), and seeing how long the power bank lasts before the voltage drops.

Edit - beaten by bchliu, I must learn to type faster.

Good point bchliu and Russ, I hadn't thought about USB battery packs - it would be useful to see if they are putting out the correct voltage and current, and for how long they last.

But keep in mind it still may not be much use for testing if the battery packs are fully charged or not, as most of them put out a pretty steady voltage until they suddenly die on you. It depends on the type of cells and the type of converter used to regulate the battery voltage up or down to 5V. Some regulate to 5V pretty well at a constant voltage until the battery drops below the required threshold for the buck converter, then they drop to 0V. They certainly don't work like old battery packs used to work, where a lower voltage means less charge and a higher voltage means fully charged.

it would be useful to see if they are putting out the correct voltage and current, and for how long they last.

when im charging my powerbanks they often output less than 5V while they are charging themselves, tho the fones dont seem to mind. i also have a powerbank as a backup/UPS on my RPi which i have conected in such a way that it powers the RPi only when the 240v goes off, then automatically goes back to using 240v when it returns and recharging the powerbank, thats why i just ordered another few of these. to double check what powers being used where.

Great little unit. Screen alternates between voltage and current. I often wondered if a regular LCD (non-bright-red-digits) would draw less power from the USB port (for more accurate measurements). I have the exact same model and I like them. Price is cheap.

  • Hrm, after the PayPal process I got an error saying there was nothing in my shopping cart…

Useful device. Just bought this out of pure curiosity as to what all the USB ports in my life are outputting and to figure out why my original GS3 cable charges my GS3 more slowly on an AC powered USB charger than at a USB port on a computer.

    • Thanks.You idea sounds cool!

Mine has proven to be both useful, and accurate. Cost about twice as much as this one, purchased from ebay.

Have since bought a couple of different ones with separate volt and amp displays.

Several different ones to see on dx if you do a search.

Thank you, I have received the item but it does not work. Can you replace or refund, please?

I have plugged it into various USB ports and chargers using various cables and devices. The display does not power on and the devices receive no charge.

  • Got mine today. Worked fine, the values line up with an app I use on my phone to measure current.
Should have got a couple more for when it eventually dies.

    • Thanks for your feedback.:)
